That was stupid. Excavated pit + heavy rainfall = lets go digging?

Could provide some help bringing him back to the realm perhaps.

Don't be so tuff on the guy. He was in quite the corundum.

Gold, and money, can be a tricky thing. I remember this one time at the beginning of summer vacation when my two brothers and I were completely without money. We worked a small cleaning business to earn a little pocket change, but then we ran across a scientist who had invented a duplication ray. We used this duplication ray to duplicate our money, and spread it around town. Unfortunately, we produced a bubble of hyperinflation in our local area, and all money became essentially worthless. Fortunately, the duplicated money eventually imploded and everything went back to normal. It is a shame that few people have learned from our little animated experience.

Tragic, but accidents and/or unsafe working habits happen.
I have been in pits in the Guyanese jungle with near-vertical walls that have held up in the tropical weather for decades. Others might not last days. Depends on the structual stability of the pit wall material, and this geo made a bad call.

What I want to know is does this affect my investments?

Fortunately, the local news does a better reporting job, and the company he was working for is River Gold Guyana Inc., which must a local company and/or private. Not listed on any of the North American markets anyway.

There's this stuff called "shoring" that developed nations use in excavations.

Geologist / Gynecologist....same thing, they both fool around in holes.

/is my seat next to the fiery pit secure yet?

Well, they do define who we are and where we're going.

I'm a geologist and I am getting a kick out of these replies...

You should all try and be more gneiss...a geologist just died. It's chertainly a shame.

He was a French geologist.

He assumed, reasonably, that he'd be able to run away sufficiently fast.

Geologists leave that kind of stuff to the geological engineers. And chances are that this was an old abandoned pit, or an artisinal mining operation that is not condoned or controlled by government regulations (but is the way a lot of Guyanese eke out a living).
