Well, the guy had no one to character witness for him in court, and didn't have the "halp, I haz kidz" defense that gets so many people out of jail time. So while this doesn't seem too sensible in terms of the actual case, it's pretty normal overall. Plus, giving the drugs to her made it dealing... and, possibly, he was an actual dealer and the police had been waiting on something like this for a while.
