Maher was polite and civil. He allowed Joe to speak freely about his views and beliefs. Which was brilliant, as it served to further show how clueless the boy is.

The GOP has created several monsters, which have escaped their control and are now running loose across the countryside.

Good stuff.

So does anyone know how that tax rate increase will offset all of the spending that has been proposed and /or already approved? It doesn't and soon enough everyone will be paying more. Whether it's a hidden tax like a carbon tax, higher property taxes to keep the local coffers full, sin taxes, etc. Another likely tax increase coming down will be the removal of the SSN ceiling. The phase outs for mortgage interest deductions, child care, student loan interest, and charities as well as the AMT are still in place to ensure that the "rich" pay their fair share.

It is alot more than just a three plus point bump at the highest bracket and everyone will be participating especially in blue states like California, New York,Illinois, and Connecticut.

A tax rate increase or letting the Bush tax cuts expire?

39% is not 39%.

If you are making enough money to put you in that "marginal" tax, you probably have huge tax deductions.

Again, back to "marginal" tax rates, if you don't understand them, shame.

Finally, aren't we just undoing the tax cut damage done by the Bush Administration, which blew the whole into the budget to start with.

If Maher were really interested in hearing from a conservative he would have brought out a legitimate voice such as George Will, Charles Krauthammer, or any other number of conservative pundits. Instead, he brings out that jackass who speaks for no-one that I know of and is basically just grist for the liberal mill. It's good TV but its not representative of my views anyway.

"Fair tax" is the ultimate in Orwellian-style language marketing, and I refuse to acknowledge their chosen meaning for a common descriptive phrase.

When I lived in New Jersey 10 years ago I wound up paying 58% of my income overall in taxes...gas tax, sales, income, property..etc....we also included the fees the government charged us to do things like register vehicles and renew my license as well as other "fees".....And I made less then 100k that year.

Its easy to focus on a 3% tax increase and if you're not part of the class that pays it to say its no big deal.

On average how much of your total incomes go to paying taxes/fees.

I'm sure you were equally incensed by the right-wing fascination with Cindy Sheehan, Bill Ayers, and Rev. Wright.

And none of them were given a prominent role in presidential campaign.

There will be no more taxes under Chairman Obama's new plan. All workers will receive a small stipend each week. Said stipend will be spent on dry, hard bread and rough, single ply toilet paper after waiting 3-4 hours on line at the local co-op. All other commodities such as water and fuel will be rationed according to each worker's needs. Health care will be provided free of charge for all workers, but we will be returning to the simpler, more cost effective, leech-friendly medicine of the 1800s.

The remainder of what used to be your wages will go to building the new Chairman's Golden Monuments of Glory, which will replace the Lincoln Memorial and Washington's Monuments in the renamed capital city of New Kenya.

Really, what tax deductions? Clearly no-one on this thread earns much or you would understand my post. Bush's tax cuts expiring is only the tip of the iceberg. I cannot make what I wrote above any more clear. The administration is only going after high WAGE EARNERS. He is not going after the truly wealthy who live off of trusts and other "old money" strategies. if he did so he would alienate a huge portion of the limosuine libs who paid $2000 a plate to hear him speak during the campaign. It also nicely feeds the class warfare angle nicely, which is also evident in this thread.

BTW, citing Bush's tax policies as ruinous is a bit disengenuous when Obama has already run up the largest tab in US history.

Oh yeah, it's the liberals that are sending JtP on speaking tours, inviting him to fund-raisers; they're the ones that invited him on campaign appearances.
