Meh, at least it wasn't an Ikea reference.

And if this tourist wanted to experience Scandinavia, Malmö isn't exactly the place to go. The police aren't allowed to enter large parts of the city that are effectively under Sharia law.

When the article oddly didn't contain a description of the robbers, I figured that none of them were named Sven.

Have you even been to Malmö? That place is vanilla, much safer than any North American city its size.

That being said, if you want to party you should head over to Copenhagen.

no worries no problems, and I'm as bleeding white as you get.

There have been multiple times where it was far too late and I was far too drunk not to have something awful happen to me in Malmö, yet it never did. The weird thing that ever happened was a Spanish guy trying to convert me to Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

Man I love Malmö

Not saying things don't happen,
they do everywhere,
hell even the little town of Ystad had a wank-o-matic pyro running about.
Just saying for being one of Sweden's most crimeridden and dangerous areas, it's really not even nearly as bad as any US town of roughly the same size.

shanewf 2009-04-05 12:27:14 PM
I spent nearly three months in Malmo. One of my co-workers there took me on a quick driving tour of the "bad part of town" early in the morning. I was shocked. I've see some bad parts of cities in North America and this area would have competed. The fire service and ambulance workers get attacked in this area and there are often various riots because muslims are upset or angry about something, which usually result in attacks on swedish women. From what he told me, those areas are basically under Sharia Law and the police don't even try to control it anymore because even if the entire police force mounted an offensive it would likely be a one-way trip for them.

That being said, the rest of the city was nice. Routinely we would walk from the train station to the hilton at all hours of the day and night and encountered no problems. He said that for now they stay in their part of the city and rarely does the violence come to the tourist parts of town.

I was there during the anti-globalization marches, which made things quite interesting. The Hilton hired security and some window were broken out in the next building. Also saw a communist riot of some sort. The right-wing party set up a booth on the street and next thing you know a bunch of young know-it-all kids were there throwing food at them. The police sort of stood around on horses with a look of "oh no, what next".

yeah, Malmö's 'crime problem' is laughable - it's probably the safest I've ever felt in any city I've lived in.

BTW, are you planning on going to the EuroFark party in A-dam in June?

Born in Norrland myself, Skåne ain't half as safe as home, but that's besides the point, now I lock the door when I go out, but that's roughly as far as my security has changed...

Nah not this time around, Univ's ending end of June. :/

Yeah Malmö is boring and the booze is expensive.

And there's practically no crime at all in Sweden, except tax evasion, which is understandable.

svenbertil 2009-04-05 02:32:45 PM
Maybe Malmö is not as bad as some American ghetto with 100% Negro population, but it is a crime-ridden crap hole by Swedish standards.

Malmo is safe? Are you kidding? The city is teeming with very angry "youths" AKA recent immigrants from certain Arab speaking countries. These youths are under employed and resentful of Sweden's decadent ways. The vast majority of Malmo's crime problems center on this large and angry group.

FTFA: When the film team took a break and the cameramen left the site to photograph their children who had also accompanied the team, Hideki Kaji was left to guard the equipment, dressed as a pineapple.

"OK people, vacation fun-time. Let's leave the talent stranded with all our costly gear while we go take those all-important kiddie snaps for Gramma-san."

That is one big brimmin' bowl of WTF right there.

I mean, I know that Japanese people's vacations are ruined if they don't photograph absolutely everything, but this is...shiat.

The female muslim busdrivers with headscarves would probably scare him shiatless anyway.
