As much as I farking HATE Metallica now (yes, mostly because of Napster and Lars), I do find this commercial (new window) slightly amusing.

sevon 2009-04-03 02:42:59 PM
I can't decide if the whole "I don't like Guitar Hero because I play the songs for real" is arrogance or honesty. Metallica's past make me want to lean in the more negative arrogant direction, but at the same time, I can kinda see why knowing it on a real guitar might mess up playing a game based on it. Iono.

And what's up with this picture of Hetfield in front of Armani the interviewer was talking about? Will no one post it?!

sevon: I can't decide if the whole "I don't like Guitar Hero because I play the songs for real" is arrogance or honesty.

I play guitar, and I can play guitar hero. It's two completely different things, and I think, deep down, those people who are like "I can't play this because I play REAL guitar" are just trying to excuse themselves because they never took the time to learn video games, so they try to act like the two are so similar that one messes the other up, which is completely not the case, and if you're confusing a guitar hero guitar for a real guitar while playing, you must not be very good at playing a real guitar either...

So the fact is, if you say something like that, you're either bad at guitar hero, or bad at both. The only thing that excuses you from being bad at the game is the fact that you're bad at the game, not because you have the ability to play a real guitar, which yes, is much harder to learn, and of course, not a game. I'll admit that I'm not that great at guitar hero, but I did beat the games on medium (the first three, anyway). I'm not saying I'm that great playing a real guitar either though, I like to let my music (or others) judge me on that (I'm no Eric Melvin on six string, and no Matt Freeman on four, that's for damn sure).

I'll also admit that I did buy the first three guitar hero games and play them. I mean, they were fun. But the thing that sucked about them is that they are too easy on Medium, and too hard on Hard or Difficult (it's been years) Plus, once you beat all the songs, it's just plain boring, so you need to keep buying all the new versions in order to stay entertained. I'd say, just give me a regular videogame, that's going to take some time to beat, and I'd be much better off, and feel much better about it when I finally get to the end.

How so?

Almost thirty years into their careers and they still sell out stadium shows. Up and coming bands dream of going on tour with them because they do. As far as heavy music, yeah they went radio for a few albums, but Death Magnetic holds it's own against their pre Black album stuff.

Love them or hate them for the whole Napster thing or "selling out", you can't say they aren't relevant.

Ummm... I think James Hetfield's cred is 100% established at playing the real guitar. He's just saying that he sucks at it, probably because he wants to play across the neck and not up it. Many of the songs do not have the same rhythm as the original (it gets better at hard/expert) and James has been playing extremely rhythmic guitar for 30 years.

You're probably on to something that he hasn't given it enough time to get used to it; a long-term pro might get frustrated quickly by failing at his own songs!

I really enjoyed this interview, by the way.

similar to dickkead's above post,

I can read music for playing the drum set. I have a sense of rhythm too. I sit down for Rock band and try to play the drum part. My big gripe is that I have no sense of the colored blocks flying at me. Is that a quarter note or a triplet? How log is this rest? I wish they had a method of blocks or notes or both. That would be more fun. I'd be better at rock band too.

Yeah, I understand that. I could probably mute my TV and play guitar hero rather well still, maybe even better than I could with the music playing, I don't know I've never tried it. I've never even thought of that. That would be merely a game of "click the damn color that comes down when it's in the circle" and then you probably wouldn't try to play to the music.

Man, I don't know. All I do know, is that guitar hero is a ripoff of two pretty good games, both which were played with a controller.

Player Haters,

So you've never taken your wives or girlfriends shopping? Do you think these guys sit in their Dethclock castle brooding and drinking mead all day?

I play a real guitar along with Rock Band and my son plays the drum controllers. This guy can't play with his kids?

Metallica does not deserve all this hate. Just don't buy (or download) their albums.

This is how I read it. I remember reading a blog by Kurt Novoselic, saying basically the same thing, that he failed miserably at Nirvana songs on Guitar Hero.

While I can see the point of the rest of your post, gotta disagree here. I play GH with my wife, and we play all the versions for the Wii. Maybe this speaks to my completionist nature with video games, or perhaps I'm just too easily entertained, but just "beating" the song isn't good enough.

I don't have the dexterity for real guitar, but I can do pretty good on Hard on Guitar Hero. I very rarely manage 100% on any song, so it's always a challenge to try to improve yourself. The music in the games is pretty solid and just playing it as a game can be really really fun, especially with another person to get into it and make fools of themselves with you.

So now I'm leaning more towards the truth side of my original statement. Kind of sounds like people who really can play aren't quite the target audience.

I'm not a guitar player, but I am a musician, and the one thing I noticed about the GH/Rockband games is that they were tougher for me, because I'm used to playing instinctively not reactively.
You develop the skill in music to play "ahead of the beat" so you get used to playing what you know should be there...the games are designed more to react in a split second to the colors and symbols on the screen...so that used to fark me up.

Fun games though. Screw the snobs that say otherwise.
