Trade that "o" for an "s" at the end and I'd agree.

Can you imagine if someone had told you back in 1992 or so that Dave Grohl was actually the most talented musician in the entire band?

I moved away from Seattle three years ago and I have to say not hearing a Nirvana song on the farking radio every five minutes really helped me regain my appreciation of the band.

I wouldn't go that far, but he is without a doubt the only good thing that came out of Nirvana.

Yeah, but Soundgarden crapped better albums. As did PJ and Alice in Chains.

I listened to the first Foo Fighters album a few months ago (for the first time in 10+ years) and that thing has aged terribly. It sounds about as talented as Silverchair.

Isnt that how it always goes? We did this same thing over the weekend already. Some metal or hardcore fan will cite that there was a better music scene going on and that Nirvana was of not importance. Opinions are just that. Such is life I suppose.

Apparently nobody ever listened to Bleach.

Owned it. Along with a bunch of other Nirvana stuff. The novelty wore off quickly & all of it ended up in a used CD store in the Midwest.

It's difficult to describe to youngsters how huge Nevermind was. I never listen to it anymore, though, and I'm not sure if that's because it was so overplayed or if it really just hasn't aged well.

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2009-04-08 11:51:57 AM
I love how people still drop grunge references for Seattle. It was 15 years ago. "Hey, I'm going to move to Seattle." "Are you going to wear all flannel and rock out to grunge?"

No kidding. I distinctly remember a typical day of listening to Vanilla Ice, Def Leppard, MC Hammer, Motley Crue, and Top-40 radio. Later that afternoon, I went to a friend's house and he had just bought Nevermind. I distinctly remember thinking "All of my music at home is crap."

As soon as I develop Terminators and a time machine, I'm going to send one back in time to kill the mother of whoever developed MTV Unplugged.

a) The entire band? You mean he was more talented than the other two guys in the band, one of whom was Krist Novoselic? Ashley Parker Angel was the most talented person in O-Town. What's your point?

b) David Grohl is good drummer/back-up singer, and decent guitarist, but his songwriting and lead vocals are weak.

I thought Pearl Jam, LL Cool J, and Stone Temple Pilots were all awesome.

Most of the rest, meh. Especially 10,000 Maniacs. If I have to hear any more of that, I'm gonna get really aggressive with a couple of Q-tips.

The concept was cool, but none of the bands I wanted to hear were ever booked.

Uh, considering Nirvana was arguably the most popular and greatest band of the 90's generation and everyone revered Cobain, I think it is saying something that he may not have been the most talented member after all.

NorCalLos: b) David Grohl is good drummer/back-up singer, and decent guitarist, but his songwriting and lead vocals are weak.

I strongly disagree.

Mztlplx: Grohl was the talented one.

Musically, yes. Kurt was the better writer. I have been saying this for years. Had Kurt been a writer or a poet, his fame would probably have been far more lauded, and far more hated by those who already despise him. He had a good way of reading himself, and those and the world around him and with a unique perspective. I wish the man had written a novel before he died :(

Really? Alice in Chains unplugged is excellent. I'm a big fan of the acoustic sound though. Scour the internets looking for unplugged versions of songs whenever I can.

I liked AiC unplugged better than Nirvana, but I also like root canals better than kidney stones.

I did enjoy LL mostly because it came out so much better than I expected. But that doesn't mean it was really good.

I picked up Bleach because it had a song Floyd the Barber.

I enjoyed Nevermind because it sounded like a pissed off Cheap Trick record.

In Utero was a popular band desperately trying to be edgy.

Nirvana was OK. They have always been ungodly overrated just because the main guy was a moran, and he provided lots of good copy for the media.

If Cobain were alive, Nirvana, if they were still together, would be playing here and there. Most people would be feh. Think Pearl Jam.

If Vedder had offed himself in '95, Pearl Jam would be the icons.

I don't think that the bands you quoted are worse or better than Nirvana, everyone has inspiration, and these bands were Kurts. I'm pretty sure that those bands also have influences that come out in their work from bands they idolized.

Gunny Highway 2009-04-08 12:54:10 PM

It is true. It is also true that Nirvana was a very important band for their time and place in rock. Because they experienced more of a cultural impact and commercial success is no reason to dislike them or downplay their importance.

In my dimension they made a bunch of FM radio-sounding records that failed to get much people excited, except for their long-time fans
