Big deal, I play this on expert in my living room on Sundays all the time.

/Ozzy would look hilarious trying to play Rock Band

It really doesn't get much more old school than Sabbath. Their influence is undeniable and their catalog is vast. Hopefully this doesn't deteriorate into a Dio vs. Ozzy flame fest, but if it does, I'll be entertained.

Here are some recs for this week:

Grand Magus - Like the Oar Strikes the Water (new window - Clean Vocals) - This Swedish band is making some of the best Heavy Metal in the world today. They have some fantastic riffs that accompany the powerful vocals and I haven't met anyone that didn't like "Iron Will" in some way. I usually don't listen to their style of Metal, but they really drew me in with "Like the Oar Strikes the Water" and I am happy that I gave them a chance.

Disillusion - And the Mirror Cracked (new window - Clean and Harsh Vocals) - These guys play Progressive Metal mixed with Melodic Death Metal. "Back to Times of Splendor" is one of my favorite releases of all time and only gets better each time I listen to it. It's such a shame that the expectations were so high after "Back to Times of Splendor" that Disillusion chose to release "Gloria" which just angered most of their fans. I am still excited to see what else they have to offer though.

Heidevolk - Saksenland (new window - Clean Vocals) - Of course I couldn't go through a SHMHC without recommending a Folk Metal band. Heidevolk doesn't have in your face riffs or ear splitting vocals, but they do have music that just seems to put people into a good mood. If you look up the translation of their lyrics, it turns out that many of their songs are about nature.

Personally, this farker is more of the death/grind metal crowd.

However, this week someone introduced me to this video:

Steel Panther - Death to all but metal

Link (new window)

It's more "butt" metal than "but metal", but they hate the goo-goo dolls and papa-roach, so they're ok in my book.

I like this one it reminds me of one of my favorites:

Vintersorg - Till Fjälls (new window)

It's good that Black Sabbath has made it to the SHMHC but damn I wish they were greenlit last week instead of that Cattle Decapitation crap. There were too many good submissions this week: Opeth, Symphony X, Dark Tranquillity...

Speaking of folk metal, guess who's going to Paganfest 2? Bwahahaha! I was playing Korpiklaani and my wife wanted to know if she could burn them to her iPod. I asked if she wanted to see them live and she said yes. So we're going to spend the night in Seattle and go to the zoo the next day. Good farking times.

Yeah, I submitted the Symphony X one this week.

I'm happy to hear that you are going to Paganfest 2, you won't regret it. I think I will probably go get my tickets next week at the venue. I hope you have that ability so you don't have to use Rapemaster.

I did use 'Rapemaster'. It cost $58 for the two of us (ticket price $25 each). It would've cost a lot more, money and time, to go to the venue and get them.

Yeah I kind of figured that. Most of the shows I go to I just pay at the door but I don't want to risk it with Paganfest 2. Ticketmaster was going to charge me an extra $15 for one ticket, which happens to be 50% of the ticket price. I can't believe that they are still considered a legitimate business after all these years of bending customers over.

While this is farking awesome I like SHMHC for its more obscure greenlites because it sparks good convo. That convo usually results in lots of suggested listening. This does kick serious ass though so I cant complain.

I'm looking for some suggestions for new music... I like some metal, but haven't gotten very deep into the genre as a whole. I was just thinking to myself the other day that I was too young for stuff like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, and never got into them later on, I don't think I could name a single song from either. I am totally out of the loop on the modern stuff too, I just pick up random bands here and there.

Thanks to an earlier thread, I have been listening to a lot of Gojira in the last few weeks and will be seeing them next month! I'm also listening to a lot of Neurosis and Isis. I dig Opeth too, though I haven't listened to a lot lately. I accidentally saw them headline a show when I went to see the opener and then revisited them a couple years later and really got into it. So I'm not looking for Cannibal Corpse or anything like that. I like heavy, but also like a little melody, tempo variation, and some different instruments and song structures. Any thoughts?

I'm appreciating Avenged Sevenfold more these days since I've listened to stuff besides their song that got radio play (which I didn't really care for).

Well, Thurisaz is a bit Opeth like, so you might enjoy that.

Rotting Christ, despite the name, has alot of melody going on in their music, and is one of my favorite bands.

Different instruments: Sear Bliss and Phlebotomized. One uses horns, and the other uses violins.

And you're never too young for Priest or Maiden.

Say what you want about Ozzy vs. Dio, but the only Sabbath albums I have ever needed have been the first two.

I bought downloaded the new Absu album the other day, and I'm loving it. Sort of a "blackened thrash" band that sounds similar to Skeletonwitch, but I think they have way more staying power in a person's playlist. Plus, they get major bonus points for having an album cover that doesn't make your eyes bleed from staring at it.

Absu - Nunbarshegunu

The album these are off of (Requiem: Mezzo Forte) is part of a trilogy. They released Mezzo Forte, which is the 2nd part of the trilogy, first. They released the third part, Requiem: Fortissimo, second. And they should be releasing the first part later this year.

I believe that actually got the Australian National Symphony Orchestra to preform on their album.

anyways, i am glad to have the privilege to be the first to say that Ozzy Ozzbourne is a talentless hack who rode the coat-tails of the world's most solid band, ever. Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics (and solid like the rock of gibraltar) and he and Iommi wrote the songs and Bill Ward... oh Bill... Black Sabbath with or without Ozzy was AWESOME.

Crotchduster - Mammal Sauce. still cracks me up.
Coffins - The Other Side of Blasphemy. Japanese death-doom, sounds like napalm death at 10RPMs. pretty farkin' awesome, and yes, i am high.
Kreator - Enemy of God
Merciful Fate - Egypt speaking of old school...
Slayer sure likes hell... hilarious compilation of all the times slayer recorded the words hell or satan or satanic, barring choruses and repeats, on all their albums. like the metallica "death" one.
yeah, here's the metallica one.

Why would he call himself that? It's like Mirrorthrone's song "The Fecal Rebellion". I was a bit apprehensive about a 15 minute song called that but holy shiat! That's Mirrorthrone's best song for sure in my opinion.

Yes I read the lyrics and realise it's a metaphor but it's still an off-putting name for a song.

And 'Semen across lips' sounds like satanicsantoku's preferred method of brushing his teeth.

He doesn't call himself that. It's just that the album it's on, Parabastruse, spans many different styles of extreme metal, incorporating black, death, prog, avant-garde, grind, and post-rock even. Experimental metal is how I personally classify it. If you look around the internet, you could probably find the album. I believe it is under fair-use, as his follow-up project is.

After that album (his only), he changed the name to Parabastruse, and became an entirely post-rock outfit.

I actually haven't, but they sound pretty good. Black metal is always at its best when it isn't pure black metal; the actual genre by itself is incredibly limiting, but taken with a spoonful of thrash, death, prog, or whatever the hell else, it usually turns out pretty good.
