The term 'Bikie Gang' made me think the picture was going to be of a bunch of kids riding mopeds...

/oh the horror!!!

How do you Australians stand living in a society like that, that's passing laws censoring the internet, banning other types of speech, and now wants to outlaw groups of people coming together to ride bikes simply because "bikie gangs" have caused violence, thus negating freedom of association?

This is going in the wrong direction if you want to reduce gang membership. While prolly inadvertant, calling a motorcycle gang such as the Hells Angels "bikies" does more to demystify them than giving them official outlaw status.

You couldn't pay me to live in Australia even without all that. It always seems like every time I see a show about animal life in Australia, not only is it poisonous, it's like... the most poisonous in the animal kingdom.

Can you own firearms in Australia? Cause if some of those guys come to the front door, you could always bury them... outback.

If any of its members continue to then associate with each other, they will be immediately charged, and face jail terms if convicted.

Wow, guilt by association is going to be formalized into law. Where can I hand in my citizenship? I want to get out of this place.

You kidding me? New Zealand is still shocked that they have a gang. So am I actually.

You can't stop these people from being in a gang... but I think you can remind them that they live in New Zealand and remind them that so long as they do... all the other gangsters of the world are going to make fun of them.

Nope, Guns are very heavily regulated since 1996. There are now incidents where people who use guns in home defense are put in jail.

The Greens and civil liberties groups says the laws could be used to ban other groups in future but the Premier says that is not the intention.

Even if this is true, it doesn't matter what your intention is. What's the next guy in office going to do with the precedent you set?

I can't quite understand the mentality of "let's take a pic of our gang....but everybody cover your faces so noone know who you are"

Kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it ?

Came here to say this...

LegalizeThoughtCrime 2009-03-29 11:41:27 AM
the headline reminds me of what I always say to gun control advocates:
"Hey, wouldn't it be easier just to make it illegal to kill people? Because if it is illegal, then criminals won't do it, right?"

I have never heard a logical response to my snarky retort.

Laws need to take into account that people will break them, and ensure that the breaking of the law does not cause greater danger to those who obey it than they would be in if the law weren't in place.

So, according to your logic, no law works, ever, because there are people who continue to break them. Thus, the next logical step is to... have no laws?

Who are these people you've been using that line on? Creationists?

The idea is to remove the reason for the law and thus you have no law to break because it becomes impossible to break the law. It's complicated. Watch Zeitgiest and Zeitgiest 2.

If there are no guns, there is no gun control.

The gun is good. The gun shoots death and purifies the earth of the filth of brutals.

The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds and makes new life to poison the earth with a plague of men.

By that logic, every guy should have their dick cut off. If there are no penises, there is no rape.

Mokmo 2009-03-29 12:28:52 PM
Canada already has this in the books, but instead of banning them altogether, it makes it easier for prosecutors to seize pretty much anthing that might be bought from the profits of their criminal activities. (Don't expect some Harleys to go out for auction, these are destroyed once the appeal process is over)

Street gangs or biker gangs, once they get that designation, pretty much get more time in jail and a call from the revenue service on their significant other's businesses.
