Very clean. The work shows. (or often doesn't but that's that mark of time spent)

Thanks for the nice words, Shaelain. Clean is what I strive for the most (I'm a little psychotic with my cut outs), and that's really nice of you to make mention of it.

I used to spec out and do engineering on those, and yes, it is a circuit-breaker for a high-voltage switchyard. This one looks to be a 10Kv to 15Kv breaker. I have a shirt that reads "ABB, you gotta buy a breaker somewhere, and we need the money"

'O' is for ORIGINAL.

As in the 'O'riginal image, unaltered and ready to be used.

Subby I don't think that's a transformer. I think it's a 3-phase, motor controlled switch.

I don't think that's a transformer. I think it's a 3-phase, motor controlled switch.

... Also known as a circuit breaker. The red/green indicator shows if the unit is open (green) or closed (red). Judging by the bushing length, it looks to be a 69kV unit. The breaker in the background with the larger bushings appears to be a 220kV unit. The breaker bodies themselves (called "tanks") are filled with sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas, probably the best insulating and arc-quenching gas known to man. The breaker has to not only break the circuit under light and normal load conditions (routine switching), it must interrupt fault currents up to 20 times the rated normal load current (typical current ratings are 3000A nominal and 65000A fault current.)

The breaker is known as the "puffer" type - as the breaker opens, assemblies inside the breaker squeeze a small amount of gas, normally at 60-90 PSI inside the tank, past the contact area at high speed, with the result that the arc is extinguished in a couple of cycles.

The breaker is operated using either a massive spring or a hydraulic pressure system. Either method usually stores enough energy for two complete openings and closings (many breakers are configured with a one- or two-shot reclosing sequence, where the breaker is automatically closed a second or two after a fault in case the fault was transient (tree branch, squirrel, etc.) If it trips again, it is locked out until someone can inspect the line.

The aluminum cowlings below the bushings house current transformers, which, along with separate potential transformers, provide inputs to the protective relays which determine when the breaker operates.

Sorry to ramble; I'm an electrical industry geek and get off on this type of stuff (well, not in THAT way...)

DeanOh 2009-04-05 10:52:12 PM
Not that it really matters, but that looks more like a gas circuit breaker than a transformer.
