Number 50 is Michael Knight.

I'll be honest, I was surprised to not see Delores O'Riordan. I haven't made up my mind as to whether or not she should be on the list, but I'm leaning toward a spot in the high 40's.

As much as I love U2, I'd have likely put Oppenheimer and Snow Patrol ahead of them, given No Line on the Horizon. NLOTH hasn't hooked me yet - but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and hoping the songs will be great live.

Give Magnificent another listen. That seems to be the track that grabs most people.

Should have been 'fookin,' subby.

FitzShivering 2009-04-03 09:05:40 AM
I'm relying on you Farkers to let me know which of these bands don't suck. The last time a top music list was posted here, I sampled all of the bands and wanted to claw my ears off.

the eidolon 2009-04-03 09:12:48 AM
Ash, David Holmes, Snow Patrol, and God is an Astronaut are the only ones I'd recommend.

Very excited to see The Divine Comedy so high on the list. Neil Hannon is amazing!

No Primordial?

What a list o' fail.

Do all of these Irish bands know that one song? The song that's about drinking, where everyone in the bar kind of swings their glass and slurs along? You know, the repetitious one!

Chindit [TotalFark] 2009-04-03 09:53:44 AM
No Irish Rovers? What? they aren't Irish? damn.

bbernardini 2009-04-03 09:53:54 AM
This list doesn't have The Saw Doctors on it. Therefore, it is stupid.

/STUPID, I say.

echocamp 2009-04-03 09:55:15 AM
hmmm, well the lead singer is Irish but the band was formed in L.A. so I guess I can forgive them for leaving off Flogging Molly.

2CountyFairs 2009-04-03 09:58:34 AM
Alright, I need to expand my horizons a bit. Obviously, I've heard U2, but after that, nothing. Well, possibly Snow Patrol. Sounds familiar, but I can't think of a single song.

FarFarAway 2009-04-03 10:00:38 AM
I understand why there's no Flogging Molly on the list. But that's still a shame. Great music, and awesome live shows. Have to say that their latest album didn't do much for me though. Love all of their other stuff.

Maybe they could do a list of top Irish influenced acts?

The Missing Link 2009-04-03 10:01:08 AM
The Chieftans should always be included on any list of Irish musicians!

SwingAwayMarell 2009-04-03 10:02:18 AM
U2 at #18... Edgy

Barton Fink 2009-04-03 10:02:46 AM
I live in Dublin and have only heard of 6 or 7 on that list.

I asked my friend from Dublin if he had heard of them when he moved here and he hadn't. I assume they are just much more popular over here. I am sure they have some fans but I just don't think that style does as well over there.

bcroz 2009-04-03 10:11:49 AM
wtf...No Mary Black. List fails!

Zmog [TotalFark] 2009-04-03 10:16:23 AM
I don't know who they are, but Fight Like Apes must be in the top ten list of awesomest band names evar.

Roblmw241 2009-04-03 10:16:38 AM
List fails for absence of Stiff Little Fingers.

EchoMike [TotalFark] 2009-04-03 10:27:48 AM
And before anybody gets bent out of shape because non-Irish bands that play Irish music aren't listed, keep in mind that this is just a list of Irish bands.

Otherwise, Flogging Molly would definitely be on there.

These guys should be too:

Makes me happy to see Colm Mac Con Iomare on the list separate from The Frames/Swell Season/etc. The Hare's Corner is an amazing disc.

Makes me squee like I did at TSS's show last year that they get higher ranks than U2.

/these are the people from the movie Once, if you were wondering
//go rent the movie if you haven't.

Dubliners?
Pogues?
Flogging Molly?

If you read other peoples comments, apparently there's a good argument against Flogging Molly. Was wondering about that myself until I read the thread.

What about Dropkick Murphys, through?

Luka Bloom?

Satanic_Hamster:

Drop Kick are all from Boston it has to be an Irish band from Ireland which knocks out some but it also says on the site they have to have an album out now, which The Dubliners do.

Same for the Corrs. Always thought they sounded like Wilson Phillips meets U2. Popish, but in a good sort of way.

Same here, except for the addition of Roisin Murphy.

She's good at what she does, sort of an ethereal/dance/techno combination.

Dave King is Irish, but no one else in the band is, though he and Bridget Regan (his wife) live in Ireland part time.

I had the bit of luck where I got to see Billy Bragg Play in Dublin. His shows in the US (NYC) tends to have him making jokes about us and the NPR listening self-hating Americans laughed along with Pohm (and this was during the Clinton years). He would make fun of everything, mom, baseball and apple pie.

In Dublin he started his stage banter making fun of a few manufactured Pop groups,(the Irish version spice girls and the like) and the audience laughed along. Then he started to talk about the Corrs, I have never seen an audience turn so quickly. It went from laughing, friendship and love to kill the sh*thead in a space of three words. Billy stopped talking and started into the next song.

Irish music is all unlistenable shiat.

Clash City Farker: Go tell the Pogues they are not Irish enough for this list.

/NO U!

Tried seeing the pougues once in NY. Got there late and it looked like there was a riot in the club, and there were no Pogues. When I asked what happened someone said that the place was empty when the Pogues got on stage and the Pogues got angry and started to smash things.

I would not want to tell the Pogues they are not Irish enough for this list.

Flogging Molly is better then 3/4 of those acts and 90% Irish.

deevo 2009-04-03 12:32:47 PM
does Clann Zu not count because their partially Australian, or what?

FeedTheCollapse 2009-04-03 12:33:34 PM
I find it odd how many people are suggesting Irish-American acts as Best Irish Band. Kind of on par with nominating Pearl Jam as Best Irish Band. But I'm also under the belief that "descended from Irish" does not equal "Irish". That, and "Bagpipes + punk = awful"

/was going to nominate My Bloody Valentine except that they're half British.

SPna15 2009-04-03 12:35:37 PM
I know the list says best acts right now, but in my mind, this is the only Irish band that really matters:
