Acid is high risk/high reward.

When it's good, it's REALLY good. When it's bad, it's REALLY bad.

This new album's not really doing it for me for some reason.

I downloaded Mastodon's discography the other day.

I haven't listened to very much of it, but what I have heard has failed to impress.

I've never really liked mastadon but LSD is another story (mainly a love story)

Blood Mountain is probably the most accessable. Listen to it a few times (that's about what it took me) and you'll probably get into it. I love that CD now.

The new one hasn't really grabbed me yet either.

i'll give the album a try but they seem to get worse with every release. 'remission' was farking brilliant. i saw them opening for clutch on that tour, it was epic.

Same with zoomers. It's good to clean out the doubt and stress every now and then. Way better than Prozak.

I saw them open for Clutch in Houston. Clutch kicked all kinds of ass. Mastodon not so much.

Dewey Cox: "Let's do one more time. Okay, strings, lean into it. I want it real tangy this time. Now, Mike, you're flatting. Bushmen, make it sound like you're in the bleeping bush, okay? Alright, Fred, back off the goat on the second pre-chorus. I wanna hear his heart, not his soul. And, Sam, you go back to that thing you did yesterday on the bridge."
Sam: "That thing that sounded like velvet pancakes."
Dewey Cox: "Yeah, right."

The problem with being creative while on acid is that other people need to be really high to enjoy it.

Acid doesn't teach you anything other than what its like to be schizophrenic.

Seconded.

I always knew their guitarist was on something, he's ALWAYS doing crazy stuff when he hangs out at the Earl. I've heard their new album is awesome from friends here in Atlanta, but I've never really listened to all of their stuff.

Kodiak Attack 2009-04-03 02:26:17 PM
Yeah, I don't get the big Mastodon lovefest either - what I hear is a band that's borrowing heavily from their influences but not doing it as well as the bands they're influenced by.

/I'll just stick to Neurosis, thanks

Love Mastodon. Love acid. Love Crack the Skye. Oh well, no accounting for taste.

Got my tix for their show in Chicago this month.

Lumber Jack Off 2009-04-03 03:21:25 PM
there's an instrumental version of the new album that is a lot better than the regular version. I don't know if it's for sale or not, I snagged it off the interwebs.

/the vocals ruined it for me, but the instrumentation on the album is brilliant.

incircles 2009-04-03 03:22:40 PM
i wrote a couple of songs on lsd back in my college years. they were okay, neither better nor worse than the other stuff i've written. the lyrics were a bit more associative and cryptic, though.

Southern Atheist 2009-04-03 03:39:37 PM
Mastodon is one of the few newer metal bands, like Ozzfest second stage variety, I listen to. Blood Mountain and Leviathan were awesome, need to get my hands on Crack The Skye, maybe some acid too.

dstanley 2009-04-03 03:51:06 PM
That explains a lot.

I like Mastodon quite a bit, and think Crack the Skye may be their best yet - it really is good.

But, if you're looking for an even better band, Gojira > Mastodon, IMO.

My taste in Metal is clearly superior to yours and I spit in the general direction of your favotire band.

I like Mastodon, but Brent is a total asshole and is best avoided at shows. he also can't read.

Mastodon's vocals are my biggest complaint with them. I enjoy most of their music, but I think they're overrated in general.

Gojira is awesome. Seeing them on May 1st, can't wait. Seeing Mastodon next month, too (but I think I'm looking forward to Intronaut more at that show).

Have there been any studies to show a link between drugs and the quality of art? Because I am highly skeptical that drugs are the singular force behind all this.

I just started getting into them a few weeks ago thanks to a Sunday metal thread on Fark. I checked out their site the other day and saw they were playing my city next month! Ticket purchased.

I liked Leviathan, but I haven't heard anything since then, I've been meaning to check it out...

/\m/
//and a +1 for Neurosis, mentioned earlier in the thread

Your mileage may vary.

They don't make it like they used to.

CanadianCommie [TotalFark] 2009-04-03 08:01:25 PM
It's an excellent album. Huge departure from a lot of their earlier stuff, even Blood Mountain, but it still stands up well in its own right.

If you can get the deluxe version with the instrumental versions as well, it's pretty awesome. I did the same with Protest The Hero's last album (Fortress) and it's worth the extra couple bucks.

Foxxinnia 2009-04-03 08:46:18 PM
So remember kids, if you want to be cool like Mastodon, you have to take drugs.

davynelson 2009-04-03 11:42:21 PM
no it's not just the drugs
it's talent and industry and intelligence behind the music too.

psychedelic drugs fueled part of my first book and saved my life,
my best friend jailed for being the world's largest internet dealer of psychedelics.

Yes yes, I co-opted the psychedelic thread like a cheeze-eating teenager.

BUT ONLY BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, MAN!!

Clutch, Kuma's Corner, Chicago, IL, July 11, free. And free food.

These guys peaked at 'Leviathan'. The first half of Blood Mountain was awesome, the second half not so much. Crack the Skye is terrible in comparison. They just can't seem to write riffs anymore, and all-in-all, they've changed their sound far too much.

Compare any of the tracks on the new album to 'Aqua Dementia', 'March of the Fire Ants', 'Mother Puncher', or 'We Built This Come Death', and they just don't compare.

The worst part is, I've seen these guys play on every single tour they've done since the Lifesblood EP. And those were some killer farkin' shows, man. Best thing from here in Atlanta since Damnage and Nihilist back in the old days.

FrancisSawyer 2009-04-04 02:19:35 AM
Leviathan was the best. Bloodmountain is just meh and the new one is well....different. I'll give a few more tries but it isn't doing much for me so far.

//still have never seen them live

New album is their strongest. I love all their stuff and their sound has evolved. "The Czar" almost sounds like a heavy Pink Floyd track. Obviously not as "hardcore" as Remission but if you follow the band, you had to know this is the sound they've been working towards.

Awesome! I am jealous - I have their DVD "The Link Alive" (it's great!), but haven't seen them live yet....
