(Rolling Stone) Cool Green Day: The musical coming soon, presumably because in times of rising unemployment, basing a musical on a band whose name refers to the act of smoking weed all day seems just about right   (rollingstone.com) divider line 28

What? No joke about using the same three chords? I thought this was Fark. Where we recycle jokes even if they aren't funny.

/not a Green Day fan per se.

The real question is, are you a vampire?

I've listened to Green Day for ages and I never knew that the name referred to weed.

Am I alone on this?

Nope. And I even watched their documentary.

I thought this was rather common knowledge.

Will all the actors sing with fake British accents and pretend to be punks?

So... what did you guys think the name "Green Day" stood for? An excessive interest in horticulture?

And speaking of 'banal'...

I hadn't a clue, but I'm not a fan. Band names often don't make any sense.

But then, I didn't know what "420" meant for years and years.

Although we differ on some things, I have to admit. I didn't know this either.

sorry, didnt mean to sound smug, if I did. I like Green Day but its not the greatest of band names.

You want a farked up explanation for a band name? Do you know why "Aphex Twin" calls himself "Aphex Twin" despite the fact that he's one guy?
His twin brother died at birth. I thought that was kind of farking grim as all hell

I have never heard that before so I checked.

The name Aphex Twin is derived from Aphex Systems Limited, a brand of audio signal processing equipment. It is used with permission, as was recognized on the back sleeve of his Richard D. James and drukqs albums. He has explained in interviews that the Twin is in memory of his older brother, also named Richard James, who died at birth.

I knew the first bit, but never heard about the rest. Interesting. Huh.

The best description I've heard of Billie Joe's singing style is an American trying to imitate a British guy imitating an American

I thought the name "Green Day" was some sort of scatalogical reference.

Seriously. Isn't that what the band says?

GibbyTheMole 2009-03-31 07:50:52 AM
It's a reference from the movie "Soylent Green"

There's a sign on a window that reads "Soylent Green Day Is Thursday."

Clan Xpy 2009-03-31 11:33:01 AM
This sucks.

Once again, just to end speculation,

There is a song called "Green Day" on the album 1039 smoothed out slappy hours Album, (for you Jump on the wagon fans, its an album with no radio songs on it)...

If you like green day and never heard 1039 but love american idiot... it will be hard to listen to, its like Loving the white or Let It be album but never hearing Beatles for sale or Help... Its miles from there sound now. It's Poppyer then any of there other efforts.

For the longest time, I thought it referred to this:
farm4.static.flickr.com
But then I heard Billy Joe say it wasn't
