Megain: the ad

Well I came to find the link to it, I saw it. I am going outside for a smoke (away from my kids) I will comment on it when I get back.

Maybe if smoking tended to kill you in your child-bearing years when it would be more likely that you had a 3 year old. If they wanted to make that "connection" they should have shown a 35 year old "boy" crying because his mom dies at 68 instead of 74.

Quit's media manager Edwina Pearse said her organisation was delighted by the New York reaction.

Well of course they were; sociopaths are always delighted by other people's revulsion.

It's a child actor, guys. It's not real.

Kreist, people are easily manipulated.

balin007 2009-04-05 10:55:37 PM
OK,

So the AD shows a kid crying. It gets the point across just like it needs to. Smoking kills. I know I smoke (I have kids but i do not smoke around them, in my house, or in the car when they are in it) but even I get the point of the message. I don't see why it should shock anyone anymore than any other ad though. Smoking kills, we all know it. I am trying to quit, and if this gets the point home quicker to people then use it.

Ummmmm why don't you read the story. It was real. The kid was not acting.

From TFA:

Quit Victoria executive director Fiona Sharkie told the Today show that the child actor from Melbourne named Alexander had shed real tears after losing his mother during the shoot.

If the ad causes enough controversy, maybe people will start to take the message seriously.

Sort of like another shocking ad campaign from several years ago ;)

Boo hoo smoking kills, if you don't want to dramatically increase your odds of an early death (abandoning your kids in the process) then don't smoke.

Meh, given the addictiveness of cigarettes, I doubt it's highly linked.

That's why I think that ads should show a girl really getting raped. Forget the girl, it's the message that's important. She'll get over it....

It doesn't, though. This is simple-minded garbage, and doesn't address smoking AT ALL, but simply tries to appeal to one's emotions.

You could've said ANYTHING in that commercial. It could've been about driving under the influence, smoking crack, or flying in a farking airplane.

puffy999 [TotalFark] 2009-04-06 02:23:26 AM
Hell, you can make a commercial that says "if you masturbate, you will DIE. Think of your kids... you don't want to DIE, do you?"

I mean, it will be true!

/anyway, this era of incredible idiocy in media, centered around "protecting kids," needs to go away

doglover [TotalFark] 2009-04-06 02:29:04 AM
The anti-smoking people are worse blight on society than crackheads, dragon-chasers, and lung cancer combined. What about all the kids left alone while mom buys tampons? Let's ban those next! I'm sure there's something in coton that leads to an increased risk of cooter cancer. They certainly are bad for you if ya smoke them.

Seriously, anti-smokers: DIASmokehouse.

yarnothuntin 2009-04-06 02:29:04 AM
These ads are stupid and pointless. How many people see an ad and say, "Gee, I guess I'll quit smoking cuz the TV told me to"? People will quit when they are ready to and for their own reasons. These ads are just like nagging mothers- and I already have a nagging mother.

I like the truth ad that shows a giant rat crawling out of the subway and dies holding a sign saying something to the effect of "cigarette smoke contains cyanide, just like rat poison". Ever heard of the drug Coumadin (Warfarin)? Guess what its original use was.

overfienduglar 2009-04-06 02:32:53 AM
Afterf not having a smoke since june 20th of 07. That ad finally broke me down. I went and had a cigarette. It did feel nice to smoke again.

thestr1ker 2009-04-06 02:32:58 AM
Fark is so filled with smokers who revel at the mere idea of killing someone via secondhand smoke under the guise of "mah freedom!" that it doesn't surprise me one bit that most of the Farkers so far have been less than supportive of the ad's message.

Geez Americans are a bunch of soft-cock retards. You should see the rest of the anti-smoking, anti-drink driving and anti-speeding ads we have here. You'd all end up comatose. Americans need to harden the fark up and stop doing things that cause yourself and others harm.

probably told him his mom is a robot and only had him to use as a host body when he's big enough.

That's what I used to tell my sister. That got her crying pretty good LOL

Remove all Republicans: Yeah, but it's always good to stop smoking.

It's good to stop using TV as a teaching tool, but that doesn't mean parents will listen. Unless, maybe, someone has another doomsday ad (which is what this ad reminds me of) that involves aa child.

redcliffe: You should see the rest of the anti-smoking, anti-drink driving and anti-speeding ads we have here.

I've seen them. They should be run in this country.

Of course, they're in absolutely no way related to this particular ad, as those go more for shock value, and this goes more toward puritanical over-the-top child lust.

Jesus christ, he's an actor, man. He knew what was going on. He was prepped. Maybe it should be fun to turn this around - are you repping the pussification of America?

The real wussies are the ones that want to cry at a farking advertisement.

People are upset about the AD?

I'm a smoker, and IMO, it's something smokers should think about. I recently got married, and will soon have kids of my own to raise. I promised my wife that the minute she told me she was pregnant, I will go outside, have a cigarette, and then quit.

Now go ahead, this is fark, after all. Poke holes in my logic and flame me. I'll be outside having a smoke.
