Rush - yes
Boston - definitely
Benatar - maybe
Kiss - maybe after most of them are dead
Def Leppard - makes me laugh
Genesis - no freaking way
Doobies - article is pretty much right..so no
Moody Blues - why are they not in?
Chicago - go ahead just for quantity

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 12:44:30 AM
I agree with all except the Doobie Brothers, and very much agree with Benatar, Boston and Rush.

Lorelle [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 01:56:29 AM
This year's inductees include Run-DMC. Everyone on the article's list is a helluva lot better (even Def Leppard).

The Cars, Styx, and ELO should also be on this list.

Sgygus [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 04:04:06 AM
My rant every year: where is Stevie Ray Vaughan?

DjangoStonereaver [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 05:53:58 AM
Pat Benatar, Rush and maybe The Moody Blues deserve to
be inducted (heck, I agree with the article, which strongly
implies that Benatar should be given Madonna's place).

The rest of them are not worthy, not even the Peter Gabriel-era
Genesis, and especially Boston.

I, unlike the author of this article, try very hard every day to forget the music of the late 70's and 80's.

The List (pops)

ABBA!

Seriously, I browsed the list and there are a lot of talented R&B and Gospel artists in there. I thought this was the Rock hall of fame. As Rush said, "a joke".

You talk too much. It's tricky to come up with the right bands to select for the hall. Of course not everyone if going to agree that the choices are perfection, but I am sure it's tougher than leather to make a final decision. No one band is the real king of rock, and you don't have to come on fark, and start raising hell like this.

Inescapable Future of Humanity: KISS? Really?

Cheesy as they were, they were also talented musicians, decent writers, great performers, and revolutionary marketers. And I'm not even really a fan, but some of their stuff is pretty good. Their overall impact? Definitely worth putting them in the R&RHoF.

Maybe they're being held out on out of spite because they refuse to retire gracefully and keep putting on just one more "Farewell", "This is Really It This Time", "We're Doubling Ticket Prices Because We're Never Touring Again", "Well Maybe Just Once Dore, Daddy Needs a New Hip Joint" tour.

Boston and Chicago suck. Keep 'em out. Doobie Brothers, what the hell did they even do that was memorable?

Everyone else, sure, let 'em in.

I seem to recall reading somewhere (on the internet! So it must be true!) that one of the bigwigs involved with the hall of fame has stated that as long as he's alive and has anything to do with the selection process, that Kiss isn't getting in. Unfortunately, I can't remember who exactly, and the googles do nothing for me this morning.

Alice Cooper should be in before Kiss. Did the reporter run out of bands he could remember? Cheap Trick, seriously?

What about Tull?

Boston really? I wasnt around so maybe I dont know but I was always under the impression that they had one great debut album and then fell short with everything else. They say you have your whole life to write a good first album but what is really hard is to follow it up with a solid second and a great third.

Gunny Highway 2009-04-09 08:15:54 AM
How about Los Lobos? They have been putting out solid jams for a loong time now.

Yeah, because Def Leppard is more influential than Run-DMC.

Go suck a tailpipe.

frostus [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 08:28:46 AM
Kiss might have been a greater gimmick than a band.

Exactly why they don't belong. I agree completely with thesharkman that Alice Cooper belongs before Kiss is even considered. Jethro Tull as well. From the list in the article the only band I see that belongs is Rush (and maybe Chicago for their early output with Terry Kath).

Man, that's just shameful. If they are going to induct COUNTRY artists into the ROCK Hall, then every one of the acts on the list in the article most certainly deserves to be in there (even the couple that I don't really care for).

A joke, indeed!

/facepalm

I think they suck but someone is buying all these albums. There is something to be said for mass appeal over an extended period of time, I dont know what it is, but there is something.

Gunny Highway: Boston really? I wasnt around so maybe I dont know but I was always under the impression that they had one great debut album and then fell short with everything else.

The deal with Boston is that they arrived on the scene when laid-back California rock ruled the airwaves. Other than early Springsteen, everything was pretty soft-core. I looked over one of my radio playlists from '75 the other day. Firefall? Loggins and Messina? Matthew Sweet?

Having loud ROCK back on the radio was actually refreshing. That being said, Boston is one of my "button bands" - I hit the "off" button as soon as they come on the car radio.

As for the others:

Rush - yes, because they have the most obnoxious fans in rock, and this might make them finally STFU

Benatar - I didn't realize what a hit she was until I lived in Detroit for a while in the late '70s. She was idolized in the upper Midwest, that's for sure. Perhaps she did set the stage for Chrissie Hynde and Madonna.

Kiss - never liked 'em, but have to give them their props. If their problem is one director on the museum's board, I'm sure he can be dealt with in the usual rock manner: payoff or "suicide"

Def Leppard - never got them, have no real opinion as to their influence or popularity.

Genesis - their soi disant prog seems pale compared to Procol Harum, King Crimson or Yes. The only thing I've ever admired about Peter Gabriel is that he got to sleep with Rosanna Arquette.

Doobies - the early version of the band was just adequate enough to play high school proms. After the addition of Michael McDonald and Skunk Baxter (and with some help from Steely Dan and Little Feat) they pretty much defined classic pop of the late '70s.

Moody Blues - better musicians and songwriters than they are given credit for, but some of that is their doing with all the hippie trappings. The music (other than Tuesday Afternoon) stands up surprisingly well.

Chicago - the Terry Kath band had R&B and jazz chops to rival Tower of Power. The Peter Cetera band was bland white soul. Can we induct just the members of the CTA era?

Yes, the 24 consecutive platinum albums they've released indicate total incompetence.

Yeah, the ol' "sales = artistic merit" conundrum. Every time I see this I remember that the top-selling song (via Billboard) for 1969, the year of the hippie, the era of the Yippie, of Vietnam protests, of Nixon's reign, when the world was going to CHANGE and have HOPE due to Woodstock . . .

Anyway, the top song was "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies.

Gunny Highway 2009-04-09 09:17:39 AM
OldManDownDRoad: "sales = artistic merit"

You missed the point. She was citing Rush's album sales as a reason they should be in so I was pointing out that Kiss has also sold alot of albums.

But I do think there is something to be said for selling alot of albums over a long period of time. You may not be good but you have a large devoted fan base. It may not get you in the HoF but I think that is pretty cool for a musician regardless of how I feel about their music.

mightybaldking 2009-04-09 09:22:21 AM
Genesis: Provided that the make it very clear that they are only inducting the Genesis up to and including Duke, and very clearly excluding the Abacab and later Genesis.

Kiss: Well, ok. I don't like them, but I suppose they belong for all the wrong reasons.

Rush: I'm not sure on this one. Rush (like Queen) is sort of a musical dead end in that they took their style to a logical conclusion, and finished it off. It's not like they opened a new path and spawned a whole new batch of imitators. Perhaps they should be in there based purely on musicianship. But, if musicianship is our sole criterion, then we'd have to admit Dream Theater.

Boston, Def Leppard: Hell no.

Doobies: Yeah, particularly for their early work.

Chicago: Certainly prolific. Maybe.

Benetar: Hell yes. She was groundbreaking.

Moody Blues: Definately.

Rush - Yes. Not a big fan myself but they've earned it

Boston - Maybe. They were mostly one-album wonders, sets a bad precedent

Benatar - Fair enough

Kiss - Maybe once Gene Simmons dies and the RRHOF is sure they can't just use the induction to cash in instead of actually play

Def Leppard - Tough one - they kinda defined a decade of stadium poprock, fair enough

Genesis - I like the stuff, but I can't really see it

Doobies - Article itself doesn't even make a good case

Moody Blues - Dunno if they've had that much of an impact

Chicago - it'd be one hell of an induction concert, sure thing

Yeah, I see what you mean. If it doesn't sell, it's not exactly "pop"ular music. It's jazz.

That's the reason I'd give the nod to Kiss. Their fans are pretty devoted and always seem to be having a farking good time. Which is what rock is all about - well, that and throwing out random insults and opinions on the Fark music tab.

That would include Peter Cetera.

Say what you will about Chicago's later albums (oh, after about VIII), but early on, Cetera's voice was a perfect foil for those of Kath and Lamm. And his bass playing was awesome.
