Vegan death metal, with Goat Boy on vocals. Interesting concept.

I can't say that I listen to any Cattle Decapitation, but I understand their appeal. You can find music with just about any lyrical theme if you want. My buddy listens to a band called Frameshift, and their entire lyrical theme is about Evolution. They also have several songs about Richard Dawkins.

Anyway, here are some recommendations for this week:

Martriden - The Enigma of Fate (new window - Harsh Vocals) - These guys came pretty much out of nowhere (Montana) and released their first full length last year. They play Death Metal with Black Metal influences and I must say I was impressed with what they have put out so far. Pretty kick ass considering they don't live in a hotbed of Death/Black Metal.

Moonsorrow - Karhunkynsi (new window - Harsh and Clean Vocals) - Moonsorrow plays a Viking/Black type of Metal and fuses it with Folk instruments. I have a hard time categorizing them because their music is so diverse. I prefer to think of them as a sort of Progressive Metal. They have been consistently putting out awesome Metal and they are awesome live. Bonus: Henri Sorvali, the keyboardist for Finntroll, is a founding member of Moonsorrow

Black Label Society - Crazy or High (new window - Clean Vocals) - As most of you know, this is Zakk Wylde's band and they are known for their gritty Sludge Metal. One album that is totally different from the rest of their stuff is "Hangover Music Volume VI". It is mainly an acoustic album (electric stuff on solos) and it lives up to its name. Even if you're not a fan of Black Label Society, don't pass this one up!

Wulfgar - Cleansed By Fire (new window - Harsh Vocals) - Fans of Amon Amarth will probably like this band. They are also from Sweden and the influence of AA is definitely apparent, though I think Wulgar is still unique. They have some pretty kick ass riffs and I think the vocalist is quite talented.

Never really got into Cattle Decapitation. The beginning of that track drew me in and then they seem to ruin it with their brand of metal.

Intronaut is awesome. Just picked up Void last week - need to get my hands on their new one. Seeing them w/ Mastodon in 6 weeks, looking forward to that.

Giant Squid - Neonate (new window)
The Ocean - Neoarchaean: To Burn the Duck of Doubt (new window)
Gojira - Ouroburos (new window)

Here are a few that I hope are new to someone:

Arsis - We Are The Nightmare (new window) Melodic death metal

The Ocean - The City In The Sea (new window) Atmospheric hardcore

Before The Dawn - Deadsong (new window) Gothic metal

Angel Blake - Defenseless (new window) Gothic metal led by a guitarist from The Crown

Ihsahn - Unhealer (new window) Former Emporer songwriter/guitarist/vocalist with Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) as a guest on this song

Textures - Awake (new window) This band has elements of progressive and atmospheric metal blended with clean/hardcore vocals

I LOVE Moonsorrow. I can not wait to be seeing them on Paganfest in May.
Tonight is Pagan Knights so I shall recommend the 3 bands I will be seeing tonight

Tyr - Hail to the Hammer (new window) (Prog folk metal)

Suidakra - Darkane Times (new window) (melodic death metal)

Alestorm - Wenches and Mead (new window) (Pirate metal)

i've seen cattle decap so many times over the years that i've lost count. and surprisingly, they've gotten better each and every time. their albums too. the harvest floor and karma.bloody.karma are fantastic albums, especially from a band that most wrote off as a farking gimmick band on their early albums.

Cool stuff. Definitely unexpected coming from Montana, if a little derivative.

Here are my suggestions for cool experimental/prog stuff free for download:

Ikuinen Kaamos - Closure EP: Opeth-like melodic death metal.

Mytra - Sagittarius and Ecotone: heavy progressive metal from Hungary.

Duobetic Homunkulus - Části a mechanismy strojů: Czech tech/progressive metal featuring former members of T.O.O.H.

Yeah - I'm not a huge Mastodon fan, but I've passed up a few opportunities to see them already. I'm honestly looking forward to Intronaut more. I'm not really expecting this show to live up to the Gojira/Opeth shows that it's sandwiched between, either.

Cattle Decap are great. The Harvest Floor is really good, probably their best album so far.

Lately I've been listening to the new Mastodon and the new Napalm Death, which is excellent. I'm eagerly awaiting the new Agoraphobic Nosebleed, which comes out next month. They put up two new songs on Myspace which totally rocked my face off. And they have a female vocalist now.

About as eco-friendly as Cattle Decap. Their lyrics deal primarily with pollution and enviormental destruction. What do you think Swallowed in Black means?

this is where i complain that "homovore" was a much better album. cattle decap is ok, not my favorite, but i'm psyched to see grind on the SHMHC. also getting a HUGE kick about all the people crying about it being too heavy and not melodic enough. um... yeah, grind, that's the point. it's br00tal.
that having been said, cattle decapitation was the first grindcore band to start inroads to the hipster and hot-topic metal scenes, and for that i will never forgive them. they also made it not cool to have BBQ ribs around large groups of metalheads cuz there will always be that one vegan guy who won't let it go.
since i'm feeling grindy anyways...
Repulsion - Radiation Sickness. For the haters, this is widely recognized as the first grindcore album. it was recorded in 1986-87. goddamn whippersnappers.
Brutal Truth - Ill Neglect
Napalm Death - The Silence Is Deafening
Vader - Fear of Napalm (Terrorizer cover)
and the original Fear Of Napalm, released 1989.

mmmmm grind.

What's the closest that Paganfest will get to you?

Luckily for me, the venue that carries all the awesome Metal acts is only about 20 minutes from where I live so I can make it pretty easily. I will probably go by myself though, considering not many of my friends like Folk Metal, at least not enough to go to a show.

CC has always been a giant "meh" for me. hate barnes and his grandstanding, loathe their lyrical content, never really got into their death metal style (it gets boring LOL the irony kills me). yeah, i look that shiat up. glorifying rape = not so cool.
but... they spawned CANNABIS CORPSE, who I actually like more than Cannibal Corpse. listen. it's hilarious and really good. songs like "mummified in bong water," "farked with northern lights," "blunted at birth" etc...
and also Some Aussie doing a lounge version of "Rancid Amputation"
and Acoustic Corpse is also hilarious. www.myspace.com/acousticcorpse666

Seattle. For me it's a 30 min bus ride > 1 hour ferry ride > 20 min walk which isn't bad but coming back is a biatch since the ferry doesn't start again until 5am and the bus doesn't run until 6am.

Plus I'd have to take the next day off because I work at 7am. There's so many sweet shows I've missed because of this hassle. I'd go if I had a friend interested in going. Otherwise it isn't really worth it for me.

Grindcore you mean? Nah I was just farking with you anyway. We don't need to have that pointless arguement again. Listen to what you want man even shiatty Grindcore is better than 80% of the music most people enjoy.

Some of those non-grindy bands you listed a week(?) ago weren't bad though, not my cup of tea, but not bad.

Great song and it answers a question I've had for a long time. Which one is Moonspell and which one is Moonsorrow? (Just never bothered to look it up). I saw Moonspell open for Opeth and I enjoyed them as well.
