Prince gives guitar video

There's no question that Prince walks over to the audience after playing and appeared to give the guitar to the audience member.
There's no possibility that it was a "hold this for a second, will you?" moment.

I think Prince should give the guy the guitar.

I hope the person who took it away was just another audience member who was thinking fast.

/didn't know Prince's last name was Indian

This. I'm sure Prince can afford plenty more strats.

What a jerk.

He probably had that all set up--"I'll give him the guitar, then you take it back when the camera's on Leno. That way, I'll look all cool, but I won't lose a guitar. Win-win."

Basketball.

I get the feeling it was part of the stage act. It's difficult to see, but it looks like the guitar's wireless is still plugged in and that goofy rotovibed feedback note is still sounding, even as Prince hands over the guitar and the dude handled it. That should have sounded more notes and noise, which screams lipsync.

But yeah, taking the guitar back was a douche move. The TMZ nerd should have put up more of a fight.

Pretty standard stuff. Though, Prince should have given him something in return for the guitar. I was at a show where the singer ripped the big crash symbol off the drum set and threw it into the crowd. They came for the dude who had it latter and got it back, but gave him a bunch of signed swag.

On the other hand, I know a guy who saw Green Day and the lead guy just gave him a guitar. Pretty sweet.

Dick move, bottom line. He has the money.

Apparently Prince does this at a lot of his concerts, gives someone in the crowd his guitar for a few moments then has a handler take it back. Looks great for the cameras, not so great for the fans.

Upon receipt of a thousand dollar instrument, I would immediately head for the exit.

Read some history books. It should be "Federal Government Giver".

I've heard them do that before too, it must be a pretty regular thing. I've also heard they let fans come up and play along with them which would be cool. Its not like they have complicated stuff.

zabbers 2009-04-01 03:34:08 PM
he's famous for the Bait and Switch. In San Diego a few years ago he told the crowd "put your hands in the air!" and of course, EVERYBODY did, because, hey, it's Prince! He then immediately said "...if you love Jesus!" and there was that "wtf" moment of confusion and a majority of the people put their hands right back down.

1derful 2009-04-01 03:45:41 PM
He's a dick. He came back to my house a couple days later and asked for his pamphlet back.

stonehenj 2009-04-01 04:57:38 PM
That's odd, because once I met Prince in a men's room in the Minneapolis airport. He gave me something then he refused to let me give it back to him.

The term actually reflects how the white man took everything, they gave, back from the Indians. Don't you love how that was twisted. That said, Prince acted like a white man. For that crime, he should give the cat a guitar; a busted one, filled with termites and a touch of small pox virus wiped on the fret.

But not like he loves his gee-tar.

Dante Culpepper did the same thing with $80,000 worth of jewelry when he was a Viking living in MN.

It's in the purple.

Yeah, actually it was part of the show. I didn't see it, but a friend of mine was describing it to me the day after. His impression was that it was part of the show and he wasn't giving it to the guy for keeps. Notice the feedback and how the guitar continued to wail as he walked away?

redstarr01 2009-04-01 06:27:50 PM
The delay is what makes taking it back a loser move. If handing the guitar to him was just a part of the performance, they should have taken it back as soon as the performance was over. Like as soon as the camera cut away. Before the guy could get excited thinking that he was going to be able to keep it. Taking the expensive instrument right back would have been okay. Giving it a minute or two was lame.

And if they were going to take it back, the guy should have got something special in exchange for being a part of the show, like a meet and greet pass or an autographed album or a free tee-shirt or something.

redstarr01 2009-04-01 06:31:12 PM
If he was going to give it to an audience member for effect, then take it back, he could have pre-arranged it. Prince's people could have picked a fan out earlier during the Leno show and explained to them what was going to happen and given them something cool in return for participating. Then no one would have been disappointed that they didn't get to keep the guitar and no one would get any bad P.R. and Prince would be able to do what he wanted to do on camera and not lose a guitar. Win all around.
