IMHO, if it launches and passes anywhere near/over Japan, then within 1 year, you will see an underwater nuke test in the Pacific.

It will be large enough to dispel any doubt as to who conducted it, and what technology it was.

Nobody will step forward immediately to claim responsibility.

It will be obvious it's not North Korea.

Anyone who thinks Japan doesn't posses the capacity to fairly quickly deploy a nuke weapon, possibly a thermonuclear one, of their own design, is kidding themselves.

I dunno, maybe Kim Jong Il is beginning to realize how monumentally stupid it would be to launch an ICBM, considering there are undoubtedly a couple of nuclear-equipped US subs sitting off their coastline.

If said ICBM starts to veer towards Japan or (Gods forbid) Alaska, Pyongyang will get wiped off the face of the Earth about two minutes later.

Crazy as he might be, I don't think the's that stupid, or even that suicidal.

Really? You think he'd let some megalomaniacal Elvis impersonator nuke the US without a fiery doom flavored response? I thought being willing to nuke people if it comes to that was part of the POTUS job description.

Yeah, the problem here is that you are completely incorrect. Have you paid ANY attention to his rhetoric on AfPak?

If you're looking for a coward, look for the people cowering in their homes, voting for Republicans and giving up their rights out of fear of Al Qaeda. Obama is not the pussy you think he is, you're just too retarded to understand that diplomacy is generally the best way to actually resolve problems.

Damn straight, and I don't blame them. Once W. bundled N. Korea and Iran along with Iraq in an "axis of evil" just before invading Iraq they knew their sovereignty was in jeopardy-- whether they posed a risk to the U.S. or not. A fleet of nuke-tipped ICBMs is just about the ONLY way to guarantee their national borders against attack from a world power that spends about as much on its military than the rest of the world combined.

Things are certainly looking up with Obama in office, but the American people were stupid enough to vote in an idiot like W. before and it just might do it again.

Am I OK with N. Korea and Iran obtaining nukes and ICBMs? No. But I think they have a damn legitimate reason for wanting to acquire them.

It's not just the Japanese, I imagine China probably isn't going to be too thrilled with the idea of another nuclear power near it's doorstep.

To be honest however the main reason North Korea probably wants a nuclear capability is as a deterrent. Recent US foreign policy has made nuclear weapons a requirement for true diplomatic relations, without them the threat of a military response is much more likely.

The US doesn't go to war with nuclear powers. If another country were to deploy a nuke you can bet the US certainly will at that point, but not before.

Does anybody really give a shiat about North Korea? Does the country contribute anything meaningful to the world whatsoever, other than being the butt of jokes?

Wouldn't the entire world be a lot better off if there wasn't an megalomaniacal Elvis impersonator with nuclear aspirations?

I understand that there are a lot of innocent people living in North Korea, but at this point that country is like a gangrenous limb that needs to be amputated to save the entire body.fark 'em. Glass parking lot FTW.

I think their neighbors might complain a bit about the fallout. And having countries randomly nuking people they don't like is a path to the end of all of us, so I'd prefer we didn't handle it that way.

From what I've been told, NK also basically has a gun to the head of a large portion of the population of SK. Seoul might not like getting pounded to rubble because we didn't feel like talking.

Otherwise that's an awesome plan.

Yeah, because diplomacy worked so well with the DPRK so far. Remember that 1994 Agreed Framework, the time when Madeline Albright went over to Pyongyang and treated Kim Jung Il like a respectable world leader? It failed, and the DPRK continued to develop their nuclear technology even before Bush came to office.

Odd how all those "cowards" who supposedly "gave up their rights" were so wrong, yet Obama is continuing those some policies. I guess once a guy you like is in the Oval Office, who cares about warantless surveillance, right?

For all Obama's rhetoric about Pakistan, everyone in the world with a firing brain cell knows that Obama does not have the guts to do more than lob a few cruise missiles there. (Not that we really can do much more.) Do you think that Obama would invade the Northwest Frontier of Pakistan to take out AQ? Because that's what it will take.

Diplomacy is worthless without the meaningful threat of force, and the reality of the matter is that Obama is not going to use the kind of force that would do much of anything. Nobody fears Obama, which means that nobody has any reason to do what he wants them to do. If North Korea launches that missile, what are the consequences? Another meaningless round of "sanctions"? So what, Kim Jung Il can get around those.

We have no teeth at the moment, and so any efforts at diplomacy are basically a joke.

Dwight_Yeast 2009-04-04 12:24:13 PM
aquaticphoenix: Does anybody really give a shiat about North Korea? Does the country contribute anything meaningful to the world whatsoever, other than being the butt of jokes?

It's an ongoing farking problem, like Cuba, a last vestige of something that more of less died two decades ago (Jeebus, has it really been 20 years since the Wall fell?).

The moment the "Communist" dictatorship of North Korea can be shifted out of power is the moment Seoul can take over the whole nation and start brgining the North out of the stone age.

Obama made it clear during the campaign that he'll have no problem sending special forces into Pakistan if needs be.
