Ah, smegma. Don't be like that.

Hmmm, called wife schmoopie for a bit way back when, but for the last few years it's been Nifer. However I dont seem to have a cute nickname from her...which could be worrisome if i thought this crap was actually in anyway accurate. Personally I prefer to think we've lasted 12 years as we pretty much manage to not be complete d-bags to each other more than once a month. Ymmv.

Exactly. Common courtesy counts for SO much. How many people out there treat their partner worse than they would a stranger?

I would, if she ever called me "Schmoopie."

Schmoopie is a horrible pet name. I'm sure if I used that with my boyfriend he'd laugh his arse off at me. We do have pet names though that aren't as annoying. He calls me 'sexy'; I call him either 'Sammie' or 'Sammich'.

I'm the only one who is permitted to call him Sammy.

Precisely. Nothing makes people want to hurl more than when a couple gets all puppy-love cutsey in public, and when they kiss each other they make slurping sounds that echo in a crowded room. There is no reason for a quick peck to sound like a frickin' bj.

These 2 goods friends of mine who were dating did this shiat all the time and it was really, truly nauseating to anyone unfortunate enough to have to hear it. The absolute worst is when a couple argues without dropping the cutesy bullshiat.

I think this is yet another example of putting the cart before the horse. What I think is really going on is such behavior is an indicator of a good relationship, not a cause of it.

"Babe, beer me" is our super-secret code for requesting an icy restorative. We also use various grunts, mumblyjoesandwiches, etc. to communicate, including communiques.

My husband and I work at the same place and I've accidentally referred to him by my pet name for him when speaking to others. Like "I need to bring this back to *insert embarrassing pet name here*"
Coworker says "Huh?"
I mumble and pretend I said nothing.

/Nope, not gonna tell ya
//But he DOES call me "Schmoopie." Yeah, we're lame like that.

I will occasionally call my boyfriend "Elder" because he's an ex-Mormon (and former missionary).

It's more mocking than cutesy though.

On Gilligan's Island, Mr. Howell called his wife 'Lovey'. It was years before I found out that was actually her name.

thereadlines [TotalFark] 2009-04-05 07:45:47 PM
Man, I really should have gotten a Ph.D. in "Obvious" -- I'd get a hell of a lot more press for my research.

As it turns out, the wife and I have interesting ways of strengthening our relationship. Most of our pillow-talk consists of references to Seinfeld, Simpsons, Futurama, Twilight Zone, or obscure movies from the 1980's. For example, last night she made a reference to "Five Characters in Search of an Exit" when I was mid-thrust, and I countered with a reference to "El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Homer (3F24)", which brought her to climax.

Whether he calls you Rodeo, after the horseback-riding trip you took on your first anniversary, or you call him Speed Racer, for the time he drove 90 mph to get you to the airport on time, the names are a way of tracking your romantic history.

And both those nicknames will make you sound very impressive to anyone who overhears your conversations.

/he may have no stamina, but he still finds a way to satisfy his all-out nympho girlfriend

My fiance and I do call each other almost exclusively by nicknames. Nothing too original -- mostly "Honey/Hon" or "Cutie" or other gagworthy names like that.

But...

cheshirecatsmileyface: i prefer the "don't use cutesy names, just have a lot of sex" route.

I'd rank "frequent sex" far, far above cutesy names in terms of importance to a successful relationship. That intimacy is so very, very important.

My apparent failure to use her real name enough in favor of (admittedly non-schmoopie, at least) assorted endearment terms was one of the stated reasons my now-ex-girlfriend became upset with me.

Then again, I don't put much weight behind her stated reasons.
