I am only recently starting to decipher most of the Stones lyrics now that I'm learning to play their music from chord charts.

I downloaded a bunch of European vinyl rips and compared them to the '94 CD remasters... the remasters suck. Are we to assume this will be the same?

What a great studio band. If only they didn't suck so bad live.

Billy Preston played organ on Sticky Fingers.

I've got the original with the zipper. Wonder if it's worth much.

Let it Bleed is owned by ABKCO, not the Stones, so good luck with that.

By the way, why is there so much love for Exile?
I found it pedantic at best and NOT one of their best albums??

When i first listened to "exile..." i thought it was ok... but after a few listens, especially from beginning to end, i have to say that it's mostly stellar and inspired with only a few clunkers.
the acoustic set [1st LP, second side? i have the cd] is wonderful.
about a bazillion times better than the acoustic/folk stuff on "beggar's Banquet" [am i the only rolling stones fan here, or anywhere, that thinks "B.B." is not a good album, besides "sympathy" and "jumping jack flash", which are great?
because the rest of it does absolutely nothing for me.
[i think "let it bleed" is only a bit better...]

i still freakin love "sticky fingers" though...
i think their best one i've heard so far is a toss up between "sticky" and "exile".

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-04-02 03:52:25 PM
wait, no question mark after "great" on the fifth line.
whoops.

Remastering is just admitting that they farked it up the last time. Naturally, they'll fark it up this time too so they can try to sell you another copy five years from now.

What I came here to say. Do it right (like they did for the Doors; most recent...love them or hate them, the new remasters are excellent) and don't fark it up (I'm lookin' at you, Led Zeppelin...).

Don't overcompress and "brick" these recordings. I'm warning you...

I'll assume you mean Street Fighting Man since JJF doesn't appear on the album and nobody can dislike SFM. It's one of my lesser played albums.

[i think "let it bleed" is only a bit better...]

YOU. DEAD. RETARDED. ETC.

Most of those remaster choices are attrocious though. Maybe the Stones would be better off going the Disney Vault treatment instead. Remastering an album from 2006?

rickythepenguin [TotalFark] 2009-04-02 04:41:30 PM
shiatty Rock Music Critic Lesson:

1) NEVER refer to this album by its full title. Always "Exile".

2) Whenever Mick / Keith do anything musically, say "reminiscent of 'Exile'."

3) Whenever the Stones do anything musically, say "easily their best work since 'Exile'."

Those words do not spell Dark Side of the Moon or any form of title, informal or not, of the fourth Led Zeppelin album....

\if they weren't popular, they wouldn't have been on EVERY ROCK STATION ON EARTH sometime in the past forty years
\\not saying the stones aren't good, but i will point out that they have twenty nine albums and barely two bona fide "hits" per album....

organizm 2009-04-02 04:54:20 PM
I think that Exile is definatley one of the greatest rock albums of all time. It takes a lot of effort to rip of black American blues singers and pull it off that well (and I do mean that as a compliment)

I decide what albums are the "best" by what I find myself going back and listening to the most over the course of many years. Right? I mean, music is subjective, and it really just comes down to you like to listen to.

And for me, albums like OK Computer, Pet Sounds, and Exile on Main St just never ever get old.

Yeah, jeez, an album's only good if it has some "hits" on it.

Either way around, Beggars to Exile is a winning streak all others should be measured against. It's just insane that a band could do four albums that great in a row, and Ya Yas too.

And the albums after that are good, just spotty. Until Some Girls, which is great. The last great Stones album.

I bought "Exile on Main Street" and "Let it Bleed" back in...geez, 1998 (I was senior in high school and a late music bloomer); the fourth and fifth CDs I'd ever purchased. My dad sees what I get and shakes his head.
The next day, he brings me "Some Girls" on CD. "You'll want this in your collection."
And he was right.

/he still has the original vinyl
//and a copy of "The White Album"

Side one

1. "Sympathy for the Devil" - 6:27
2. "No Expectations" - 4:02
3. "Dear Doctor" - 3:26
4. "Parachute Woman" - 2:23
5. "Jigsaw Puzzle" - 6:17

Side two

1. "Street Fighting Man" - 3:18
2. "Prodigal Son" (Rev. Robert Wilkins) - 2:55
3. "Stray Cat Blues" - 4:40
4. "Factory Girl" - 2:12
5. "Salt of the Earth" - 4:51

I'm pretty fond of most of that, though I don't, for an instant, number myself as a "Stones fan".

Well, most vinyl rips on those levels are usually 24/96 which could certainly sound a hell of a lot better than plain old 16/44, especially if the ripper was using proper gear.

AdolfOliverPanties [TotalFark] 2009-04-02 06:08:13 PM
What the hell was wrong with Mick Taylor? How do you leave the Stones over "creative differences?"

You were in the Stones, man! No one ever heard of your ass before or since. Some people say "he did so much coke his septum was destroyed. He was kicked out."

Not buying it. No one could ever get kicked out of the Stones for being too much of a druggy.

And I also had vinyl of Sticky Fingers with the zipper. Note to collectors: Put that record in the FRONT of your collection. The zipper will fark up the back of any album that rests against or on top of it.

Mick Taylor left because he was tired of not getting
any songwriting credit and having to put up with a drugged-out Keef

Here is the Jumpin jack flash connection;
In March, the band began recording their new album, aiming for a July release. One of the first tracks cut, "Jumpin' Jack Flash", was released as a single only in May 1968, becoming a major hit.

Pretty amazing that it didn't make the album.

zcronix 2009-04-02 06:19:30 PM
All of the Stones' ABKCO albums (pre-Sticky Fingers) went through top-notch digital remastering and were re-released 5 or 6 years ago. They sound fantastic, except for some of the earlier albums where the source material didn't sound great to begin with. That group includes "Beggars Banquet", "Let It Bleed", etc. So for those of you wishing for a remastered version of either of those, you could just go buy it.

I own the hybrid SACD version of the two I mentioned as well as "Their Satanic Majesties Request" and "Hot Rocks" (plus an SACD player to get any possible higher quality). Comparing the 1994 CD version I have of "Hot Rocks" to the SACD remaster is like night and day.

Regarding the albums from the article, I have a supposedly non-remastered copy of "Exile On Main Street" from 2003 and it sounds quite good. I think that Virgin Records must have done a better job the first time around on CD.

Well, you can't very well have a Glimmer Triplets, can you? As for the drugs, he was a coke fiend. Keef was too loaded? What a pussy. Jagger, Bill and Charlie could handle it.
