Can we all just agree that inhaling soot will never be a healthy thing, and let me continue smoking until that's made illegal, too?

brigid_fitch [TotalFark] 2009-04-03 10:49:24 AM
Jesus, you just slapped us with a $1 tax on them the other day. I'm in NJ--that puts them at $8/pack (or $6.75 if I drive over to PA). Enough with your stupid outrage over cigarettes--it's starting to sound like this century's Prohibition. Yes, smoking is decidedly bad for me, but it's my vice and I enjoy it. Now leave me the fark alone.

The bill would give the FDA wide-ranging control over tobacco products, including the elimination of harmful additives as well as candylike flavorings appealing to children women & minorities.

I refuse to support these drastic tobacco taxes for the sole reason that people use the same logic on my precious booze.

FTA: Tobacco giant Philip Morris is also behind the bill

I'm not sure why they would do that, but it sounds suspicious.

That's what I'm thinking. Rememeber they got sued because people assumed light cigarettes meant healthier cigarettes? Now they can point to the govt & say "Hey, they set the standards. Talk to them."

i've never been able to make it to day three while trying to quit. i read this book in one night and now its been almost half a year.

for the record, i hate anti-smoking nazis, so i'll just sneak out now and not say anything else.

They'll still find themselves as the strong arm of the federal government when it comes time to crack down on the illegal tobacco trade.

I wouldn't mind people who smoke if they didn't blow it in my face, smell terrible, act like dicks about smoking, or smoke everywhere.

If they'd just cut that out it'd be fine.

The best way to quit smoke is first to decide you *want* to.

Than wait until you wake up with a massive hang over combined with the flu.

That will get you thru the first 48 hours that are the hardest to cope with.

I just did that this week so I am getting a kick out of some of these replies. Flu and a cold = 5 days of no smoking without a second thought.

so if we get the cigs black market and they can't fund the health care what will they do next?

People always use this argument...but it really isn't even valid. Once a tax is created it does not go away. Once a program is based on a tax it will not go away simply because of the lack of funds provided by that particular tax...dollars from the rest of the budget will simply be moved over to make up for it.

I decided to quit smoking before the new taxes went in - $10 a pack was just ridiculous. It's more expensive to smoke than to eat in a given day, wtf!?

On the plus side it's a great motivator, I'm saving $300 a month which is a farking car payment.

Are you kidding? I always smoked more when I was hungover than if I was legit sober.

Dr Dreidel 2009-04-03 12:34:38 PM
Should have been done years ago - the FDA guarding tobacco, not the ATF. Food AND DRUG - that means tobacco (should mean teh alkohawlzzz, too, but I can wait), caffiene, "dietary supplements"/herbal remedies/patent medicines (which was the reason the FDA was created in the first place), marijuana...fark, anything stronger than Coca-Cola should at least be cursorily examined by the FDA; who would have to show cause why something should be banned.

And for the love of god, can we do something about all the drug commercials every 20 seconds? I don't need to be assaulted every commercial break by Levitra, Lipitor, Avodart, Requip, Celebrex (now with less "killing you"!!), Aricept, Propecia, Restasis, Mirapex, Abilify, Zoloft...

How else would drug companies take advantage of old people?

"Fixitol! The new drug that makes you feel 20 years younger!"

I never really felt like smoking with a pounding head ache and nausea. Each to his own I guess. I found that feeling awful masked quite a bit of withdraw symptoms.

And I was serious about my smoking. Chain smoked non-filters for the last 10 years or so.

It's a damn pity it was going to bankrupt me before it'd kill me. As I rather liked smoking. Year and a half now. I'm good.

I'll counter your lulz with, "they can ask their doctors to find medications that fit their symptoms." Example:
-Doc, I just can't seem to find the willpower to get out of bed. My social life is DOA, haven't been laid in a year; I don't find once-pleasurable activities engaging or exciting, and I haven't experienced a major tragedy recently. What do you think?
-Well, sounds like clinical depression. Have some Zoloft and don't kill yourself.

NOT:
-Hey, Doc, what can you tell me about Zoloft?
-Well, it treats clinical depression, which shows up as [symptoms here]. Also, Pfizer pays me in helicopters for each prescription I write. How does 5x/day sound?

THIS. I mean, all I want is a) to be able to watch The Office w/out a side order of erectile dysfunction, and b) not to ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER again have my 5 year old ask me what it is. (football game that time... they seem to be the worst about that sort of thing...)

AKA: Just don't be a pussy about quitting.

I smoked for over 10 years, then this December I went with my dad to MD Anderson for his checkups and, while waiting outside for our ride, I wanted a smoke.... and I actually felt bad about it. So then I decided to quit.

It's been over 3 months since.

Granted, I never became a heavy smoker, but it was still a bit irritating to not light up when driving home from work, or whatever. However, I believe that quitting tobacco is NOT as difficult an endeavor as some say it is.

McNip 2009-04-03 01:32:01 PM
I'm an ex-cigarette smoker and a current cigar smoker.

I'm on the fence if this is a good move or not. Certainly the government has no business sticking it's nose into tobacco or marijuana in it's natural form, but cigarette companies put so many chemicals in their product that maybe it is time for the FDA to step in.

But at the same time I wonder how the anti-smoking nazis are going to abuse this power and push their agenda.

tweekster 2009-04-03 01:34:29 PM
McNip: But at the same time I wonder how the anti-smoking nazis are going to abuse this power and push their agenda.

I am in the same boat as you with cigars and cigarettes. And this is the only problem I have with moves like this. If it is treated like any other substance the FDA regulates then fine, but I really doubt that a certain agenda will not be pushed.

I'm fine with you smoking, so long as you start putting away money for you long term care and treatment NOW. I have no interesting in paying for your lung cancer treatments, and I see no reason I should have to (though higher premiums all-round) because you have been warned.

Someday, self-righteous anti-smokers, there is going to be a black market for tobacco when it becomes prohibited.

And, your insurance premiums will STILL go up as a result of people being treated for it.

Think about it.

If you think simply because they can't outright ban it that it means it won't be able to affect it, you might want to try facing a few facts yourself, you seem entirely devoid of them.

i thought that's why i pay all those taxes on my smokes. to pay for my healthcare later. you mean that the extra money i'm paying on cigs is being spent on something unrelated to cigs? color me completely shocked.
