It's a bill. Nothing's changed, kids.

And coming next week - 1000% increase on taxes for it.

All my pint glasses are 20 oz. You can't fit 16 oz plus head in a glass that is only 16 oz. This is one of my pet peeves. I guess the businesses could still serve short pints if they just replaced the word pint with medium.

/Oregon is doing it right.

"Oregon takes its beer seriously, and it bolsters our credentials about taking our beer seriously."

This is true. I've got some relatives up there and micro-brew houses are like coffee houses everywhere else - even in the small towns like Ashland or Grants Pass. The bill is silly and frivilous and cool all at once. Part of the charm of that place.

Too bad i can't freaking stand rain.

People can turn pasty white, get fat, beat their wives, drive drunk, have their kids watch them make asses of themselves, lose their jobs, etc. Good job law makers. While your at it, please make sure people don't get shorted buying crack. Make sure it doesn't have too much baking soda in it. MORONS"

What kind of person goes to a bar to watch people drink beer? Do they sit right next to you and stare with open-mouth wide-eyed horror, or do they just observe from a treadmill accross the room, so they don't get fat and pasty white?
That's hilarious, though... crazy really is everywhere.

I frequently ask for a pint glass when I order a bottle of beer. Sometimes the pint-shaped glass will fill up completely when the contents of a 12 oz. bottle are poured into it. When this happens, I make a mental note to never order draft beer at that bar.

When I find a place of business that short changes me I spend my money elsewhere. In Oregon they invent yet more government. Seriously, are people so incompetent at life that they need help to drink a beer? Pathetic.

Dude, really? Beer is better in a wide-mouthed glass when you can smell it. And the head releasing the cabonation just before the inhale just makes it better. I'm not talking a third of a glass, because that pisses me off too. But an ounce's worth on the top? I'm not going to notice the 28 cents

This was my favorite one from the comment section! I wanted to correct that person's misuse of the word "your" in the second to last sentence as it should be "you're". Moron, indeed!

Yup. This pint deal is honestly a pointless change since the idiots lawmakers here (iirc its folks from Portland area and Eugene) think levying a huge tax increase per keg or barrel on in-state produced brews is gonna help our budget issues. Yes, lets tax one of our few remaining industries of value during a recession because no way will brewers have to pass this on to customers and no way will customers start buying cheaper beer in a recession.

Exactly, yes.

I'm just a bill.
Yes, I'm only a bill.
And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey
To the capital city.
It's a long, long wait
While I'm sitting in committee,
But I know I'll be a law someday
At least I hope and pray that I will,
But today I am still just a bill.

Um, this is Oregon. Apart from maybe a couple months in Summer, pasty white is really your only option.

not a big deal... they do this in europe, there's just a little line indicating where to fill. i think it helps make a perfect pour, personally. they do the same with shots.

I know. One of the reasons we have such a strong brewing industry is because of the low beer tax.

I should be closing closing on a house in Eugene though shortly, and be able to brew my own. I have to find a couple of hops starts though for my garden...

these "let the market decide" morans are something special.

Yes! let's let the market decide what a "gallon" of milk is. or hell, why don't we just allow cheese producers to redefine what an ounce is...after all, you can always vote with your wallet! if any of those farkers tried to pull that crap, you can bet there would be legislation related to fixing it.

should the state spend days debating this bill? no. should it have been introduced at all? certainly, assuming this is an issue that "The People" are concerned about in Oregon.

eggi541 2009-04-04 02:46:26 PM
I love this state, a total and complete madhouse. This past legislative session has bicyckists allowd to roll through stop signs and stop lights, online schools in danger of being shut down, and now the debate over the size of a glass of beer. The freakin unemployment rate topping %15 and these are the items the legislature is debating. Too bad I left Cali the day Arny was selected to be the Fudgeinator.....

pizznumpkin 2009-04-04 03:53:18 PM
Hey eggi.... Oregon unemployment is 11 percent, dumbass! Also, this is an important issue for consumers. We take quality beer seriously and don't like getting screwed over. Like it or lump it; take it down the road and dump it.

Let's hurry this up and start talking about beer and posting beer porn.

If you're in the Boston area, I recommend picking up some Harpoon Leviathan Quad. It comes in a 4-pack, and it's delicious. Just came out recently.

I see that the 'a pint is 20oz' crowd has done their work, so I will simply offer my condolences to Americans that you're pints are small. (like your penises)

oogmar 2009-04-04 05:06:04 PM
Beer and cigarettes, statistically America's solution during economic recessions, now being so taxed that it's almost cheaper to just buy the white stuff and it IS cheaper to buy the green.

Not that I'm into either. It's just hard to avoid these things in Portland. :P

My reasons for the pint glass include the release of carbonation and the ability to smell what I'm drinking. I also actually like the fact that the room-temp glass will warm the ale a few degrees above the 33 degree holding temperature most bars keep all of their bottles. I guess I'm one of those freaks who actually like to taste their beer. I also appreciate the extra capacity of a pint so that there is room for a healthy head.

That is exactly why I like to be able to dump a 12oz. bottle into a (presumably) 16oz. pint glass. When I have to carefully and gently pour the ale into a "pint" glass and have it filled all the way to the rim, it is pretty easy to tell that there isn't room for the other four ounces that the glass should be able to contain. If the bar sells drafts by the pint, then they are being deceptive. If they advertise 12oz. drafts, then there's no problem at all in my mind.

I propose we give him 5/8ths a gallon of gas for the per-gallon price and see how he feels about accurate measurement then.
