(St. Petersburg Times) Florida Tenured Florida teachers can do anything they want and get away with it, like cussing out coworkers, propositioning teens behind Dumpster, and stealing $5.95 sandwiches. And that's just the males   (tampabay.com) divider line 71

Whenever a person that deserves to be fired isnt... a Union will be right there protecting him.

10% or so of America belongs to one of these things, the rest of us have to justify our continued employment in the open marketplace.

// not submitter, not enough seniority.

Every single problem in America is caused by unions, especially the creation of a lot whiny losers who need someone to blame for their own failures.

//these teachers seem to think they're cops or something.

At the University of Arizona, a tenured professor tried to make it look like a bureaucratic error caused him to not be assigned any classes for a semester. Oops! Oh no!

They immediately fired him.

He said "You can't fire me, I'm tenured!"

They said "You have lost your tenure. Clean out your office."

He had tried to beat them at their own game and get a semester paid vacation. He got smashed like a bug.

And some teachers are so bad their students grow up to think "cussing her out" is a good choice of words for a professional news story.

Teachers shouldn't be tenured. They should have to relicense to teach every academic year. Professors, who can be the best in their academic and research field, can be tenured just to make a university look good. Under no circumstances should "tenure" be the be all and end all of any discipline / performance issue.

It's not.

The problem is typically a lazy/overworked administration that doesn't want to bother with documenting all of the problems associated with a bad teacher.

Bad teachers suck, but I can assure you they are universally loathed by their colleagues as well. If the teaching profession did not offer tenure and a pension, I wouldn't be in it either because the petty politics, ludicrous bureaucracy and turf wars can make it damned difficult to offer your students the educational opportunities they deserve.

But they are there. By one national expert's estimates, based on surveys of more than 20,000 administrators, 3 to 5 percent of teachers are poor

All of my teachers in school always made a point of telling us how poor they are, looks like this expert disagrees.

If I recall correctly, there was an article posted one time where the author of the article capitalized the word 'dumpster'; hence, subby's reason for doing so.

I think the Fark thread ended up being more about the capitalization of the 'dumpster' than the article itself.

Maybe subby could chime in on this for me.

Ummmm, teachers do not get tenure immediately. They get it after some administrator GIVES it to them. If the administrator is awful or their best friend, we get a load of the same at the school.

Some bad apples spoil the barrel for the whole "tenure is a good thing" argument.

I think this qualifies as teachers unions running amok.

Unions don't give tenure. Unions enforce tenure. If the principal (who is non-union) or anyone higher in rank (including school board members) is afraid of the union, then it is their fault for the mess they made.

You don't understand academic freedom or how important it is. Do you think there will be no performance issues when cronyism and tyrannical administrators rule the day?

As for college, we have the best research universities and system in the world. It doesn't make sense to try to dismantle that because a few people get by and piss you off.

I'm no fan of unions, but it's not like there haven't been terrible abuses from "management" that necessitate their existence.

But it was the unions that likely pressed for it in negotiations. I doubt the school districts would come up with that on their own.

FLMountainMan 2009-03-29 09:28:51 PM
Teachers are lionized more than cops, I swear. At least cops have to go to an academy. Teachers just have to fail to get a real job and fall back on teaching.

davidt 2009-03-29 09:29:22 PM
1. Union power abuse and horrible bosses are the suck. If it wasn't for deplorable work conditions unions would've never existed.

2. A big part of the problem are lazy admins. Two of my friends are teachers. At one school the sucky teacher left during their prep period every day to go shopping. That's an easy write up and nothing happened. At another school the teacher is late every day, and leaves to go to her car between classes for a cig. As an Admin you've got to make life uncomfortable for the lame teachers. Sit in their class, bust their ass, give them a cruddy schedule.

But just like some teachers, Admins just want it to be easy, pass the buck and blame the union when the real problem is partly themselves.

The word Dumpster came from the Dempster-Dumpster system of mechanically loading the contents of standardised containers onto garbage trucks, which was patented by Dempster Brothers in the 1930s. The containers were called Dumpsters, a portmanteau of the company's name with the word dump. However, it took the Dempster Dumpmaster, the first successful front-loading garbage truck (and which used this system), to popularize the word.

Holy shiat. I don't know how I did it, but when I looked at Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude's fristy piss up there (you'll know it when you see it) I swear to FSM I said to myself in my head, not out loud, I don't talk to myself. But I said "That 'T' is backwards! That's so cool!" And come to think of it, I haven't seen a backwards T before.

And then I realized that the last 3 letters look like they could be backwards too, and I thought I was looking at one of those mirror image letterings. And then I noticed it wasn't.

Is the sort of thing that would normally follow "You know how I know you're gay?"
