Love The Fall.... IN the late 70s,early 80s they did weird shiat with 2 drummers much before the Butthole Surfers did... Then in the late 80s they did electronic stuff before Cabaret Voltaire diod, basically, consistently beating every band to the punch in every style imaginable
If you think Frank Zappa released a lot of records, Check out the Fall's discography

"Victoria" is pretty straight sounding, one of my fave song is "The Classical" (new window).... from his 2 drummer phase... insistent bass riff is insistent

Nope - this is not an exception although I will admit it was a good cover - for a band that sucks

Psychotropic 2009-04-04 01:32:58 PM
I found the video to be entertaining however the performance of the song was in no way superior to The Kinks version.

I wished the Fall had performed this when I saw them live. Instead, they did I Can Hear The Grass Grows, which was all sorts of interesting.

/as much as I love the Fall
//I love the Kinks more

Methinks sire, you should be kicketh in the groin. Repeatedly.

As a longtime fan of The Kinks, I am offended by the implication in the headline.

/Seriously though, how hard must you suck to take a song by a sloppy and amateurish 60's band and make it sound WORSE?

While I agree with your sentiment on subby's, shall we say, lack of talent spotting ability, I do have a small bone to pick. You consider the Kinks sloppy and amateurish, yet you are a longtime fan? Which band called the Kinks have you been listening to all these years? Or are you implying that their early years were less than stellar in comparison to the other acts of the day? Slightly befuddled is all....

DoctorCal 2009-04-04 03:16:45 PM
Adding my disagreement, and the observation that the singer has a little bit of a Lou Reed sound going.

The song is listenable enough, overall, but, you know, it's hard to give them much credit for that.

tillerman35 2009-04-04 03:19:43 PM
As always, I have to give credit to anyone who is brave enough to put themselves in front of an audience to entertain them.

Unfortunately, as a member of that audience, I have to say "not for me, thanks."

Comparing the Butthole Surfers with The Fall? Really?

Is it true?? Really, a Fark thread about the Fall???

The Fall actually have an inordinate amount of covers - probably 1 or 2 on every one of their 25+ albums. I didn't know the song "White Lightning" was a George Jones song until years after I heard the Fall version.

Love how an earlier poster posted a link to The Classical - an all time the Fall great. Allegedly, they were to sign a contract with Motown records and this song nixed it.

Only in the sense that The Fall did stuff in the early 80s that was experimental and backed by a repetitive double-drum attack. If you heard the song I linked, there's a similarity in sound. But the comparison ends there.
The Butthole surfers are originality personified and one of my all-time fave band. You can't touch these guys

are you implying that their early years were less than stellar in comparison to the other acts of the day?

Well, "Arhtur" came out sometime in '69. That was the year of Deep Purple, ("Taliesyn"), Bee Gees ("Odessa"), "Tommy" (!!), "Abbey Road" (!!!), Jethro Tull, CCR and so on and so forth. Like I said, I love the Kinks, but objectively speaking a lot of their back catalog is quite painful to listen to.

And those Adam Ant ripoffs still managed to mess it up!

Millzners 2009-04-04 04:46:30 PM
Covers better than the original? My vote is for Ray Charles covering Johnny Cash's Ring of fire (new window) It's probably a matter of taste, but I think it has a little something Johnny's version didn't.

Oh, and if you want to feel immense anguish and fear read the comments, where people have been commenting on how some american idol douche sang the song better than Ray.

Fair enough I guess...I still don't think they were amateurish or sloppy. I think the word would be understated? I find I have to be in a certain mood to fully enjoy them, but dang can they put on a good show. Saw them twice in Toronto and almost saw them in Rhode Island til Dave or Ray went and had his nervous breakdown....

love the kinks. love the fall.

i didn't think there was much to be done to that song to make it sound even more british, but the fall did exactly that.

you're absolutely correct. I think the CAB have been recording since the late 70s. What I meant to say is that The Fall did stuff that was sounding a lot like the Cab "micro-phonies" and "The covenant the sword, the arm of the lord" phase

Ah, Victoria. The Fall at their poppiest.
Mark E. Smith is a cranky genius, IMO

"This is the three R's

Oh, and I like the early Surfers stuff a lot (they lost it by Pioughed), but they don't come close to The Fall.

Better than the original.

Tom Jones - Kiss.

I liked the Judybats' version of "Animal Farm".

Also, Versus' cover of "Shangri-La" was very good.

Better than the original: Dave Edmunds' cover of Nick Lowe's "I Knew The Bride."

Even betterer: Dave Edmunds' cover of John Fogerty's "Almost Saturday Night"
