'I accept responsibility. They were my men. I gave them orders in reaction to US drone attacks,' Mehsud told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.

For some reason I think the guy claiming responsibility may be full of shiat. Anyone else? Seems like a pretty half-assed attack on a low value target for an international terrorist organization trying to punish us for a war. These folks weren't even technically US citizens yet, poor farkers.

Oh yeah. Not to be a dick about it, but this is yet another tragedy that probably could have been avoided, or at least mitigated, by regular people carrying weapons. I'm sure the dead and their families are comforted that SWAT showed up in time to play hide and seek with a dead attacker.

Think they'd be anywhere close to the non-crossed fire casualties? The guy kicking the door in and pointing a gun at the people in your class is a pretty obvious target I'd think. Not all that much chance of confusing him with one of the cowering students, though there is the whole walls not stopping bullets all that well thing if it turned into a firing squad.

Oldiron_79 2009-04-04 10:12:48 AM
If you take a look at any of the famous lots of shots fired police shootouts like the North Hollywood shootout or the Miami shootout, they don't have any wheres near as many people hit by stray bullets as the school/church/mall massacre body counts.

So your "teh crossfire" argument is invalid.

At least the cops showed up for that one. All the police seem to do now is get to the scene, hide behind their cars, wait for the killer to kill everyone and then himself, and then the cops go in and point guns at the survivors.

Well, once the bad guy is done shooting everyone and themselves, the bad guy's family can't then sue the police for violating his civil rights. Duh.

At least that was obvious and spectacular. It seems like they're more apt to use explosives and multiple people in areas that will maximize their targets. One guy with a couple of handguns in an immigration class doesn't really bring "terrorists!" to mind, it makes me think that he may have failed the class and been especially pissed or had his citizenship app denied or something. Multiple guys in a mall with automatics or something I could believe, but this claim just sounds like opportunistic BS.

Huh? The World Trade Center was considered one of the biggest (if not the biggest) symbols of American commercialism and capitalism in the world, with hundreds of the most important businesses in the country were based there and they attempted to blow it up before. Are you really saying how it doesn't seem like international terrorists would strike there, but they would attack a small centre used by immigrants to learn English and study for the immigration test?

RobsterCraw [TotalFark] 2009-04-04 12:31:26 PM
Have two terrorist groups ever gotten into a pissing contest after both claimed responsibility for the same attack?

Its funny though. If all you're trying to do is terrorize people, you don't have to actually kill anyone, you just have to claim responsibility for all the tragic accidents and unsolved crimes that occur all the time. Its not like terrorism kills more people than car accidents, so why not just claim to be responsible for thinks like West Nile Virus, or Gilmore Girls. People aren't particularly terrified by accidents, but if you add the element of pernicious intent on the part of some evil and secret group then everybody fixates on it.

I bet that if whoever is re-dubbing over videos of the late Osama bin Laden were to make a new video claiming to have control of a satellite that orbits over the US that they will use to cause ordinary Americans with seemingly nothing wrong with them to abruptly kill themselves, it wouldn't be too long before you hear credulous bereaving mothers claim that thats what happened to their emo teenage son in order to rationalize the kid's suicide.

Tickle Mittens: You seem like the kind of guy who'd pee himself and not know what color the boathouse is.

Just from that? Interesting. I don't think it's possible to know until you get into a situation like that. I'm too broke to buy a gun right now anyway, so it's kind of a moot point.

Also, I usually try to go to the bathroom before class, so I don't know that I'd be able to pee myself during a classroom shooting even if I wanted to.

I sadly have no idea what color the boathouse is, because it's just as much a lie as the cake.

/Yeah, I cheated. Sue me.

Dictatorial_Flair: The guy kicking the door in and pointing a gun at the people in your class is a pretty obvious target I'd think. Not all that much chance of confusing him with one of the cowering students

But in your ideal scenario, everyone would have a gun, then everyone would be shooting, right? Except in the confusion of a firefight not everyone is aware of whats going on. Maybe student A is the bad guy who started shooting, but maybe in the confusion student B only sees C and D shooting, and so B shoots at C and D, even though they are only returning fire at A. during gunfire, confusion and panic are the rule, life imitating counter-strike is the exception.

Dictatorial_Flair 2009-04-04 01:47:10 PM
RobsterCraw: But in your ideal scenario, everyone would have a gun, then everyone would be shooting, right?

I didn't say everyone, where did I say that? Everyone packing heat wouldn't really be ideal at all, nor is it necessary. Though it would probably be a hell of a deterrent to all kinds of stuff. Lots of people can't really be trusted carrying guns around in public because they have no idea how to shoot or are too hotheaded or for a variety of other reasons. Many people also have no desire to own or even touch a gun and that's fine.

However, lots of places disallow all arms, regardless of the qualifications of the bearers, and thus make themselves and the people in them targets for stuff like this. There also seems to be an absurd stigma against citizens arming themselves for protection in large segments of our society. People seem to think the police are and should be the only answer to every crime or violence-related question. Hoplophobes demand that everyone around them be defenseless so they can feel the illusion of safety.

It would only take a handful or armed people in a given area, possibly even just one if they're lucky, to stop shooters like this guy dead in their tracks. Please stop putting words in my "mouth" and attempting to strawman me. kthxbye

That is a fantastic point. There is not one populous and Muslim ruled Asian country that I can think of. The level of knowledge that you base your points on does leave me in awe. Before I had always thought that not every Muslim was arab but your enlightenment has shown me the way. I find it fantastic that someone can be so sure of there point they do not need stupid stuff like facts or basis in reality.
