(BBC) Scary A centuries-old ice bridge holding back ice shelf 'the size of Jamaica' snapped in Antarctica last night - but you'd be a pinko atheist lieberal to suggest it was due to anything other than the warmth of God's love   (news.bbc.co.uk) divider line 628

Hah, I was just trying to submit this article, but that headline is much better than what I had in mind. :)

Is it enough to start the feedback to give us snow in july?

Or, alternately, you could just not be drinking Al Gore's koolaid, and instead just believe that natural climate change is occurring. But that's far too rational a position, and not nearly as troll-riffic as the headline, so I apologize in advance for any ruffled feathers.

D-Liver [TotalFark] 2009-04-05 08:52:23 PM
Only a weed smokin hippie liberal would compare the size of the ice shelf to Jamaica. Why not say it was the size of something in Mur'ka?

randomjsa 2009-04-05 08:53:02 PM
This just in: The Earth goes through periods of increased warmth and increased cooling that can last anywhere from years to centuries. The Earth has been significantly warmer and significantly colder than it is right now countless numbers of times. Climate and global temperature are not now nor have they ever been static and yes, the temperature can, does, and has fluctuated up or down abruptly.

The religion of environmentalism cannot stand the truth.

How 'bout "the size of Al Gore's electric bill"? That's pretty damn large after all.

Oh great. Cue the global warming hysteria.

Folks, the world and its climate are not a fixed, static occurence. Changes have happened through the millenia. That's just the facts, regardless of what the fear mongers will tell you - some of which will post hazy at best "facts".

The "ice bridge" wasn't always there. It was there for a few centuries - which is just a speck in the history of the Earth.

Climate change happens. It always has.

Millenia? That sounds like the earth is only thousands of years old. Maybe 6 thousand to be exact?! I know what you're up to!

No, we've gone from "There is no climate change!" to "It's natural! We didn't start it and we can't do anything about it!"

Predicting in ten-twenty years: "Limousine liberals didn't do anything about it when they should have and now it's too late so why should we destroy the economy!"

Right. But we should be entering a cold cycle right now, actually on our way to another Ice Age. Instead, it's getting warmer.

See the problem?

randomjsa: The Earth goes through periods of increased warmth and increased cooling that can last anywhere from years to centuries.

Can you show that the Earth is currently in a cycle of increased warmth, and that this period is not anomalous, as the overwhelming majority of researchers claim it is?

socalnewwaver: instead just believe that natural climate change is occurring

Can you show the mechanism by which this natural change occurs, and further show that this mechanism is having the largest net effect on current trends?

JK8Fan: Climate change happens. It always has.

If you truly believe this, what preparations are you making to survive the coming mass extinction that has historically followed such natural cycles?

Why on earth would it be natural? Is there anything natural about burning thousands* of years worth of carbon over the course of 300 years?

*I presume you are a young earth creationist.

No, I don't deny it. I also don't think that man is the CAUSE of it.

However, global warming will keep some scientists employed until they are able to retire. If I were a scientist in the field, I would find enough evidence of global warming to get myself enough grants to last for about 30 years of study. Then I'd just retire.

Unless said ice is 6 billion years old or so, I'm not worried in the slightest. if it wasn't for ice melting in the first place, half the world would still be under a glacier.

while i understand your sentiment and agree with what you are saying, just because our planet's temperature fluctuates doesn't mean that environmental causes are pointless. i dislike fearmongers--whether their rallying cry is "ZOMG terrorists!" or "ZOMG global warming!"--but when people take the information that environmental changes might NOT be man-made and use it to say, "well, let's keep on consuming a finite energy source and dumping the waste all over the world," how can that be a good thing?

Ah, yes, the Al Gore boogey man. Never mind all the actual scientists and reams and reams of climate studies. Nope, it's just ol' Al Gore making it all up.
