It's amazing to me to think that at one time Dodd and Edwards were serious contenders for the Democratic nomination for Prez. And I kinda liked Dodd in the earlier days of the campaign.

And Edwards made the final three while the mistress thing was already well underway. Had he been elected and that came out? Clinton would start looking like a saint.

It's pure hubris.

Meh, I think Dodd is a putz, but this doesn't seem bad at all. Mainly because:

According to the invitation, the event will be hosted by Paulson, whose hedge fund scored a $15 billion payday when it bet against the subprime housing market in 2007. Paulson's personal take from that bet was estimated to be between $3 and $4 billion..

So the smart guy who predicted the market correctly, we should shun him why, exactly?

There might be an angle I'm not getting, here.

At this point, if you're not categorically voting against the incumbent except in notable exceptions of incredibly high competency, you're doing it wrong.

No member of a committee, let alone the chairman, should be allowed to accept money from the people he oversees. This has gone way past ludicrous speed.

Well, my feeling is that either money is free speech, or it isn't. I, personally, feel that money should not be treated as speech-- but that doesn't matter. The current state of things is that money, with restrictions, is treated as speech.

To me, there is therefore little difference in Dodd meeting with this guy, or accepting him as a fundraiser. Either way, under our current system, he's listening to his speech.

Now, if Dodd was getting sweet-ass plane trips from the guy, or work done on his house, or anything like that that falls outside the realm of what's accepted and legal, I'd be all over him. But this form of speech-- campaign fundraising-- is completely legitimate in our system.

And in terms of associating with or listening to hedge fund managers in crafting regulation-- as long as they're not invited to actually draft portions of the bill, they deserve to be able to plead their case just as much as anyone else does.

In the market, betting against something generally inspires over people to bet against it, then that makes the price lower, making the prediction come true. It's how hedge fund managers make money when they need it, and it doesn't seem like it's good for anyone but them.

Actually, thats not true. I'm sure that recently hedge fund managers couldn't have driven down the price of a thing with the irrational beliefs people had in the continuing growth of the market. They aren't evil or bad, he just saw it coming and made money off of it. In America, that's the way it works.

well, assuming that this guy isn't a corrupt douchebag for the sake of argument (though i don't know that), the problem wouldn't be one of substance, but one of image.

So... Paulson predicts that the subprime market will collapse, so people stop paying their mortgages?

"Honey, would you look at this? Some hedge fund manager thinks we won't pay our mortgage!"

"We'll show him! Let's stop paying!"

"Ah, jolly good. I haven't had a good eviction since '72."

I have. I am sick and tired of politicians being used by these f*ckers. It is exactly this kind of situation that leads to the industry creating the very legislation that "regulates" them. This has to stop. It has nothing to do with Politico. It has everything to do with people having unfair access and influence on the people who oversee them.

It's a combination of things. Dodd, is a very douchetastic Senator. Ask his constituents.

I don't get it. I'm no Dodd fan but we're talking about a hedge fund manager who called the sub-prime mortgage bust correctly and-

"Paulson has been an active participant in the debate over hedge fund regulation, arguing that his industry needs new government regulation."

So, there's Politico's first beef. And as to the second one, as other people have said- when did Jews stop being minorities?!? If this was an all-black club would the story be the same?

That being said, when the right pretty much manufactures shiat out of thin air and harps on it with no evidence over and over, you do y ourself no favors. There is ZERO evidence that there is anything illegal about the cottage, what he paid, how he reports it, ect.

The entire bullshiat stroy is the fabrication of an ex-Republican idiot writting "editorials" in a newspaper. No facts, no sources, nothing. It may sound "truthy", but there is nothing illegal to it. At all.

It's ACORN, flag pins, birth cerificates, secret Marxist Muslims, ect. It's the same kind of WARGRBBBL.

True, as far I can tell nothing was illegal. I should have said that his dealings were unethical to say the least, which is why The Senate Ethics Committee has been looking into his dealings.

No. The ethics committee is not looking at the cottage at all. ONE asshole at the Hartford Courant, Kevin Rennie, has made up a shiatload of baseless bullshiat that the right, as is there way, has picked up as factual and fed to the sheep, which, as you prove, have dutifully picked it up too, reality be damned.

Christ on the cross are you people pathetic. Again, Dodd should be an easy mark for some REAL corruption and this is what you pull out? Classic.

Again, the cottage? Legal and ethical. Nothing there.
