I think we can safely go from saying "greedy white people are the problem" to "greedy people are the problem."

SOMEONE ALERT THE PRESS, PEOPLE ARE MAKING 125K A YEAR IN A MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREA!!! ZOMG THE HORRORS!

/wake me when they are making 500k EACH.

How low of a salary are we allowed to be outraged about?

what_now [TotalFark] 2009-04-02 01:57:51 PM
1). The Boston Herald is a terrible rag, and they've been milking this story because the people who read it don't make and will never make $110-$190k a year (not class warfare, just....truth)

2). Deval Patrick is the politician who's disappointed me the most in my life. He has literally done nothing in the two years he's been Governor. He came in on a wave of anti-Romney sentiment, with this happy "Together We Can" bullshiat, and together we've done nothing.

Hmmm, not really that much money. If these are supposed to be payback for political favors, they must not have been that useful.

Is there any evidence that these are "cushy" jobs?

Most of these positions look like PR positions. Do those jobs really warrant 125-190k. And more importantly, why is the call to fill the jobs not an open call, but seems to be filled with people connected closely to the Governor. If you don't see a problem in this.. well..

Gwendolyn [TotalFark] 2009-04-02 02:17:47 PM
Edwin Carr, former chief of staff at the economic development department, as the $110,000-a-year executive director at the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment.

Chuck Anderson, who served as Patrick's policy director, as a $95,000-a-year senior adviser with the Massachusetts Technology Collaboration.

So a senior tech adviser making $95k and director of trade making $110,000. OH THE HORRORS OF PAYING PEOPLE MARKET RATE.

I'd say that the positions are probably paid market rate. I am however, concerned about the nepotism that got them filled.

Are you concerned that some of the market-rate positions are completely made up?

You do know that there is another paper, The Boston Globe, that has covered the story about 12-15 times in the last week/week and a half, with a similar analysis, right?

It's even on the television news up here in NH. Imagine that!

Sorry, let me amend that by saying I am referring to coverage of Marion Walsh's previously-unfilled-for-12-years position.

And I understand you if you are talking about the other positions as well, I have not read up on those as much yet.

Oh yes. That's bullshiat and shenanigans. The guy is a *giant* disappointment, and will probably lead to another Republican governor in 2010.

I was referring to the guy who got a job making $190k for a position they just made up working on Clean Energy. I think that's a worthwhile position, I just am not happy about how THIS guy got it.

Yes, for the Clean Energy guy, that position was created by the legislature anyway.

are you referring to President Obama? Because he's done more in the three months he's been in office than Patrick's done in 2 years.

No matter how partisan you are, or how much you hate Obama, there is just no comparison between the two.

I'd be fine with that, Weld was fine, Cellucci was fine, Swift was not so fine, Romney sucked. 2 out of 4 ain't terrible.

/I think Kerry Healey would have REALLY sucked, and Mihos is a bloviating douchebag soooooo....

Both were schooled in Chicago politics, got into office on a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment, used very similar catch phrases (together we can and yes we can ). Obama actually quoted from Deval's speeches during his campaign. The jury is still out on Obama, Deval not so much.

Oh I agree. I also had no use for the other Democrat running...I forget his name off hand, but his platform was basically, "it's my turn".

I'd be happy w/ a typical New England Republican (the ones you mentioned, Snowe, Collins, Chafee), but Mittens was an unmitigated disaster, so he'd have to prove to me that he wasn't using the Commonwealth as a stepping stone.

If these people were qualified by their own merit alone, I have no issue with the placements. However, if their experiences do not have a leg to stand on it is cronyism of the worst kind, and everyone involved deserves the standaard media tar and feathering.

I looked it up, the other Dems in the primary were Chris Gabrieli and Thomas Reilly. I still wouldn't vote for Reilly, but I'd certainly give Gabrieli another look if the primary were held today.
