Here is a link to the seismograph:
Seismo (new window)
Yesterday the entire mountain was covered in snow.
I'm guessing that there might be a little flooding going on downstream. I think there is an oil storage facility at the base of the mountain.

This is normal for Alaska.
Now, if this were happening in NYC, people would think it was big news, for some reason.

DarthBrooks [TotalFark] 2009-04-04 12:44:15 PM
It's strange and somewhat counterintuitive when looking at the infrared satellite images of the plumes (clicky)

The white parts are the *coldest* parts of the plume. The reason that they're cold instead of hot is because the ash is tossed so high into the atmosphere, so it cools the fastest.

Weird, wonderful stuff.

It will be bigger news if the ash cloud fills the sky in Juneau and boogies down along the leftward coast.

Population density of greater than one person per thousand acres?

Probably because it's a camera that is posting its images on the web.

Maybe.

If it's not live enough for you, then hop on a plane and go look at it in person.

"Oooooh, these webcams from everywhere in the world--they're so busted. When are we going to get total sensory immersion?"

Dwight_Yeast: Population density of greater than one person per thousand acres?

Alaska has a fair amount of air traffic headed all over the world flying through its airspace. Volcanic ash plumes can wreak real havoc with airplanes.

/not that the usual Outsider cares, unless his Asian tentacle porn is in the cargo plane that mistakenly flies through that ash plume...and crashes.

Perhaps you haven't been online all that long (relatively speaking). Early webcams were not full streaming and included variable refresh rates.

I wonder what the effects for the worlds weather will be. When St. Helens blew I think it lowered the average global temp 2 degrees Fahrenheit. Why do I fear someone is going to use it as evidence against global warming.

No Idea. But when you melt 10 feet of snow off of half of a mountain overnight there is likely to be some serious flooding downstream.

My guess: Drift River Terminal is drifting in the ocean.

Seen uncited claims of the eruption lowering global temps by 0.1° C. But 2° F? No way.
