First, I'd never heard of this either. Second, I might have also asked who painted it, but after someone said, "God", I would have laughed and said, "No, seriously, who painted it?"

Probably why I'll never hold public office.

How is that img1.fark.net? Do you expect Hillary Clinton to know every aspect of all religions around the world?

Wow, you have never heard of the Patron Saint of the Americas. Even my Islamic friend at the office who was born in Palestine knows about our Lady of Guadalupe.

You must lead a very sheltered life. It is the country next door, the biggest church in the nation's capital and they have moving walkways like in the airport because so many people come to see the image and you have never heard of it.

Simply amazing.

She is Secretary of State, he official itinerary takes her to see the image. She need not know the postal code of the 12th Imam, but she should have had a 10 minute briefing by her staff about the significance of what she was going to see.

Just like the 'overload' button the Clinton State Department is again woefully unprepared and leaving her looking like a simpleton.

What's the biggest church in our nation's capital? Who built the pipe organ there?

/I trust you, and not just Google, will know the answer.

Roman Catholic, the Basilica of Our Lady . Pipe organ, I have no idea who built it but it was paid for by the Knights of Columbus.

And I am not even secretary of state.

I know this because it was in a recent magazine article I read.

Well oddly that unexpected stop was on her official calendar. Try the state department website, it is all public record.

I don't think Christ compels people to do stuff. God gave us free will.

However you would think somebody at State would at least have bought a Fodors or Lets Go Guide and looked the place up.

Either Hillary surrounds herself with less than competent aides, or she is too arrogant to listen to her aides (if they are in fact competent).

I literally laughed out loud at "You have a marvelous Virgin!"

She's the Secretary of State. Perhaps she should do a bit of research when visiting things she knows nothing of, to avoid offending the people she's visiting.

That was a Bush-type gaffe.

What's so strange about not having heard of some painting in a church in another country? I don't think I've ever heard of it, either. It's also possible I *have* heard of it, but just didn't find it interesting enough to remember...

/not sure what's so amazing about that

Apparently you're supposed to know all about the iconography of religious groups housed anywhere on your continent. Never mind the fact that this one religion just happens to have tens of thousands of holy shrines spread all over the face of the planet.

I wasn't raised Catholic either, but I have quite a few relatives that are, including one uber-Catholic aunt who still has holy water fonts in every room of her home, crucifixes in every room, enough holy medals, scapular & cards to fill a small room. She still doesn't eat meat on Friday, switched from the church she had been attending for most of her life to one that has Latin masses, etc.

Because of her I learned about the Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, St. Therese of Lisieux (The Little Flower), etc., plus the regular visits to The Grotto in Portland, Oregon.

I love it when Catholics are amazed that other people don't give a crap about their religion, graven images or hero worship.

Too lazy to google.

GoodyearPimp 2009-03-29 10:10:29 AM
Also raised Catholic. Probably have heard of this thing by name previously, but don't recall anything about it being "wished" into existence. Of course, if you told me about it today (as a 'fellow believer'), I'd look at you funny and start actively ignoring you, having easily determined that you are an idiot.

My theory that 'other countries are more devout' holds up. They'll believe any bullshiat someone tells them.

Lt_Aurum 2009-03-29 10:12:50 AM
Christians need to pull their head out of their ass and stop getting offended when people don't pay attention to their religious superstitions. I think it's laughable a story about a painting made by "god" deserves more attention than grilled cheese jesus.

Did we immediately invade the country in search of WMD? No?

That passes as a successful visit these days

Squawker 2009-03-29 10:17:56 AM
Probably got briefed before the visit by the same guy who came up with the "Overcharge" button. Since Liberals are all heathens and don't believe in God, I wouldn't expect her to know anything about it.

Bladel [TotalFark] 2009-03-29 10:18:26 AM
So the "fail" is for not knowing, or not believing it wasn't painted by humans?

In either case, I'm with the SOS on this one.

Shatner's Bassoon [TotalFark] 2009-03-29 10:23:45 AM
I realized that the press wasn't going to be covering it.

Which, assuming this story is true, says a lot about the media. Here's how Catholic News Agency reported the most recent diplomatic gaffe:

During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers "on behalf of the American people," after asking who painted the famous image.

You can read more about Guadalupe here, but Roman Catholics believe that the beautiful image was miraculously imprinted on the cloak of a 16th-century peasant.

Now, I'm no fan of Hilary Clinton, but have to give the press kudos for not covering this entirely unremarkable story. They must've been reporting some real news for a change.

I'd expect her to be aware of the major points of any country and/or place which is on her itinerary. I'm sure she was given a state department briefing prior to her visit. that she was be so ignorant is disturbing, to say the least.

I wish I could just walk into a church unannounced and tell them to take their relics off the wall so I can inspect them closely. Man, the SOS gets all the perks.

This particular sentence structure does not help your point, Weav.

binnster 2009-03-29 10:29:32 AM
Here's what I'm wondering: Why was this story not deemed newsworthy?

She didn't know that a painting she'd never heard of before was supposed to have been painted by God himself. The real question here is: why the fark do you think that is newsworthy?

chipspastic 2009-03-29 10:29:48 AM
Yes I've heard of Our Lady of Guadalupe, but I had never heard of this particular miracle until today.

But, whoever is in charge of briefing SoS Clinton on local culture needs to be fired.

flannelled fool 2009-03-29 10:29:50 AM

FTFA:
The article noted that CNA printed this:

This evening Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to receive the highest award given by Planned Parenthood Federation of America - the Margaret Sanger Award, named for the organization's founder, a noted eugenicist. The award will be presented at a gala event in Houston, Texas.

I can't believe Hillary would think for one minute that accepting an award in that woman's name would be a good thing for her politically.
