The term "oh, snap" is thrown around with reckless abandon these days. But occasionally it's appropriate.

Good bands are out there, you just have to look. There has been a sort of indie resurgence ever since Vampire Weekend got huge.

Oh boy, I can't wait for a "re-imagining" of Jailbreak or The Boys Are Back In Town.

/or even Emerald or Warrior or Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed or Bad Reputation

Really do we all hate The Strokes now?

I can be guilty of music snobbery as much as the next person but, c'mon!! The Strokes have a few great tracks - Last Nite, Reptilia, Someday, Juicebox.

As we all know, there are a LOT of worse bands out there......

Elvis Costello, most certainly. Without a single doubt.

But Thin Lizzy?? Lyrics that make Billy Joel sound like a Poet Laureate? Melodies that Avril Lavigne wouldn't steal?

"Tonight there' gonna be a jail break. Somewhere in this town."

My first thought would be to look somewhere around the jail for this to happen, don't you think Phil?

It might surprise you to learn that Thin Lizzy were non-pretentious working-class rock. Once upon a time, you didn't have to be an emo pussy writing shiatty "poetry" to be a rock star. Not sure what you're talking about with regards to the melodies though. The counter harmonies on their guitars put most bands to shame.

I'm sure some shiat is nastier than other shiat, but I'm not eating ANY of it.

This band is a pile of suck.

When it comes to music there's no accounting for taste. The Strokes rock. There music isn't technically difficult, but the timing is impeccable and thats what they built around.

DrZiffle 2009-03-31 09:33:29 AM
The Strokes' music is disposable pop, not rock and roll.

well shiat. after reading the posts by the first 25 snobs, i feel it is necessary to reveal myself as a strokes fan. do i have to explain myself? nope. they are a great band.

oh, and by the way, to the guy who said that american bands are terrible: huh? sure, ill take muse, and i loved the libertines, but what else is there to offer?

I have no problem with "working class rock"...the Hold Steady, Springsteen, AC/DC...all non pretentious. But the unnecessarily inane lyrics of Thin Lizzy are just too much. Terrible, terrible music. I've never ever understood how they found their way into the annals of "classic rock".

meehaw: But the unnecessarily inane lyrics of Thin Lizzy are just too much. Terrible, terrible music. I've never ever understood how they found their way into the annals of "classic rock".

How exactly do these lyrics fail in comparison to any other rock song?

Guess who just got back today?
Those wild-eyed boys that had been away,
Haven't changed, haven't much to say,
But man, I still think those cats are great.

They were asking if you were around,
How you was, where you could be found.
I told them you were living downtown
Driving all the old men crazy.

The boys are back in town

You know the chick that used to dance a lot,
Every night she'd be on the floor shaking what she's got,
Man when I tell you she was cool, she was red hot,
I mean she was steaming.

That night over at Johnny's place,
Well this chick got up and she slapped Johnny's face
Man we just fell about the place
If that chick dont want to know, forget her.

Friday night theyll be dressed to kill,
Down at Dino's bar and grill.
The drink will flow and blood will spill
If the boys want to fight, you'd better let them.

That jukebox in the corner blasting out my favorite song
The nights are getting warmer, it won't be long
It won't be long till summer comes,
Now that the boys are here again.

The boys are back in town

I've never found them to be "inane," just...accessible, I suppose would be the best way to put it. They also had some great, memorable bass lines. Their "Behind the Music" was the last one I saw, and it was interesting.

Thin Lizzy rules!

If you dont understand how they made it into the annals of rock well guess what? That is in no way a reflection on the band, just on yourself. As if somehow the fact that YOU don't get it actually means something to ANYONE else. Please take your pretentious music snobbing douchebaggery over to a rush thread or something.

of all the useless and inane conversations on fark, i like the useless and inane music conversations the best. there are few objective facts available about music, so the conversation just devolves into 'your favorite band sucks.' someone should put that on a t-shirt.

discospinster: "Hi, I'm God. How's it going?"

I have an early 70's P-Bass similar to Phil's in this picture. Black, but with a crome pick-guard. Made of ash the bass weighs a ton, and it sounds incredible. I remember rehearsing with a band multiple times a week for about a month - from the time I put new strings and tuned it up, until the time i changed them, I never had to retune the bass. And I played the hell out of it. Old Ash Fender P-Bass; it stays in tune forever.

Give #3 another try. It's not as good as #1, but it has some keepers, "Heart in a Cage" and "Electriccityscape" come to mind immediately.

came to say I like the strokes. sure. my girlfriend got me into 'em, but once you get past the greasy hair and skinny jeans, the music is pretty good. cliched chord progressions? them and every other rock/blues band.

/kinda likes coldplay too (yellow is a good karaoke song if you have a good falsetto
