Maybe they should work on the -cide part before worrying about which gender's head is stuffed in the ice chest.

Feminicide? Was this a Woman's Day sort of thing?

Patterson: Only real Gabriel and Genesis. Discuss.

It was the only real Genesis, but Gabriel still has it, and always has.

Queen just needed Freddy Mercury and his half-a-mic stand. That's true showmanship.

That's got to be some kind of euphemism for anal sex.

Yeah, good luck with the Mexican authorities, Pete. They'll get right on those murders. Just as soon as they finish protecting the asshat who killed Kirsty MacColl eight years ago.

Now STFU with your high-level diplomatic missions, get on the horn with Steve and Tony and Mike and Phil (and Ant) and do a proper Genesis tour so your grouchy old fans can finally see you guys do Supper's farking Ready one last time.

maybe he'll meet some butterflies, gutterflies, flutterby's.

which one is the better side-long epic [all within a year or two of each other]
1. Genesis - Supper's Ready [not counting "horizons"]
2. Van Der Graaf Generator - Plague of the Lighthouse Keepers
3. King Crimson - Lizard
4. Yes - Close to the Edge

discuss.

I'd say Plague of Lighthouse Keepers and Close to the Edge. They're all great, but those two are so unique, you know whay I mean? They have such a dark, literate tension. Supper's Ready and Lizard sound very whimsical and similar, almost as if they could been made by the same band. But once again, just my opinion.

By the way, you're probably the most logical, understanding and non-douchey music fan I've ever seen on Fark.

Though I like all 4 songs, you did forget to mention the 2nd side of Pink Floyd's Meddle released around the same time (1971) - Echoes. That is still one of my favorite full-side songs.

Well thank you very much for the high praise, good sir! :-)

I dunno... i'd say parts of "Supper's Ready" has some dark, literate tension...
but yeah it is kind of whimsical in the distinctly british way...
maybe it's the lyrics, delivery and acoustic guitar trios in it.

same with Lizard, whimsical-wise... but then again Lizard also has some dark music passages in it... [the middle 'battle' passage, that sad Frippertronics-ish-tone guitar at the end]

that being said, i've only seen parts of "plague" on you tube...
it was interesting, but i haven't actually sat down and listened to all of it all at once... [yes yes, i know... bad T_U_E]

close to the edge is mostly major key stuff, with some weird angular guitar bits in it [except for the beginning, that's pretty dark] I've always thought of Yes's stuff as mosly positive theme major key, optimist type stuff. [as opposed to Hammill's dark cynical angst-filled sounding 70's stuff with VDGG]

more later... time to go to work.

very good choice. I like that one too.
very good point. I *knew* i was forgetting one or two...

whoops... i was thinking a little more along the lines of "prog. rock side long epics"
my bad. sorry.

well ok let's go back to my orig. statement/question just "side long epics". Then sure "echoes" it can be added to that short list.
then couldn't "atom heart mother" be added? etc. etc.

but then again, it goes back to the old argument, "is Pink Floyd considered Progressive Rock?".

I'm pretty sure, from what I've read so far, that almost none of PF's members themselves considered themselves "prog" at anytime...

but then again, their "Atom Heart" to "Animals" period could, at times, be considered prog.... different time signatures, use of synths, odd arrangements, etc. etc.
