"Despite their fame, they've never made an effort to cash in. People believe in them. That's why they're still there."

Even though they have not made a good album since 1988 and everything after Justice was mass produced garbage to make money.

I read the headline and was intrigued.

I clicked the article and I loled.

So, I guess "cashing in" doesn't include suing Napster users.

Ahahaha, I don't know anyone to whom even old Metallica is still musically relevant, except maybe the hardcore/thrash scene these days, and that's been sufficiently transformative and their aesthetic sure as hell has nothing to do with Metallica's, ever.

Cash in now, honey.

And the guys who wrote THAT line are a lot more deserving of recognition than the aforementioned band.

Let me show you how this is WRONG.

Ok...

And why do none of these articles about the RnR HoF ceremony say anything about Jeff Beck being inducted as well? The big news tonight is that Jimmy Page is inducting him and jamming with him later on in the night.

can someone explain to me why people care about the rock n roll hall of fame? is there a legitimate reason to care about it, or is it like the grammies and just retarded nonsense?

Yeah, nothing they've done is relevant lately. Except Death Magnetic out-sold the last U2, Coldplay and Radiohead CDs.

Best damn CD they've put out since Justice. Too bad it took 20 years.

I read the headline, saw the tag, and thought that no-one in their right mind could possibly say that about Metallica with a straight face, and still knew that it would be them as I clicked the link.

Despite having made a few excellent albums in the eighties (and Black Album in 1991), I really can't see anything worthwhile about Metallica since then. Load was the beginning of their downfall, and despite trying hard to do something like Metallica from twenty years ago might have on Death Magnetic, they just ended up being the prime example of how shiatty an album can sound when you have a producer who thinks that the average fan is unable of adjusting his volume, and rather does you the favour of turning every knob, dial and slider all the way to painfully loud. They've stopped being relevant a long time ago, and they are now only a sad running gag about RIAA.

I've heard three different songs from Death Magnetic on my local heavyish rock station. Apparently they keep picking the suck songs from the album... which are the good ones?

/and if you say "The Day That Never Comes Song That Never Ends," I'm driving to wherever it is you live, and I'm going to punch you right in the throat.

I have liked every Metallica album, from Kill 'Em All to Death Magnetic. I don't like all of them for the same reason, but I understand that musicians tastes and styles will change or evolve over time. While St. Anger sounded like shiat, and Death Magnetic certainly sounds like the band is gasping to return to where it used to be, I still like them.

That said, they totally sold out. I own Guitar Hero: Metallica. That game is an obvious gesture of dedicated fandom by the developers, and its a really good game. Still, your name doesn't get on any games, movies, toys or anything else other than records without your selling out of your musical ideals.

peart2112: Is Rush in the rnrhof yet?

Nope.

No Rush, no Kiss, No Monkees... I know of the three, Rush is the most talented, but all three did something specific for Rock and pop music, and are being shut out.

Hell, I'd say Metallica is the Kiss of their generation (as far as being sell-outs), and they're making it in. Even Madonna is in the hall, and she's nowhere near being Rock.

So fark it. the Rock Hall is a farce anyway.

Kinda hard to sell out under those terms.

I'm also a fan, and I know Kiss never pretended to have integrity, but this last decade has found Gene and Paul somehow managing to have even less integrity than anyone could have thought possible. I think they're the center of a giant black hole that sucks all artistic integrity into the center of the vortex and spits out Kiss caskets and condoms.

But, this is about Metallica, and I still consider the whole Napster thing to seem like something Gene Simmons would've done. I've gotten past it, and don't have an automatic, kneejerk anti-Metallica reaction like many here still do, but that Napster thing seemed, to me, like Lars was trying to rival Gene Simmons on the douchebag scale.

For what it's worth, I seem to recall reading somewhere (on the INTERNET, so I know that it must be true) that one of that main guys behind the RNRHOF stated that Kiss would never be inducted to the hall of fame as long as he had anything to say about it.

But, this is about Metallica, and I still consider the whole Napster thing to seem like something Gene Simmons would've done. The main thing that the Napster episode did was make me take a long look at a band that I had spent years (since Cliff died) defending to friends of mine who had quit listening to them. I defended them for Load, which had little going for it, and I defended them for Reload, which had even less. Cover albums and live concerts with an orchestra don't count, the black album is the last thing that they did that was even listenable, and Justice is the last decent thing that they recorded.

"We had saved some money so we did a little demo
which we called 'No Life Till Leather' and we passed
it around to our friends and they passed it around to
theirs and all of a sudden we were getting letters from
all over Europe because the band was being listened
to over there. We were all freaked out."

There is no comparison between Kiss selling out and Metallica selling out. There is no Metallica toilet paper, caulking gun, coffin, etc.. like Kiss has. Kiss have always been whores and they make no bones about it. Metallica are whores(Guitar Hero/Action Figure sets/etc..), well not Kiss style whores anyway, but will deny it with their last breath.

Endzone108 2009-04-04 10:30:13 PM
I don't care what anyone says, you put any song from the first 4 albums on and you totally forget about all the crappy songs or silly things Metallica has done since.

Call them sell outs if you want but for that reason alone they deserve all the fame and fortune they have.

You're right. On the merchandising level, Kiss are the champion whores, beaten only by Disney creations.

But is it better to be a whore, acknowledge it, and embrace it, or be a whore, deny it, but still accept that 50 bucks thrown on the bed after someone has wiped their dick on your curtains?

Aw, hell, who cares? I ain't farking any of them, so I'm not getting money out of it. Both bands have great early albums (depending on your musical preference), and that's good enough.

Everything after And Justice is crap. I liked Black when it came out but as I matured, and actually listened to lyrics for Enter Sandman I realized they were crap. And of course they kicked me off Napster so Lars could but another piece of million dollar art. Fark you, Metallica. I will never buy another album on principal alone.

And to think that the last album was successful after getting back to your roots? Isn't that selling out in and of itself? I mean if you want to put out music to the likes of St Anger then you should have stuck with what you know.
Fark you, Metallica.

Hahaha, same. I have e-mailed SiriusXM twice now, asking if Metallica was giving them payola to coincide with the timing of the new Guitar Hero.

In principle, I don't understand who decides that "hey, decreasing the diversity of a station from one genre to ONE ARTIST benefits our listeners!" That was always a Sirius MO, but I won't say that XM wouldn't have done it on their own with the way they both kept losing money and crying about bandwidth.

But for as much as I love most of the styles they play on that station (what is it called now, "XL Metal"?) I will never enjoy Metallica or Megadeth. I mean they play some garbage too like Cradle of Filth, and I wouldn't normally go out of my way to download the new Lamb of God but it's okay.

I'm surprised that people like "Kill Em All". Out of the ones I own(S&M and earlier), it's my least favorite.

But I wouldn't call them the 'gold standard for contemporary metal'. Even Judas Priest fits that one better.

And yes, Lars waged a public and ill-received campaign against file-sharing. Good on him for it, too. Goods and services have never been free, freetards.
