I have really tried to get into them. I have Zen Arcade, Metal Circus, and New Day Rising. Their stuff is definitely cool but just fails to knock the shiat out of my ass. Am I missing anything by them that I dont have that may change my mind or should I just them more listens?

Try giving Candy Apple Grey a few listens. That album got me into them.

Give Warehouse Songs & Stories a whirl. At least the first half. In your defense though, you shouldn't feel bad if you never get them. They are what they are. Nothing much to get.

I love Husker Du...if you're not into it, you're probably not ever going to be.

Grant Hart's solo work was always superior to Mould's, IMHO.

Perfect timing on this article. I've been listening to Husker Du, Sugar, and his solo stuff all week.

No mention of WCW?

try "flip your wig."

I liked the part where he said the days of Husker Du would be "hard to recreate." Yeah, he's probably a bit old to be taking massive amounts of cheap trucker speed because he couldn't afford to eat.

bbernardini 2009-04-07 03:19:31 PM
I've had trouble getting into the Husker Du stuff as well, but the Sugar albums and pre-"Modulate" Mould solo albums are some of my favorite releases of all time. (They're also one of the rare groups/artists my wife and I can actually agree on.)

Thanks everyone. It looks like I have some rockin ahead of me. That is always such a comforting feeling.

Rock on, Fark, rock on. Cheers!

I have really enjoyed Bob's last two solo efforts. Both have been in the regular rotation since I bought them and in true Mould fashion, I hear different nuances every listen.

Had'em in the student club I booked in '84. Here's the flyer:

www.thirdav.com

Lol, those were the days... very low quality punk art for what was a very high quality show! You had to see them live, their energy onstage was incredible... if you saw them you know where Kurt got his best moves.

We paid 'em $500! Now that was a bargain...

That's the one for me too.

Ive met Bob Mould. Really nice guy.
I'm met David Byrne and that guy's an asshole.

When i read that, I assumed that you had no musical taste, but a quick check of your profile puts that notion to rest. They might just be one of those bands that just don't do it for you. I've yet to meet anyone who just kinda likes them, it's either love or indifference.

If Flip Your Wig or Candy Apple Grey don't do it, it's not going to happen. Move along, listen to a Minutemen or X or Bad Brains album, and comfort yourself with the thought that thousands of Husker Du fans probably can't get into one of those bands.

I am actually listening to them right now and am enjoying 'Everything Falls Apart' alot especially Statues and Amusement. I think it is good to start from the beginning sometimes. They sound like a weird blend of alot of bands and I think I didnt give them a chance. I have devoted the afternoon to them and have had a pretty good time. With the prompting of other Farkers I think I may come into this session with a more open mind.

And from the article this guys seems real cool. Im interested in checking out his solo stuff because it comes highly recommended by Farkers who's opinions I hold in high regard when it comes to tunes.

Cheers friend.

I'm okay with that. Husker Dü was a great band, but their time as a live band has come and gone.

Just let it go, man... just let it go. It will never be 1985 again.

If you didn't like New Day Rising, you're probably out of luck.
That was Husker Dü at there peak.

If you haven't done so already, maybe you should try getting into the Replacements instead (start with Let It Be).

Damn, *their*, not "there". I hate it when that happens.

Those guys I like from song one.

I have been listening to Husker Du all afternoon now and I think I figured out what was bothering me. I was putting too much weight in 'Zen Arcade' because tat was the critically acclaimed album you hear about the most. While it is solid I have found today that I like the other albums alot more. New Day Rising is good but I really like 'Everything Falls Apart'

Interesting. It never occurred to me to recommend going backward from Zen Arcade, since that seems to be the point where they began to coalesce their sound into something original. But hey, as long as you're digging it, dig it.

I traded my roommate at the time my copy of Pearl Jam's Ten for his Copper Blue.

To this day, we both think we got the better deal.

Bob was the only celeb I got tongue tied in front of. He was friendly, gracious. I bought a cd at the merch counter and turned into "The Chris Farley Show"

Intolerance
is just a brilliant album, and was pretty roundly ignored since SST was fizzling out and Mould was signed to Virgin. That said, it's heartwarming to note that there's multiple covers of "2541" there are out there (Marshall Crenshaw and Robert Forster, for starters).

Pretty much this.

These guys are just wasted on me. I've never seen what all the excitement is about.

Same for Elvis Costello.

But, as they say, if we all liked the same things life would be pretty boring.

My take on Hüsker Dü's catalog:

Zen Arcade is their most important album
Flip Your Wig is probably their best album
New Day Rising is my favorite album (of theirs).

I like the others too, but those are the three key ones.

I saw Mould in San Fran after Workbook. Top 5 gigs all time for me. That gig defined "mesmerizing performance" for me.

/and yes, even that memory makes me feel old
//not quite as old as my Day on the Green memories
///sigh

July 4 1979, Oakland Coliseum, Journey,J.Geils,UFO,Thin Lizzy, Nazareth,The Rockets

Journey sucked, Geils and Lizzy awesome, UFO really good, Rockets inconsequential, and Nazareth worst of all.

I'm old too.

Another vote for Copper Blue as maybe my favorite album ever. District Line is pretty darn good too. About to listen to the new one for the first time, we'll see.
