This is a truly interesting article. Apartheid ended, and South Africa's political climate got much worse. At least apartheid kept South Africa in the first world. Free elections seem to be dragging South Africa down to the level of the rest of Africa.

Do you have, perhaps, a non-insulting and rational response to this?

He has hinted he might restore the death penalty. He is keen on traditional medicine men. He thinks teenage unwed mothers should have their babies taken away; that school prayers should be compulsory and that there is too much sex on TV.

Now that I've read Peter Hitchens' predictably unctuous blather, I might do some research on this Zuma guy and find out what he's really like. You know, just to cleanse my intellectual palate, as it were.

I am black. I am from South Africa. Zuma is a farkwit.

Hitchen's article has problems - he takes cheap and unnecessary shots at the BBC (who've been following the ANC's myriad failures for a long time), and he's wrong about the elections being rigged, but he's perfectly correct to pour scorn on Zuma. The man to took a shower to protect himself from HIV, and he was the head of the government's HIV/Aids campaign.

It's terrible, it really is.

There is textbook I had in college that would argue that this has less to do with Africa, than with the general condition of a Democracy--Specifically in that it requires the active nurturing of elites who are vested in its continuance to flourish.

Without that 'enlightened self interest' the Democracy will wither and fade.

Interesting reading, if nothing else.

ManicParroT: I am black. I am from South Africa. Zuma is a farkwit.

Unlike Hitchens, who never knows what he's talking about, you appear to know what you're talking about. I am inclined to respect your opinion.

However, I will note that subby's invocation of Mugabe is a little ironic, considering that one of the points of contention between Mbeki and Zuma has been Zuma's contention that Mbeki was too easy on Mugabe.

Eh the dude dressed up like a Zulu warrior for a photo op. To me this isn't much different from our politicians dressing up and posing in tanks or with footballs.

\disturbed by all the ?cat tails? on the costume though

Hmm... I'm torn. At the same time, I can't trust anything the Daily Wail writes. But then again, you say you're from South Africa. Funny how a (seemingly) random guy on the internet has more credibility than Daily Mail... ;)

Anyway, I kind of wanted to visit South Africa. Haven't had the time or money yet, so my travels have been light. But hopefully I get to see it in my lifetime.
