Random old quote time:

2004-07-22 08:02:05 PM dramboxf

I'd probably kill someone if my toaster told me to do it.

dramboxf, I think I'd hold out for a major appliance. Toasters say a lot of stuff they don't mean.

Bless you toaster and all the delicious toast you have produced over this glorious century, which I hope I hope will grow into the toast epoch.

Huzzah! A toast to toast! Your very being provides us with celebration!

I bought my 2-slicer in CVS c15 years ago. It still toasts the English muffins for my little pizzas - the only thing I ever toast at home. I am satisfied.

/Did use the fancy one in the lunchroom at work a few times when a spare bagel was lying around. It did the two sides of the bagel pretty good without any flipping. But we all know a commercial conveyor toaster is the only true machine for a real Hebrew-style bagel.

Toaster thread!

Still have my Grandmothers Sunbeam toaster circa 194x. Still works like the day it came from the factory. Had a new cord put on a few years back, but other than that, completely original, and the chrome - real chrome - still shines like a mirror. Only problem is it probably uses more electricity to toast two slices of bread than running my refrigerator all day. When you push the handle down, the lights sort of dim. Don't use it much, but it's neat to have.

Silicon Sam 2009-03-31 04:34:47 AM
I have several of the manual toasters, and even a '26 Toastmaster.

Damn!

What is the secret? Was the filament made of a meteorite that was one of a kind?

* dons tinfoil hat*

I bet GE has the technology in a vault somewhere and snipers with ninja backup surrounding it!

While the bulb's long life is certainly well outside the range of "normal", I think it has more to do with the fact that it's only a four-Watt bulb, and that power is being dissipated over a filament that's much longer and thicker than the filaments in modern bulbs.

In fact, the filament is so rugged that barring any kind of physical damage, it will probably keep working as long as the bulb itself continues to hold a vacuum. Also, since it's never turned off, it never experiences the large "in-rush" current that you get when you turn on a cold bulb. That's why light bulbs usually burn out when you turn them on, rather than just spontaneously going out after they've been on for a long time.

I use an old Deco toaster from the late 1920s or early '30s. It's the kind with a door on either side of the central element...you have to turn the toast over halfway through, and there's no pop-up mechanism or off switch. You plug it in, it gets hot. It requires attention but produces excellent toast in very short order.

The bulb is not very efficient in terms of lumens per watt, this is the trade off to produce such a long lasting incandescent bulb.

We've overcome the fear and apprehension of the original toaster I assume. Mankind often wondered what dark and mysterious item would pop-up using this new fangled device. Turns out it was simply toasted bread.

All new things are viewed with skepticism at first.

Yeah Toast!

I've have the same $10 toaster since 2001. Still kicking. Been toasting in almost everyday. Holds four slices of bread and it's a good thing since my girlfriends kids will ONLY eat toast with jelly for breakfast!!!
