We've got to have some music for The New Frontier

Unsquare Dance is my favorite Brubeck song, it's minimal, fun, and goofy at the same time.

- Um, like my women?

I had no idea Dave Brubeck was still alive.

saw Dave live in Detroit at orchestra hall. the man was great. at the beginning of the second half of the show, he grabbed the mike and said "i'd tell you what we played in the first half, but you know what the songs were". truly an artist.

Vossie -

That is perhaps the best recorded version of that tune I've ever come across - the first two lines of Desmond's solo are just intentionally ridiculous - you could tell he was tired of playing it so his solos just got farther and farther out there for a while. Dave sort of looks over and has to just drop his head. He absolutely KILLS on this, some of the little lines he weaves in and out are unreal, even for him.

Starts off a little slow, but I haven't been able to get it out of my head for weeks now.

I hear you're mad about Bruuu-beck!
/and I thought I'd be the first one!

I didn't know the old man was still alive. A legend in his own time.

Paul Desmond's tone and articulation is pretty much far and away the best I have ever heard on a sax. Thanks for posting that 1966 video.

Live next to Dave Brubeck Park so I am getting a kick out of this ... etc... etc....etc...

Is Desmond alive?

I liked his work on the Berlin link but the song a tad fast to me.

Take Five was my very first jazz album. I recall seeing Al Hirt in concert, and everyone left the stage while the drummer did a solo of Take Five. Was absolutely weird. Great, but weird.

mfaby: Is Desmond alive?

Died in 1977 - three packs a day and a steady scotch habit will do that to you. Best quote ever - upon finding out he had lung cancer, he was more impressed that his liver passed all tests with flying colors "One of the great livers of our time - awash in Dewars and full of health."

Check out his "canadian" quartet from the mid 70s, especially "Paul Desmond Live!" from Toronto in 1975. Some of the best small group stuff you'll ever hear.

I downloaded the GuitarPro file of Blue Rondo à la Turk a couple days ago and started pickin' it apart. yeeesh! what a masterpiece.
If Brubeck only wrote that one tune He'd still be a super-composer to Me.

I gotta say, when I read that, I feared he'd passed on & my heart sank. Brubeck's one of my musical heroes. I know it's coming eventually, but still... sad to see the greats fade away.

Got to see him at Jacksonville University (random) once, a few years ago. The old man was goin plenty strong then; I hope he pulls through this. Brubeck was the 1st jazz artist that I ever heard that I got really into.
