sure. right. they make exile on main street look like a britney spears album

What? No "Cooleyhighharmony?" No "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em"? No "Rhythm Nation"? FAIL.

/why yes, I did grow up in the early 90's, why do you ask?
//and yeah, I'm very kidding

That's a perfectly cromulent choice. Not my choice, but it's respectable.

Considering it's coming from MTV, it's wildly surprising, actually.

Maybe they mixed up the "best album of all times" ballots with the "best video of all time" ballots?

It's not my favorite, but it's a sensible choice really.

Thriller isn't a bad choice...

1. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
2. Baby Be Mine
3. The Girl Is Mine
4. Thriller
5. Beat It (Single Version)
6. Billie Jean (Single Version)
7. Human Nature
8. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)
9. The Lady In My Life

I'd venture to say most of us know 7 of these songs by heart (Human Nature and The Lady in My Life excluded).

The album was a monster... sold better than any other album in history at the time. Just because MJ is a freak now doesn't discredit his amazing early work.

/I'd vote for Saturday Night Fever, Dark Side of the Moon, Appetite, Abbey Road, Blonde on Blonde, and many, many others before Thriller, but hey, it is a good album.

Exile would be my choice, but then again, overproduced pop music (in reference to Michael Jackson) doesn't really "click" with me.

It is a settled question among pretentious music critics that Exile on Main Street is the best rock album of all time. Let us have no further discussion.

Who's Next is the best album ever

"Baba O'Riley" - 5:11
"Bargain" - 5:33
"Love Ain't for Keeping" - 2:12
"My Wife" - 3:41
"The Song Is Over" - 6:16
"Getting In Tune" - 4:50
"Going Mobile" - 3:42
"Behind Blue Eyes" - 3:42
"Won't Get Fooled Again" - 8:32

Starts awesome - ends awesome.

Half those Thriller songs might have been good then, but does anyone really want to listen to PYT or The Girl is Mine anymore?

Hender [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 10:59:32 AM
EatHam: I'm not a Michael Jackson fan, but Thriller is way better of an album than the White Album, Appetite for Destruction, or OK Computer.

I was in the single digit age group when "Thriller" came out, so I only had exposure to the video. I finally picked up the album on Halloween when iTunes was selling it for $5 WITH the video. Sweet deal. Great album, but I'm not sure I'd rank it as best of all time. I like "OK Computer" better.

I wouldn't necessarily unquestioningly say these are the best of all time, but my all-time favorites in no particular order are probably:

1) "Vegas" by The Crystal Method
2) "Black Holes and Revelations" by Muse
3) "Consolers of the Lonely" by The Raconteurs
4) "The Joshua Tree" by U2
5) "Violator" by Depeche Mode
6) "Pretty Hate Machine" by Nine Inch Nails
7) "13 Tales From Urban Bohemia" and "Welcome to the Monkey House" by The Dandy Warhols

Veags by Crystal Method? Interesting choice. I really like that album too. It takes me back to days when I did a lot of drugs.

My all-timers would be:

1) Aenima by Tool
2) Astro Creep 2000 by White Zombie
3) Blues for a Red Sun by Kyuss
4) Superunknown by Soundgarden
5) Alice in Chains by Alice in Chains
6) Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age
7) Evil Empire by Rage Against the Machine

Why yes, I am a fan of 90s music.

I'm not going to trip like you do.

They released a remastered 10th anniversary version not long ago that has the original album as well as a second CD with remixes of the tracks by other artists. It's good. I've listened to "Vegas" enough times that I could tell they slightly tweaked the album, too.

They have a new album coming out next month. The first single sounds good so far. I read somewhere that it's being called their "breakthrough album," and my first thought was "Breakthrough? Everyone and their mother has heard Crystal Method in the last ten years whether they realize it or not given how often their music is used in ads, TV shows, sporting events, blah blah blah."

Given Michael Jackson's reported propensity for kiddie-diddling, the song list is quite amusing.

Velvet Underground & Nico:

Side A

1. "Sunday Morning" (Reed, Cale) - 2:54
2. "I'm Waiting for the Man" - 4:39
3. "Femme Fatale" - 2:38
4. "Venus in Furs" - 5:12
5. "Run Run Run" - 4:22
6. "All Tomorrow's Parties" - 6:00

[edit] Side B

7. "Heroin" - 7:12
8. "There She Goes Again" - 2:41
9. "I'll Be Your Mirror" - 2:14
10. "The Black Angel's Death Song" (Reed, Cale) - 3:11
11. "European Son" (Reed, Cale, Morrison, Tucker) - 7:46

When people say Led Zeppelin is a rip off of your band, your band's gotta be pretty good.

/Some people say "Heroin" is the greatest love song ever written; and it ain't about no girl

I swear Michael Jackson has some sort of control over MTV and Viacom. When MJ was in the deepest of his troubles and no one would touch him or his music, MTV would still show MJ tribute shows and specials ad nauseum.

And, in terms of its overall influence on popular music, this is the best album of all time:

Not at all, it had some o the most ground breaking videos of it's day and is still a worldwide top seller.

The Beatles on the other hand... no flashy videos, aside from some campy movies.
So it'll be a cold day in hell when MTV gives them the crown.

I'm glad that it influenced people, and I fully recognize the importance and talent of The Clash, but I find that album mostly poor with a couple of good songs.

Nice pull on the Richard James!

Coil were certainly involved in a lot of different genres, but I don't know that you could say that they were directly involved in the birth of those new genres. (just my opinion obviously)

Davis is directly responsible (at least in part) for hard bop, cool jazz, jazz fusion, and modal jazz. The man was a monster!

In general I can't stand MJ & haven't been able to since well before his becoming a child molesting space alien. That said I own Thriller & enjoy listening to the album on occasion.

I could argue MTV's choice, but all in all I'm ok with it.

HAMMERTOE [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 12:06:34 PM
Actually, Thriller set the stage for many acts to follow. Don't forget that the video to the title track won the very first Academy Award ever given to a music video. Add to that fact the collaboration with some of the biggest names in music at the time and drawing on their incredible strengths in just the right way. The first time I heard Beat It, I was blown away. I just knew it had to be Eddie on the guitar. Admitted, Michael was already starting to display his classic eccentric side with the single glove, etc., but he gave pop music the gravitas to dominate and highly affect the rock music scene throughout the 80's and well into the 90's.

I can totally agree with that. For all Michael Jackson's failings, and crazy/weird child-pedo shiat, Thriller was a brilliant, classic album.

It wouldn't have been what I would pick, but a great album nonetheless.

/Oasis - What's the Story (Morning Glory), maybe?
//The Beatles - Revolver, maybe?
