FTA: "The wildman is considered one of the most innovative drummers ever"

Not by drummers, he isn't.

Did they even ASK any of us? Because I've never once seen "Tommy Lee" bubble up on any of the cyber-webz pissing matches where we all get together to argue about who's better than whom, and precisely why.

The only thing all drummers agree on is that Buddy is the best that ever was, ever will be, forever and ever, we hold this truth to be so self-evident as to be settled, amen. Anyone who asserts otherwise simply cannot be taken seriously because they're obviously a 12-year-old who's not experienced enough to have an opinion.

But as for the hundreds in perpetual competition for the silver slot, there are as many opinions as there are drummers. Even so...Nobody who expects to be taken seriously would champion the cause of THAT dick-wrinkle.

Wrongful? There'd be nothing wrong with Tommy Lee or his fans dying.

His talent (meter, tastefulness, creativity, etc.) is amazing for someone in that genre of music, and without him Motley Crue would never have been heard of. I tend to equate him with Ringo, from the standpoint that each was rock solid behind the rest of their groups while not feeling they needed to show off their abilities. I've seen/heard him on the spinning drumkit live a couple of times, and I was stunned by his ability and showmanship each time.

Being in the live sound biz, I've seen quite a few drummers and musicians (^_^) and become quite jaded over time. However, his performances were among the standouts.

You make a compelling case. But...isn't being "one of the better metal drummers" sort of like being valedictorian of the "special" school?

who cares if he isn't the best drummer, he's going to have a kick ass (hopefully) rollercoast(er)

//they should have a rock themed theme park

Would Dr. Feelgood be Dr. Feelgood without Tommy Lee pounding the hell out of the drums? No. His chops may not be the best around, but he does what he does well.

I work with a couple guys who call me "Tommy Lee" as a joke. They know nothing about rock music other than they like to listen to it, but they do know that Tommy is kind of a lame drummer who happens to have a penchant for excellent theatrics and is lucky enough to be in a popular band.

/I'm more of a Moon/Bonham/Mitchell/Peart/Cobham/Bruford kind of guy

I love Tommy Lee's playing because he's solid as hell. The guy is a human metronome in my opinion. I'm not saying he's the best or the worst, but the farker's in the pocket better than most.

I Agree that he isn't the best drummer. You have to admit, it would take a certain skill set to keep rhythm while being flipped and spun. The article refers to him as one of the most innovative (not best) drummers. I didn't read that as anyone saying he is great.

/sat across the isle from him on a flight this fall
//seemed like a pretty good guy

Oh, come on. I haven't played drums in 20 years and I could play Dr. Feelgood. He really isn't that good.

Yeah, I can't stear a boat with my penis either. He's got me on that.

It's not about writing difficult rhythms, it's about using appropriate rhythms for the music, then having the ability to lock in the meter. You might be able to play along with the recording, but I'll bet you couldn't rhythmically keep those guys together on stage.

Oh no you didn't.

But seriously, there are plenty of very talented drummers in metal. And Tommy Lee isn't one of them.

I see him as a very good hard rock drummer. Capable of pounding a very powerful groove. I bet he'd be a blast to jam with.
