Yours for £60k, £5k's worth of Harrier shaped scrap.

If I was gonna buy a military aircraft it wouldn't be a harrier. Do you know how many fatal accidents they have trying to vertically take off and land?

What is the point of the Raptor? Considering the F-15 has never been shot down by another fighter, and the only planes possibly capable of doing so are used by friendly nations, I think a lot of taxpayer dollars went to waste.

We'd have been better off buying some Harrier shaped scrap.

r1niceboy: What is the point of the Raptor

Its called swear and tear. Realize that F15s are 20-30 years old and we've flown the hell out of them. They are literally falling apart. There have been many stories in the past few years about them being grounded for all sorts of maintenance problems. The F22 is better in every possible way. Easier maintenance, cheaper in the long term since each plane can do the job of perhaps 10 F15s, and they should last longer than F15 airframes. Hopefully we won't ever need to use them in a huge war, but sticking with our current fleet of airplanes forever just isn't an option. Even if we are only using them to bomb caves. The things just don't last forever.

Besides the obvious, irrelevant F-22 troll, we do have a lot of "Harrier shaped scrap". The Marines fly it around as best they can.

I'd rather have an F-15 too.
If that's not available, perhaps a B-58 Hustler?
Now THAT was a beauty of a plane.......

F-15 vs everything else - 105-0 (actual combat)
F-22 vs F-15 - 5-1 (simulated combat)
You do the math.

and the only planes possibly capable of doing so are used by friendly nations,

You did it now. Bring on the hordes of MiG/Sukhoi fanbois.

How many? I used to work with a Harrier squadron and of the 4-5 that I have seen first hand that have crashed not one of them has had a fatality. Not to mention none of them crashed during their hovers.

There's a B-58 shell (no avionics, no engines) at the Lone Star Flight Museum on Galveston Island.

Used to be a B-58 external fuel pod for sale at a salvage yard in Kingsville TX, but then that was about 30 years ago...

Not a MiG/Sukhoi fan boy, but to be fair, last I checked most of the 105 planes killed by F 15s were like MiG 21s and MiG 25s that would be more of a fair match for a F 4 than a F 15. Also last I checked all the MiG 29s faced by the F 15 were from poor small countries were the pilots probably wouldn't have enough flight hours to get to fly a supersonic trainer if they was flying for the U.S. or Russia.

Call me back when the F 15 has to fight some Russian or Chinese piloted planes and does so well.

American dicks have to be seen to be bigger than everybody else's dicks, right? Just watch "future war", et. al., on discovery. Does the US government pay for that? It's more like The Propaganda Channel.

/But yeah, the chances of the USA ever getting in another dogfight are somewhere between slim and none. Fighter planes are soooo last century.

This is true.
Also, remember that it is not merely fighter v fighter, but rather the entire system. AWACS, satellite, JSTARS, tankers, comm from other F-22's, Navy Hawkeyes, etc, etc...

We have not had 2 modern air forces in full battle since WWII. The main reason for that is...there is only 1 modern air force. 1.5 if you include NATO forces.

Russia sending a flight of bombers to Venezuela is a major accomplishment. For the USAF, going that far is a typical Tuesday.
