My new microblogging service will be even more micro-y than Twitter. It will stop at 139 characters.

I'm going to launch a site with the biggest collection of emoticons ever in one place, where people don't even have to type--everything will be expressed in emoticons. It will evolve into a language of its own, as people try to express more and more complex ideas with a variety of emoticons.

Hand writing is passe, now actual words will become outdated, as everyone lives only through a profile photo and thousands of little pictures.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's been done, sad as it may seem. It's been ages, but I remember there being a site where you could select a one-word mood and an emoticon. There was a fixed URL that you (or friends) could use to keep track of each other's moods.

Pictographs is the early evolution of language... If we do what you suggest, it is de-evolution of communication.

as someone recently suckered into twittering, Im getting a kick out of these replies.

that being said, Im still not sure what the big deal is. Does anyone really want to know what I am doing right now? procrastinating, thats what. Im supposed to be writing a goddamned paper, but instead Im posting on fark, tweeting my snacks/coffee status and generally not writing my paper.

there...are you happy?

/anyone want to follow me? I feel like I tweet to myself.

Ermungslos: Paractical purpose? Do enlighten us.

I'm a sports blogger, and I found it tough to keep up with sharing thoughts and links with other sports bloggers. In turn, it was a good way of tracking their thoughts and links. A couple of other writers I admire were using it, so that sweetened the deal.

I don't read anybody's tweets that are menial, unimportant and interesting only to themselves and their cats. Or of SEO marketers. The majority of tweets are unimportant, yes, but the majority of e-mail is spam.

I also suggest that, like the Internet, it's all about finding your niche and your purpose in it. If it's not there, then good luck to you.

people at my company follow our customers on it, and if they ever see a complaint about our support, etc, they act on it. Customers are pretty surprised and happy when the learn about that.

But I'm still refusing to join for now.
