Interestingly enough the current copyright holders enforce it, vigorously. That's right folks, you can be sued for make a roughly 4:33 silent recording.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 06:52:48 PM
These guys could get in serious financial trouble for offering silent sound files advertised as John Cage compositions. I'm totally serious. Like urger said.

A data-compressed version? Why would anyone want that?

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 07:12:51 PM
My favorite thing about this song is the slew of youtube vids such as this one (new window), of full orchestras performing the piece in front of an audience

HagarTheHorrible [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 07:16:07 PM
They don't note which performance it is on the recording. If it's of the '58 London one, don't bother; it lacks feeling and depth. However if it's the recording of the premiere '52 Tudor performance in New York, or the amazing rendition by Gerhardt in Boston in 1971, grab it. You will be stunned by the eloquence of either recording.

Agreed, but caveat emptor: Deutsche Grammaphon's 1998 reissue of the '52 on compact disc is at least two generations removed from the three-track master. Do yourself a favor and find it on vinyl--preferably one printed before '62 when they made the ill-advised switch to electronic cutters.

They made us "listen" to this "piece" in college. I was pissed at the professor for talking about it like it wasn't nonsense.

I'm curious to know how much it compressed down to using MP3 or whatever encoding they used. No, seriously.

Bufu [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 09:50:18 PM
Heh...I always suggest this "tune" whenever there's a thread looking for a happy/snazzy/lively/upbeat/heartfelt etc. whatever song recommendation.

What a colossal fraud.

I don't think Cage would particularly be happy about that.

If you listen really closely you can hear me and my good buddy New Wave Pancho eating smuggled hoagies is the engineering booth.

And you Pink Floyd fans may be interested in the fact that if you play it backwards on really high fidelity equipment; you can literally feel the sammie being unmasticated and reformed into a delicious and fully intact sub.

However, if it takes a man and a half a day and a half to build a house and a half, how long does it take a left-handed monkey with tuberculosis to pick all of the seeds out of a watermelong, and categorize them according to color, size and texture?

D. None of the above, because ice cream has no bones.

ne2d: Do yourself a favor and find it on vinyl--preferably one printed before '62 when they made the ill-advised switch to electronic cutters.

Thank you for the tip. I'll attempt to dig one of those up and give it a listen, though it'll have to wait until I'm done listening to the Halberstadt performance of Cage's other masterpiece, As Slow As Possible.

GreenAdder [TotalFark] 2009-04-01 12:18:23 AM
How are you sure it's not just a cover version by a knockoff band?

so if Cage's "4:33" is free....

does that make Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music one dollar ? or

ONE MILLION DOLLARS ????

This is what we consider a classic case of high-concept trolling. The intellectual elite got trolled hard. Too bad they didn't get as butthurt about it as they did Andy Warhol.

DjangoStonereaver [TotalFark] 2009-04-01 01:31:00 AM
If you can get a copy of this recorded at 48K sample rate and
1.5Mbps, do it!

I can't usually tell the diff on the high bit rate recordings, but
this really lends itself to the depth of reproduction this allows.

It should be noted, that according to Cage the point of 4'33" isn't silence, but rather environmental sounds. You're not supposed to pay attention to the lack of music, but to the sounds around you. At least that's what Cage said.

Pfft, you fool! Only retards listen to silence in processed surround. It's recorded in stereo for a reason!

/would DL it at 224 vbr, but not a bit less.

Gordon Bennett 2009-04-01 06:26:19 AM
It costs £1.99 in the UK itunes store.

I would have downloaded it for free. Cover art and finding out how small the files are is not worth the cost.

SERIOUSLY! When will mastering engineers stand up and demand an end to the Loudness Wars (new window)?!
