So much for that "DESTINATION UUUUUUUUUUUUNKNOWN" thing.

Huh?

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 12:32:52 AM
"Lets Go" is farking awesome. Great bass player in there. And for puppets they're pretty kickass live

tallguywithglasseson [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 12:52:19 AM

Oh.

Rancid's last album, 2003's "Indestructible," reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200. That album marked the band's first and last for Warner Bros., though the release did not carry any mention of the WB name, a move likely designed to assuage fans disappointed by the staunchly independent band's alignment with a major label.
Yeah. I'm sure Tim Armstrong and Brett Gurewitz really gave a shiat about anything WB had to say about the music.

John Nash [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 01:13:40 AM
It was all over once Op Ivy broke up.

"Let's Go" was 15 years ago. Now Rancid does tours sponsored by Hot Topic and Target. And Tim's "totally gangsta" side project the Transplanets has a song in shampoo commercials. "Life Won't Wait" was a step in the right direction artistically. But the "tru punx" didn't like it because it didn't fit with their myopic view of what "punk" should be. So Rancid went back to the well for their next two albums.

awww, that's sad. After "Out comes the wolves" I kind of lost track of them but one thing I'll say, I saw that "wolves" tour in NY at Roseland 12-14 years ago and I never expected in a million years for that band to be that good, I'll never take that away from them

My second favorite group makes another CD?

I'd see that shiat live even. Call me fake or whatever. Don't care. Armstrong is a personal hero since I was 12. And Lar's side project was better than the Transplants.

Can't. farking. Wait.

EL_FABREZ:

And if you have ask me what my number one group is, all I have to say is Greg Graffin.

Sorry, not old enough to experience original punk. PhD punk rocks. My formative years were the 90's.

And it's farked up that The Offspring is pop punk/alt. Dexter is way smarter than any of us.

/out

DemonEater 2009-03-31 05:14:43 AM
So. Is this going to be another one like Out Come the Wolves, or is this going to be one like the shiatfest self-titled one from 2000?

Give me a bunch more like Listed MIA, Avenues and Alleyways, Ruby Soho, Journey to the End, She's Automatic, and I'll be happy.

/Big fan of Lars and the Bastards too

What does Mrs. Homme have to do with Rancid?

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2009-03-31 07:36:43 AM
They probably realized how ridiculous it was to be in their 30s and still trying to do that crusty punk thing. Here's hoping they go back to fun poppier punk again.

EL_FABREZ: And if you have ask me what my number one group is, all I have to say is Greg Graffin.

Have you heard his solo acoustic stuff? Like American Lession and Cold as Clay? There's quite a bit of it available on YouTube.

Somebody told me that punk is the new folk and I laughed at them until I heard the bonus tracks on New Maps of Hell. Friggin awesome.

tailormadebassist 2009-03-31 08:28:54 AM
I love me some Rancid. Saw them live on their last tour and they are quite amazing. And they are awesome down to earth guys too. They still like to hang out after the show and talk to fans.

I stood and talked to Matt, a bass hero of mine, for 30 minutes just chattin' about nothin' in particular. He was very gracious. The only one that I didn't talk to was Brett...he never got off the bus. Oh well, he's no longer in the band anyways. They would've stayed longer if it hadn't been for the rain.

I've liked all their albums except for Life Won't Wait. I don't think they, as a band, have ever "sold out". I think popular tastes in music changed enough for them to become pretty big for Indestructible. Which is a great album.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime 2009-03-31 08:30:16 AM
awww how cute punks continue to sell out, and other punks complain about it. I think the only true punk activity left is complaining that something isn't punk.

/and trolling

Ironically enough, the act of complaining about what is or isn't the genuine article has been co-opted by posers.

/But we'll always have trolling!
//I thought his "crusty punk" thing was sell-outtish, but now I'm too olde to care. Go make some music, and put on some shows.

THIS.

Blowmonkey [TotalFark] 2009-03-31 09:38:49 AM
I really liked their early stuff, (I liked Life Won't Wait and the 2000 self titled too) but the last album kind of sucked and Tim Armstrong's solo thing was ridiculous. Hopefully this is at least good, cause I'll probably spend actual money for it.

Yeah OpIvy was awesome, &c.

extra echo [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-03-31 09:46:12 AM
does this mean they havent run out of clash songs to rip off?

shirtsbyeric 2009-03-31 10:14:34 AM
and the punk cd I recorded 23 years ago comes out right about the same time.

chaoslovescompany 2009-03-31 10:35:31 AM
I just hope they don't do another album like Rancid 2000. That album is painful to listen to. It sounds like Tim smoked a whole pack of Lucky Strikes and decided to do the last half of the album in one take. Indestructible is a good album and I like the riffs on his solo project. The subject he sings about doesn't really get to me (sounds like he's trying to keep the Transplants alive with the lyrical content) but the music is pretty good.

Anyway, here's to hoping they get back to their reggae/ska punk sound.

/and bring back the harmonica!

Big ups to whomever mentioned Lars and the Bastards. Goddamn I loved them. Wish I knew the lyrics when I saw them with DKM in 01 or 02.

If it's anything like that garbage heap Indestructible, I'll pass.

radioberlin 2009-03-31 11:21:06 AM
I'll pick this up since I'll be seeing them with Rise Against a week later.

Clan Xpy 2009-03-31 11:27:10 AM
I am skeptical but optimistic. I'd like them to drop the punk rock flag, and just try to make a good album. Rancid was never a punk band. They were always a punk inspired rock band.

Also, I, for one, liked the 2000 self titled. Yeah most of the time Lars was trying to be some hardcore guy, but instrumentally it all flowed organically.

Axiomatic 2009-03-31 12:19:14 PM
Rancid and Armstrong are great but in truth I have been enjoying Brody's Distillers far more than Rancid lately.

I think maybe I'm a fan of "hardcore punk" more than I am a fan of "ska punk."

Rancid 2000 is 100% awesome if you delete about 4 songs near the end.
Out come the wolves is 70% awesome.
Life Won't wait is 100% awesome.
Indestructible has 5 songs I like and that's unfortunately it.

Great_Milenko 2009-03-31 01:58:09 PM
Rancid? Wow, never figured they would still be around.

Do they still dress like they're stereotypical 80's sitcom "punks" and play nothing but music "inspired" by the Clash?

apeiron242 2009-03-31 02:54:40 PM
Saw them in a bar in Frankfurt in '93. Good times.

This.

Rancid had a handful of OK songs, but the majority of their stuff was meh. They'd have gotten nowhere without dressing up as 'punks'.

Pure pap.
1993-94 Rancid matters only.

Call me crazy, but I don't give half a shiat if they're "big-label puppets" or whatever. If this new stuff is good, I will support it.

/...And Out Come The Wolves = farkin' awesome

MorganFreeman 2009-03-31 04:00:33 PM
Who cares? Skip this b.s. and go buy the new Propagandhi album instead. That band makes Rancid look like a pack of half-trained monkeys. Bands like Rancid and Rise Against aren't spreading any relevant message, they're just pocketing kids' allowance money at this point. I'm not saying the music's bad, but it lacks the sincerity of better punk bands.

EchoDork 2009-03-31 04:37:27 PM
Isn't this the band with that Cadillac song?

brookgo 2009-03-31 04:49:31 PM
Crap, there's some bigtime hate in here for such a great band. Sure, their CDs are all probably 5-7 songs too long (with the exception of And Out Come the Wolves, which is perfect as is). Sure, they're punk elitists, and Lars is quite the asshole, but they put out fantastic music.

tailormadebassist 2009-03-31 06:00:24 PM
Always remember kids, if you do really well and sell alot of albums because you make music alot of people like, you are a sell out.

NOW...to NOT sell out, you have to make music that has NO chance of being mainstream. And you better hope like HELL it never catches on, cuz if it does....you, my friends, are sell outs.

So, to end things, make music a few people like, and when it starts to get big, stop playing the music that you love, and start playing something else. Wash your hands. Turn the page. Wash your hands. Turn the page.

djgrundel 2009-03-31 06:02:51 PM

how is continuing to do what they have done for years and keeping musical experimentation to side projects "selling out"? Don't be pissy cause they make money doing what they want and you just troll fark all day.

Ahhhh...Fark, the place where everyone has a job that is not just pandering to The Man in some way, shape or form...And if they don't they are probably spending too much time at the gym to be able to fit in a job.

Wow, I am shocked to see how many people like Indestructible, I thought it was terrible. Their first album is amazing though.

the sell-out talk with rancid had nothing to do with the music they were playing, and everything to do with the fact that after milking "non-conformity" for every dollar they could for 15 years, they went and signed a multi-million dollar major label record contract, despite having said time after time that they wouldn't.

it was selling out when against me! did it too. but jawbreaker, green day, quicksand? they played whatever music they wanted on whatever label they wanted, and it was fine because they weren't hypocrites about it.

/indestructible sucked, but not because it was on warner.

MorganFreeman 2009-03-31 07:52:46 PM
Compromise: at least they're not the Offspring. I can't tell their music from the Bay City Rollers at this point, and yet Dexter Holland romps around on a private jet he calls "Anarchy Airlines". Makes Rancid look like G.G. Allin by comparison.

So conflicted about this post. The new Propagandhi is indeed amazing, but I also love Rise Against. Hmm...

I'm reading a book "My So-called Punk" where Lars chews out the writer for not dressing the way that he does, when he used to dress like that as a teen. I respect the guys for doing what they do, even into their 40s. BUT there's no reason to be intolerant of people because they don't wear studs on their jackets anymore. That's. Not. Punk.

Why should anyone have to dress a certain way? It's just music.

Clearly you're not familiar with the serious business that is punk rock. If you don't wear a uniform how else will people know how rebellious you are?

18. And he was 30. They started dating when she was 16. So weird!
