I hate nickelback's music, but they apparently put on a disgustingly entertaining show.

They know how to keep their fans interested and make it worth their 70 bucks to see then at the big venues.

Is it just that hipsters can't stand for anyone to actually make it big?

They'll be here sometime in August. I guess I'll get a chance to see. I think their music is... (after having my ass handed to me in a previous thread, I'm trying to be careful) is decent enough. I guess I'll see. Most importantly, my wife wants to see them and she controls the... I've said too much.

To each his own, but I prefer a band that can do more than one fast song and more than one slow song.

I kept chuckling through the article, how it was trying to find the positives of appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Sometimes I want to hear complex & challenging live music, like Wynton Marsalis & the LCJ Orchestra; sometimes I like simple, sweet tunes (Willie Nelson); other times I like lowest common denominator rawk (Nickelback), and sometimes I even enjoy blatantly unoriginal Joy Division rip-offs (Killers).

In the last month here, each of the above acts have been ripped up in threads, indicating that most people here have "black 'n white" taste in music.

Two days of Amanda Palmer threads, I guess we gotta have some balance.

Does the Music tab need their own PITA meter?

It's because they make stupid songs that often sound exactly the same as their previous songs, their lead singer is a dick, their lyrics are insanely cheesy but still get taken seriously, and their fans often think they are on par with icons of the past.

And for the record, I despise hipsters and their "indie cred" just as much.

In other words, they're just like Black Crows, AC/DC, Bruce Springstink, and everybody that raps.

this and the fact that they're insanely popular despite the fact that there's thousands of bar bands performing/writing the exact same music. If you just want to Rawk Out! there's plenty of bands that are much better.

Kali-Yuga 2009-04-08 03:55:52 PM
One of my favorite, and incredibly accurate Nickelback reviews.

"Chad Kroeger now says - after confessing the only reason he's making music is to delay working in a lumber yard for as long as possible like all the also-ran bands they also ran with - "I think we're just trying to keep our fans happy. We're on auto-pilot."

In other words, they're saying "up yours" to trying to express and push themselves. Their plan is to just keep making the same shiat till it stops selling, burrowing into the industry like the pestilent tics they are."

This: Link (new window)is what would happen at every Nickelback performance if the unwashed masses had any sort of musical taste whatsoever.

7Mary3and4 2009-04-08 03:56:22 PM
Remember, if a band is popular, you're not allowed to like them.

That way, you can claim you only like little-known, unpopular bands, until they hit it big, too. Then you have to claim you don't like them either.

FeedTheCollapse: If you just want to Rawk Out! there's plenty of bands that are much better.

"Rawk Out!" if I'm reading Bob's post up above correctly, is best done with awesome light and pyro displays. There are plenty of bands that sound like Nickelback, but only Nickelback has the huge display to go with it. Plus, all those others are copying Nickelback... ewwwwww!

I'm not defending Nickleback.

I'm complaining about all the elitist bastards on the internet who insist than any popular band or singer is de facto not worth listening to.

But they're happy to tell you all about the unsigned bands they think are better.

Should one of those groups gets signed, however, they immediately join the list of sell-outs and become band non grata.

seriously, I have yet to hear of any band to who this meme would apply to. It smacks of someone defending their horrible taste in music by snickering about people who are able to find their own taste in music.

I would never claim "popular does not equal good", but that does appear to be the case with the current state of popular music.

Of course, you haven't, because as soon as an example is presented, you'd claim that band wasn't good to begin with.

But I will tell you that I lived in Columbia,South Carolina in the 90s, and Hootie and the Blowfish was very popular, playing local venues, until the band got a record contract. Suddenly, it became very popular to talk about how good "they used to be" or how they'd sold out.

GoodyearPimp 2009-04-08 04:15:51 PM
When Kroeger sang, "This is where I went to school," they showed a school on the big screen. When he offered the most universal memory he could possibly sing about, "We used to listen to the radio," they showed a radio.

This is a positive? I'm calling shenanigans on the article.

Does it really cost that much to see them live? For me at least, that price range is set aside for bands that I need to see before I die. Nickelback will never fall into that category

Nickleback may suck, but they're still cooler than you. I'm sure Chad Kroeger crys himself to sleep at night on his big pile of money next to his super hot groupies because a bunch of hipper-than-though farkers can't stand him.

7Mary3and4: Clever. You wouldn't make the claim, but you just did.

Read again: "current state". There's been plenty of good popular music and there has always been shiatty popular music. I'm hard pressed to think of any bands that are both popular and good right now that have come in the past decade. The closest I can think of is The White Stripes, and they're okay. (Before you go all "LoL, I bet you liked Destijl!", I'm not really that familiar with their work.)

Stop being obtuse and cite me a relevant example. Hootie and Blowfish were hardly indie darlings, local scene or not.

Kali-Yuga 2009-04-08 04:33:56 PM
FeedTheCollapse: I would never claim "popular does not equal good"

I would, and will make that claim.

"In this experiment, he set up a site featuring downloadable music from unsigned or otherwise obscure acts. 16,000 participants signed up and downloaded all the songs. He divided them into several groups. The control group was asked to rate the songs with no input from the other members. Seven other groups were also asked to rate the songs, but were allowed to see how other members of their group voted....

Two findings emerged. First, the variation in popularity in the control group was much smaller than in the other groups. In the groups where they could see their peers' opinions, people voted for the same acts that other people voted for, suggesting that popularity breeds more popularity

The more interesting finding was the complete randomness of the songs that became popular in each group. There was almost no connection between "objective quality" (as measured by the control group) and popularity"

Before I had even discovered Fark and before I knew that the "in" thing was to dislike nickelback, I hated nickelback with a fiery passion.

I don't know what it was about them, whether it horrid singing, the repetitive chords, or just the fact that everything about Chad Kroeger screams "douchebag"; I just hated that band. Not in the same way of how much I hate hitler, just more often.

/it is also annoying when I hear 4 different radio stations playing Nickelback at the same time.
