It's pretty sad that was have such crazy fanatics in this country that they have to say this. It's like if NASA had to make a public statement that "Despite what you may have heard, the moon landing was not a hoax filmed in a soundstage. It really happened."

RoxtarRyan [TotalFark] 2009-04-08 05:30:08 PM

Gotta keep the oil moving...

He was probably just greasing the wheels for when oil explodes in price again this summer.

It's kind of silly that people are bickering over gestures rather than, oh, I don't know- "policy", but what the hell. I mean yes, it's soooo interesting that our president might have lowered the top half of his torso slightly by bending his body at the waist and OMG SCANDAL, but that whole thing about Bandar Bush smoking cigars in the oval office while Bush senior was working for a firm representing Saudi interests, that? That's nothing.

P.S.,. F*ck Saudi Arabia

Why does the man on the left in the first picture have a gold colored tie on, and in the next shot it's green and he's wearing glasses?

Actually, that's a really good question.

Um, looks like he bowed and, frankly, I'm okay with that so long as Obama was following protocol. Not like he got down on one knee and kissed the guy's ring.

Hender: Actually, that's a really good question.

The second set of images are from television stills which can have a slightly different color range, not to mention mosaic problems in tightly patterned textures such as ties. As for the glasses, the dude might have put on some glasses.

There were 2 men. The one in the gold tie is hidden by the fat Saudi. Go watch the video, you'll see them both. Also Obama uses ONE HAND, not two as the White House claims. You can even see his left hand hanging down in the 2nd pic.

I don't think it's the same guy. And the pics check out legit (pixels, etc.)

If you watch the actual video, you can see both of them. It's two separate people, but they're just standing in positions where the camera angles make it look like it's the same place.

As for the bowing issue, I really don't care. I raised an eyebrow when Bush walked around holding the King's hand and kissed him on the mouth, but whatever, it's cultural. I think it shows respect, not "deference" as the Washington Times said.

I think they're making a bigger deal of it, than what it really is. No need for Obamas people to start lieing about it. To me that's worse.

Rookie mistake, maybe, but I don't know about dumb. If I were introduced to Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Britain and the United Kingdom, my first instinct would be to bow as well. Why? 'Cause that's what I've seen people do in movies and whatnot. I have no idea if it's cultural appropriate for me to bow to foreign royalty as I'm not their subject, but it would sure as hell be respectful and not deferential.

Hmmm, it does appear to be. The angle of the original makes it tough to tell that their heads are side by side, and someone just pushed their heads a bit closer together.

OK, so forget that, but the hand-holding?

Doesn't matter if you think it was deferential or not, it's the Saudi's opinion that counts. And Saudis being Saudis...

Well according to the linked article, the Saudi paper liked it and thought is was respectful. If they think it was deferential, though, they're probably in for a surprise.

Not the poster, but nothing, but it's a funny picture. Bush trying to open the locked door was funny too, but just as irrelevant.

Not that I care either way, but I figured it was a step-in "go in low" kind of hand shake that jock types greet each other with. Note that he's walking toward while lowering, not stopping, standing, then bowing. It may sound subtle, but it isn't if you know people that do that.

Of course, subtly is what this type of photo-op is all about, so he could have been more serious and protocol conscience. Or he could have just been himself, which doesn't bother me.

I'm not going to try and convince anyone though. If you think this is a clear sign of the end of our sovereignty then I won't disturb your bubble.

I'm outraged. In this country we kiss the King on the lips, then stroll hand-in-hand through a flower garden.

(Seriously, GOP, this is the kind of stupid shiat that lead to record disapproval for your party. Grow the fark up).

Miss Manners says Americans do not bow to foreign monarchs because that act signifies the monarch's power over his subjects. And if Miss Manners doesn't set protocol, I don't know who does.

Anyway, not sure why the White House is denying it, unless they have audio of him exclaiming "Hey! Look! A quarter!"

Whatever.

They'd have a lot more to talk about if they called it for what it was. The "step-in lowering jock" maneuver is confident and aggressive. Straight bowing is submissive. This was a nerdy awkward mix of the two that should have amused his greeter and made the right gleeful in its thoughtless and clumsy execution. They're playing this all wrong.
