Oh, my achin' head.

Is this tool honestly so damn short-sighted that he's letting his own ego and petulant animosity towards Al hamstring the entire state, and by extension, the entire country? Even if he were to pull out a "victory" by some grand miracle, does he REALLY not understand that people have long memories? That they'd remember his obstructionist tantrum-throwing and naked, shameless hypocrisy once election time rolls around again? What a f*cking moron, seriously. He's making us all look like idiots up here.

I really wish there were some provision in place that would just allow Amy Klobuchar to vote twice for as long as this drags on, just to rub it his stupid, plastic-toothed face just how futile his whining is. I am seriously about two days away from burning some vacation time to go and stand on his lawn with a big sign that says, "HEY, NORM...REMEMBER "THE HEALING?" LET IT BEGIN, YOU UNBELIEVABLE SCHMUCK."

But... I thought Republicans were the party of financial responsibility?

This is costing Minnesota millions of dollars, and the judges and lawyers and clerks all dealing with it are being kept from handling things like, oh, criminals.

It isn't ego. It is hardball politics. It is big stakes politics.

Every day that Franken is not in the Senate voting with the Democrats makes it just that much easier for them to have an effect on the agenda.

Coleman and his team knows he is never going to win, and have known it for a long time.

Are they really that stupid? The Dems have a large enough majority that one congressman isn't going to make an effective difference.

All this will do is ensure that Coleman isn't re-elected because (hopefully) Minnesotans will see how stupid this is.

I am shocked that the Republican party would spend millions of dollars to deny MN its elected senator for as many months as possible since the election didn't go their way. Shocked.

Of course, if Franken is now calling for Coleman to just give it up already, he's a hypocrite too.

Not really. Republicans and Democrats alike agree that Coleman's complaint is meritless. His own lawyer admits that Coleman can't win. We've now been through the entire recount process, overseen by people politically sympathetic to Coleman, and all that's happened is that Franken has picked up more votes. The argument is not "no recount versus indefinite recount." The argument is "Full and complete recount versus indefinite recount."

The Senate is the States' house (recall that, before Wilson, Senators were appointed by state legislatures, not by popular vote). The governor (the state's highest executive official) must certify the election in order for the candidate to be seated. In Roland Burris' case, the Senate was trying to block him from being seated (i.e. the state had discharged its electoral duty, but the federal house wasn't playing by the rules); but here, it is solely the state's issue (since it's a state-wide election at issue).

How does this become an issue for the federal courts?

Bob16 2009-04-01 11:19:54 AM
Yeah this makes the cons look real good.

Smart move.

Of course you'll get a few of the hard right nuts that think this is just fine but they aren't a barometer for what ordinary voters think.

After all they thought Bush was a great prez.

Hoseroonyoony 2009-04-01 11:21:45 AM
This is only about preventing the Dems from having a 59th vote in the Senate, which puts them 1 vote from a filibuster proof majority. Principles of representation of the people of MN be damned, this is about politics. Shenanigans like this should help the Dems keep making the case for retaining power.

I predict that this will not bode well for ANY Minnesota Republican in 2010, and may even hurt them nationwide. Perhaps the crazy rural areas won't be affected, but this kind of thing has a habit of coming back and biting certain parties. Especially after the example of Gore and Kerry conceding when they had a better case than Coleman. Minnesota at least will never, EVER, give Coleman another chance at anything after he is finally smacked down.

This reminds me of the Terri Schivo case. While that alone did not help the Democrats win in 2006, it was one of the nails in the coffin and, at the very least, was when the pendulum began swinging the other way.

I don't know: The Supreme Court handed Bush the presidency and nobody seems to give a sh*t about that, so I guess Coleman is using a "tried and true" strategy.

It's a huge difference. IIRC, they now need to bring over 3 Republicans to overcome a filibuster. To use one example, that 3d Republican (not remember who it was) who they got to vote for the stimulus package did so at a considerable price. With Franken in office the Dems could have passed a different bill.

Not entirely true. Coleman's argument isn't that he won with current standards, it's that the standards for ballot certification were different from locality to locality. He's asking for uniform standards to be applied to every voting district. This does have a possibility of changing vote outcomes. It's a valid legal challenge and Minnesota law states that the election can't be certified till all legal avenues have been exhausted.

Seeing that the recount process was overseen by both Coleman's and Al Franken's camps, I failed to see how this applied. The biatching on this issue should have come before the recount started, not after.

Guess what buddy, just because you live north of the mason dixon line, that doesn't make you inherently better or smarter or really anything. But painting a broad swath of your own fellow countrymen as inferior or stupid because of the geographic location in which they live does make you an arrogant jackass. So wear that with pride.
