RRRRR!

Seriously, though, this is great. Neutral Milk Hotel's ITAOTS is a phenomenal album.

I used to see her when she was the eight foot bride in Cambridge.
She'd stand motionless on a milk crate with wearing an old white wedding dress with her skin painted white holding daisies. Put some change or a buck in a basket and she'd give you a daisy. It was pretentious, sure, but I got a few daisies. Her production co is "Eight Foot Bride Productions".

Agreed. It's unfortunate that Amanda and Brian have split.

But for all you DD fans, WORLD INFERNO SOCIETY, one of Brian's projects, is currently touring! I know they are in Detroit thursday, Chicago this friday, and Cleveland area on Monday. More dates on the DD myspace page. Check them out

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is one of the top five albums of the 1990s, and among the best albums of the last few decades. An underheard masterpiece by a mad genius on the verge of a mental breakdown from which he still hasn't recovered. Absolutely superb and as painful, vital and powerful now as it was when it was released 11 long years ago.

I'm really snarky about the Dresden Dolls but this seems interesting and I hope that the people who go see it enjoy it.

/can't resist - Dresden Dolls have ALREADY got TWICE as much attention than they deserve.
//no really, have fun

So, you think Mangum's going to play the Merge XX festival this summer? Pitchfork keeps dropping hints about a NMH reunion whenever they mention it.

I hope Mangum's involved with the project. In some hack's pudgy hands and brain, some craptastic brain salad surgery could be made out of it.

The only project Jeff Mangum is involved in right now is the Jeff Mangum's Complete Disappearance From The Face Of The Earth Project.

Well, that and the occasional onstage jam with The Olivia Tremor Control.

I'd love for it to happen, and Mangum has slowly (though sporadically) done some shows in recent years, including those brief cameos with the Elephant 6 tour, almost as if he's dipping his feet into the water again ...

But I don't know. The spotlight really wigged him out last time around, and if there is a NMH reunion I think the hype might be too nuts for him.

If it happens, I'm there.

I bought my ticket this morning, so I'll be there anyway. :) I'm a huge Superchunk and Spoon fan, and if they manage to wrangle half of the bands I'm wishing for that have yet to be announced, It'll be a good time. And if not, the Durham Bulls are in town at the same time, so maybe I'll catch a game while I'm there.

You might be right about the hype factor, though. Rumor creators might be ensuring that it doesn't happen, by trying to make a big deal about it when it's still a wish of a hope of a dream. I could see him making a cameo, or playing an unannounced set some night.

Or maybe I'm just overly hopeful and slightly sad and bitter because I got to the Lounge Ax too late to get in when they opened up for Superchunk 11 years ago.

Wow, Brian's in the World-Inferno Friendship Society? that means I've had socially awkward moments with BOTH of his bands.

My girlfriend at the time and I dressed up as the Dolls for Halloween and then went to their show the next day in costume. Amanda just sort of looked at us funny when we passed her at the door.

And a couple of years earlier, I'd met Maura from the Friendship Society at a Nick Cave show in New York. I somehow ended up drinking wine with them (and another straggler we'd picked up) afterward and getting pretty obliviously drunk and then somehow getting ditched and having to find my way across the city to the bus I was taking back to Boston.

I know people make up stuff to post on Fark, like saying they know so-and-so, but really, if I were making this stuff up, I'd have myself come off a lot cooler.

Clearly you all like them, and that's fine. Not trying to piss on your parade.

However

I find them to be the most pretentious crap band I've ever heard. I seriously can't see how anyone could like them once they got out of high school and stopped spending all their time with the drama club.

Sorry, I just feel strongly about that. Flame on.

NO U

I fully acknowledge they're probably the most pretentious band of the 90's, but dammit, I love that album and want to see if this project will do well.

Envy - Wanting what someone else has

Yeah, see, a troll is when you stake out a false position simply for the sake of being controversial and generating angry responses. Are you new to teh internets or just not very bright?

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is NOT a good album. its a bad album. this mistake has encouraged the creation of countless pieces of bad art. mangum a) writes terrible faux-deep lyrics that are mish-mash disguised as insight and poetry b) his music is bad-simple. holland 1945 is one four-chord move all the way through. the ramones are vivaldi by comparison. c) uses the passion in his voice and his keyboard orchestras to trick you into thinking he's got depth of feeling. he doesn't. what he has is childish mis-understood vagueries of undigested experience mixed with uber-cool "vulnerability" and "non-conformism" d) is a pussy.

its passionate-sounding vocals and hipster cache. listen to this when indie/emo has passed and see if you still like it. it takes being a pussy and elevates it to fantastic sublime heights, but it in no way redeems the lack of insight and groove.

i warn you, i won't respond to your whiney ad hominem reactions to this post.

At the point that you Boobiesed, there were 15 explicitly DD-related comments and 10 NMH-related posts, with some other unclear ones. It wasn't a DD thread or an NMH thread.

So you can see how I'd be confused.
