Heh, my high school in Memphis a large (I think 94 acre) campus in the middle of east Memphis. One year the seniors decided to release a bunch of goats on campus. It took the school over 2 years to finally catch the last goat.

Perhaps this variety of goat is different from the ones I've experienced. The ones I've seen will bite, and can cause some damage from a head-butt.

This is probably the first time I've heard the phrase 'green pet' but it does make sense.

With cats and dogs, you have this huge pet food industry shipping stuff all over the country, toy factories and the bulk of the veterinarian population. Fancy fish get flown in from all over the world and you probably have a constant electrical consumption with pumps and lights.

With a goat, you've got ... well.. a goat. A relatively quiet lawn mower. And maybe something to eat. And something to rope if you're bored.

There is a huge problem with people getting goats as pets. Apparently they get them because they are fun on a trampoline, but then the rest of the neighborhood hates them for it.

I've wanted to get a goat for a while, but I'm afraid of running into the same problem as this kid (no pun intended.) They eat garbage, trim your yard, and it would be a great playmate for my herding dog.

But I'm afraid the critter would escape and run all over town. This place has seen weirder things, but I'd hate to have to get my goat out of the pound.

As a neighbor, I'd be more pissed about the chickens than the goat. Chickens are loud and obnoxious.

That said, as a condition of having a goat, the owner should be required to have a fence in place. That fence, in turn, should be a chain link or solid wood type that the goat cannot get its head through. I'd be equally pissed if all of my plants next to the property line were stripped bare.

I fail to see how a miniature goat is more of a nuisance than a barky dog or the free-range cats that poop in kids' sandboxes.

You do have to clean up after a goat. My mother owned a goat for a while. Seems like an easy automatic lawnmower, but then you have to clean goat poo instead of cut grass. A trade off, really.
