Cool.

LavenderWolf 2009-03-29 09:53:03 AM
How is a home NOT already armed with many devices capable of hurting, scaring, or killing a coyote?

I mean, you have a piece of wood? Got a pair of metal cleats? How about, say, a kitchen knife duct taped to a stick? How about.. anything heavy? Something light and flashy? How about some leather gloves and being a man? It's like a medium sized dog!

If you feel you need a stungun or a sword for coyotes you have problems.

I think it's a classic case of "Real-Life Tough Guy". And look on the bright side - if these idiots are carrying stun guns in Flordia, we're guaranteed at LEAST 3 accidental stunnings from this.

Maybe, just maybe, we should stop building into nature and stop encroaching on THEIR territory. Build up. You don't need a McMansion.

Same thing (new window) is happening in my neighborhood.
We've had some pretty vocal protests against efforts to control the deer population. I can't wait to see what those same people do when "nature's creatures" starts running off with their pets.

A quick read of any article containing actual facts about coyotes instead of anti-human propaganda will tell reveal that coyote is the species doing the encroaching, moving into areas of North America in which the coyote did not evolve and has never lived before. Shooting them is fine. They're just big dangerous rats for all practical puposes.

I welcome our new coyote overlords.

+2. We have have a coyote that has moved onto our block. We don't live in the country; we're in Arlington, Va., about 5 miles from the White House. Our neighborhood is a dense suburb of .2 to .4 acre lots, built in the 1950's. I promise you, the coyote is the recent invader on our turf, not the other way around.

They're not wolves. "Small child" is gonna be children under 5, for a coyote. If your toddler is out in the middle of the night then maybe those are some bad genes anyways because you would certainly have failed as a parent.

somedoctorguy: I woke up this morning to howling near my suburban Atlanta home.

One evening I was at a coworker's house in Sugar Hill a few miles from Buford Dam) and we heard the dam's "gonna release water" siren and some howling. The coworker and her husband both got a scared and concerned look on their faces and said "coyotes."

The neighbor two homes away had a husky in the back yard and like the huskies I grew up with, was howling along with the siren.

What a great danger! OOOoooOooOOh!

Right so how are they not a natural species to the area? If they arrived naturally, what's the problem?

Ohhhh, right, animals aren't allowed to move into areas where we live but we're allowed to move into their areas.

/not an environmentalist, go ahead and shoot them.
//just refuting the idea that they're not natural to the area.

Migration. Same way Florida ended up with armadillos. We also have a bird, called the cattle egret in Florida, that is native to Africa. The last article I remember reading about the egret said that biologists think they got blown over here in a storm.

However, armadillos and egrets don't attack and kill both new born fawns or peoples pets so they don't get the same press.

The point remains that in some cases the people and houses were there long before the coyotes. The attacking of pets seems to be a new problem. I used to see a coyote every so often when quail hunting away from any human development, now I've seen them inside the city limits of Lakeland. Florida has always had foxes that often lived right next to humans but they hardly ever posed a risk to pets.

Where I grew up the ranchers would PAY you for coyote and ground hog carcasses. No, shooting them in 1/2 with a .306 does NOT count as two. I tried LOL

Guns are not the problem. It's the id10t behind the trigger. Never had a 'hunting accident', never 'accidentally' had my weapon go off, never shot nothing I was not aiming at, NEVER pick one up in rage. LOL

Coyotes have figured out the next step in their evolution. To quote Sam Kinison : "MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS". Coyotes aren't encroaching on people they are following us and eating our trash. This is pretty much how the wolves did it and became dogs. Man did not domesticate the dog they volunteered.

Just shoot them with a Hastings barrel extension on a shotgun with subsonic loads. It works like a silencer for shotguns. Better yet just buy a katana. I got 2 from The Last Samurai for $19 each and sharpened them up. I bought a surplus Victorinox Swiss Army bayonet for $9. Coyotes tried to pull a guy off of a horse in Griffiths Park in LA back in the 90s so that standing up crap isn't going to do much especially if they're in a pack. We have a shiatload of liberturd dumbasses in SoCal so you're on your own dealing with coyotes and even lions.

My point exactly. What the hell do people expect them to do? It's just like people in Montana who get pissed off about bears in their yards. Of course you will have bears, you stupid farker, you moved into the bear's territory!

There is no pack of thrice damned over grown rats that I couldn't take on with a decent weapon. But with a 20 dollar katana? Hell I'd rather take em on bare handed.
You can't by enough good steel and labor to make a decent sword for twenty bucks. What you have, if you sharpened them yourself, is now a one off cutting edge on a piece of fragile metal coated in chrome. If there ever comes a time in your life when you need one of those swords to be more than a toy, pretend it's made of glass because that's how it's gonna break.

No. Coyotes are vermin so think of them as large hairy, flightless mosquitoes. You don't have to encroach on them. Coyotes are encroaching on us instead of earning an honest living. Think about pigeons, seagulls, roaches and squirrels and how they now pretty much depend on man for survival (in their current populations).

When I've hunt them, it was out in the wild. These are not afraid of people apparently. I would have been lucky to get a bead before the little bastards noticed me and start running away. Then I'd have to blast away and zero his movements..usually over 100 yards. (the fun part)

These that are coming into populated areas are not afraid of people, or most of their noises.

1) Coyotes have been spreading east since the extirpation of the Gray Wolf (and Red Wolf in the southeast, for that matter) which was its main predator and competitor

2) Coyotes WERE imported into Florida, probably several times, by hunting clubs that thought they were buying fox pups and got gipped.

This. Unfortunately, whenever a pack of feral dogs starts becoming a pest to the area, they are (mistakenly) referred to as coyotes. Maybe these are the real McCoy(s), and I didn't RTFA, but I doubt these are examples of Canis latrans.
