Funny how we send in a farkload of troops, then initiate peace talks.

A western official who attended the talks said: "For the first time in two years since I was promised an ambassadorship for bundling two hundred grand in campaign contributions I'm optimistic about Afghanistan"

Adjusted to reflect eternal realities, in light of TFA not providing anybody with real juice who's willing to go on the record.

And the War On Some Drugs continues. Long as we're spending money on foreign aid we do more good simply buying up the opium and putting it to legitimate use as a painkiller for those parts of the world that could use it in their health-care operations.

They don't call it the Graveyard of Empires for nothing. There is nothing to win in Afghanistan. Nothing. There's nothing there except people who have lived their way of life for a thousand farking years, and they don't give a shiat about anyone negotiating peace with anyone else. The only thing that matters is either the old guy in the corner proclaiming what the new rules are, or the young guy in the compound down the road with all the heavy firepower.

17,000 or 170,000, there's no winning in Afghanistan.

/loves me some Obama, but Afghanistan is pointless.

That would be sensible, but the existing opium suppliers won't let their prices be undercut by Afghan competition. Protectionism FTL.

Look, as nice as a fair game is, when you're worried about starting world war 3 over a pile of rocks, you stack the deck like a mutherfarker. Dealing from a position of demonstrated ability to blow most of the country up is not necessarily a bad idea.

Because they are are at odds with other counties in the region. Israel for one. Iraq was their enemy, not any more, unless they provoke.

I should have said not JUST because of US.

These folks are not to be taken lightly. It is too bad, b/c the Iranian people are good people. Their leadership is the problem.

I guess you have a point, although Isreal is the only other nuclear player in the region.

Still, a superpower invading a neighbor without provocation isn't likely to make one feel secure, is it? Especially a superpower who has had no diplomatic relations with you for 30 years.

Don't get me wrong, I don't support Iran getting the bomb. I'm just saying if I were in that position, I would be doing the development and lying through my teeth about it to the rest of the world.

Phil Herup: Because they are are at odds with other counties in the region. Israel for one.

Their odds with Israel are largely rhetorical; they're pretty much the only nation in the region that's never actually gone to war with Israel.

It's a means of pandering to the religious fundies; they have no intention of actually risking their own wellbeing to fight Israel.

Well, just like Saddam did with his "WMDs" they like to flex their pseudo-muscle. Why do you think Saddam was no hesitant to delay inspection by Hans Blix? He did not want to appear weak to his neighbor.

He actually liked the idea that the whole world thought he was dangerous. He was a sociopath. So is the Iranian leadership.

Everyone knows you are supposed to develop WMDs is a secret underground lair until they are ready.

Other than Oman, which country on that map with a US flag is actually a stable US ally?

Answer none. Iran has two major pain points in the 1990s, the taliban and saddam. Now that he's gone I'm surprised that Iran hasn't sent a big thank you card to Bush.

What was the name of the iranian plant who fed all the BS to Bush to push for the iraqi invasion? Snowball? Something...

Who cares about Saddam and his non-existent WMD's? They are irrelevant now, except as an object lesson that the US could possibly invade an unfriendly nation on the basis of bad intelligence.
