What was her gift, again? A picture of herself?

Oh, right, nobody is complaining, except the whiny little pricks with sand in their urethrae. Shut up.

I think he should have brought her the traditional gifts from colonial dignitaries: Tobacco, gold and an aborigine. Would that have made submitter happy?

I really would like to know why it's a bad gift to give an iPod w/ your pictures/speeches on it (i.e. stuff that can be erased) but it's not a worse gift to give a huge framed painting of yourself (that has no real artistic value besides straight portraiture).

It's because she's a nice old lady and he's an arrogant elitist. The sentiment behind the gift matters more than the gift itself.

She's a nice old lady? Are you serious?

She's a figure-head monarch, who is in charge of a family that burns millions of dollars on pure extravagance because they were born or married into it.

The ego to give a painting of yourself because you're queen is far worse.

It wouldn't have been so bad if the Queen didn't already have two iPods. Say what you want about the man's politics, but these people are shiatty gifters. And Michelle, dear, touching the Queen is a no-no. If you can't learn proper protocol on these things, stay home and tend the organic garden.

Tatsuma [TotalFark] 2009-04-02 08:13:39 AM
I was called a racist in the other thread for saying that an iPod (or the dvd collection), especially considering she already had two, was a rubbish and thoughtless gift to give to a foreign dignitary, so I want to make it clear that I am NOT a racist:

Most of my friends own dvds and iPods. There. Not racist.

It was signed. I think it would have been funny if she'd given him a copy of the 1766 Stamp Act.

The Obama got a signed picture of the queen and her squeeze.

I'd take the iPod.

The Queen doesn't seem to have minded:

It is reported that the Queen was so taken by Mrs Obama she even said: "Now we've met, will you please keep in touch?"

Obama should take this and run with it, try to find the crappiest gifts possible and give them out to the leaders of all the countries. like dollar store snow globe crappy...

Portrait = sentimental gift that will last for a very long time.

iPod = thoughtless and juvenile gift that will become obsolete in a very short time.

Tatsuma [TotalFark] 2009-04-02 09:17:31 AM
I have to admit, I'd like to drop my trousers to the Queen, every sensible child will know what this means...

As someone who once gave her brother a jar of expired marshmallow fluff as a Christmas present, I totally approve of Obama's gifting policies.

I hope the iPod had some Katy Perry on it, from Michelle, to let Her Royal Highness know what was meant by that bit of touch...

I'm glad this is the tripe the wingnuts are concentrating on. It means Obama must be doing pretty well in the areas that actually make a difference.

Somehow the picture is lame (which it is), but the ipod is original and thoughtful.

Recap:

Gordon Brown gives the following awesome gift:

And the Queen tops it by giving Obama one of these:

And we're supposed to think that whatever Obama gave them is somehow worse?

chipspastic: I'm glad this is the tripe the wingnuts are concentrating on. It means Obama must be doing pretty well in the areas that actually make a difference.

This.

I said it in the other thread. There are far more important things to worry about, such as foreign policy and the economy, but republicans seem to be focusing on little things like an iPod.

Q: What does the Queen take with her everywhere in case she wants to hear music she likes?
A: The Band of her Majesties Royal Grenadier Guards.

Well, he was considering putting his speeches on tape, and stuffing the photos in an envelope, but then he remembered what decade it was.

The iPod is a self-playing CD. It's arguably more appropriate to give an iPod with said media than a mere jumpdrive.

I can't imagine how THAT nightmare would go over. Then again, we'd probably all ignore that, just like if he gave her a rare piece of Americana that holds a very, very special place in the Queen's heart. Hammerstein isn't nearly as buzzworthy as an iPod.

I was wondering how I missed all the "Bush gives gift to blah blah" talk over the last administration so i go to google news. None of the stories were about Bush presenting anyone with a gift. I couldn't find one. (Hopefully someone can?) But the funny thing is most were of the sort "Bush gives gift to Tanzania, Millions to fight disease" or "GOP gives gift to Drug companies."

Doak 2009-04-02 09:38:29 AM
Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude: Somehow the picture is lame (which it is), but the ipod is original and thoughtful.

I'm not sure that's the argument. The most on that extreme I've seen is "the portrait is useless while the ipod has utility."

I really don't see what the big deal is either way. "Oh noes, Michelle Obama broke useless royal protocol and treated the Queen of England like she was just another human being" (which she is). I mean we're Americans for God's sake. We don't have royalty. One of the great principles our country was founded on was that we wouldn't be judged based on titles but on our abilities (or, at first, how much land we happend to own, and whether they had a penis made of white skin, but I digress). It's only fitting that the wife of the head of the American state would screw up some petty rule like this.

"Oh no, Obama gave the Queen of England something that she already had, when the Queen went and gave the Obama's something that can easily be found on the internet! How dare they!" Sure, was it a crappy gift? Maybe. It was an ok gift. But she's the Queen of England! She has absolutely no influence over policy. What's she going to do, release the hounds on America? Is she going to go to the press and issue a statement saying "We are not amused by this ipod gift"? It's really inconsequential bullshiat.
